St. Mary Magdalene

Collect (LSB)

Almighty God, Your Son Jesus Christ restored Mary Magdalene to health and called her to be the first witness of His resurrection. Heal us from all our infirmities, and call us to know You in the power of Your Son’s unending life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament (LSB): Prov. 31:10-31

The Woman Who Fears the LORD

 10[a](A) An excellent wife who can find?
   She is far more precious than(B) jewels. 11The heart of her husband trusts in her,
   and he will have no lack of gain. 12She does him good, and not harm,
   all the days of her life. 13She(C) seeks wool and flax,
   and works with willing hands. 14She is like the ships of the merchant;
   she brings her food from afar. 15She(D) rises while it is yet night
   and(E) provides food for her household
   and portions for her maidens. 16She considers a field and buys it;
   with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. 17She(F) dresses herself[b] with strength
   and makes her arms strong. 18She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
   Her lamp does not go out at night. 19She puts her hands to the distaff,
   and her hands hold the spindle. 20She(G) opens her hand to(H) the poor
   and reaches out her hands to the needy. 21She is not afraid of snow for her household,
   for all her household are clothed in(I) scarlet.[c] 22She makes(J) bed coverings for herself;
   her clothing is(K) fine linen and(L) purple. 23Her husband is known in(M) the gates
   when he sits among the elders of the land. 24She makes(N) linen garments and sells them;
   she delivers sashes to the merchant. 25(O) Strength and dignity are her clothing,
   and she laughs at the time to come. 26She opens her mouth with wisdom,
   and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27She looks well to the ways of her household
   and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28Her children rise up and call her blessed;
   her husband also, and he praises her: 29"Many(P) women have done(Q) excellently,
   but you surpass them all." 30(R) Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
   but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31Give her of the fruit of her hands,
   and let her works praise her in the gates.

Gospel: Luke 7:36-50

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

 36(A) One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. 37(B) And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and(C) wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If(D) this man were(E) a prophet, he(F) would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner." 40And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he answered, "Say it, Teacher."

 41"A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred(G) denarii, and the other fifty. 42(H) When they could not pay, he(I) cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?" 43Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." 44Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house;(J) you gave me no water for my feet, but(K) she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45(L) You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to(M) kiss my feet. 46(N) You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47Therefore I tell you, her sins,(O) which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little." 48And he said to her, (P) "Your sins are forgiven." 49Then those who were at table with him began to say among[a] themselves,(Q) "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" 50And he said to the woman, (R) "Your faith has saved you;(S) go in peace."
