Saturday of Exaudi (Sunday after the Ascension)

First Reading: Num. 20:22-21:9

 22Now when they set out from (A)Kadesh, the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.

Death of Aaron
 23Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron at (B)Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying,

 24"Aaron will be (C)gathered to his people; for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because (D)you rebelled against My command at the waters of Meribah.

 25"Take Aaron and his son (E)Eleazar and bring them up to Mount Hor;

 26and strip Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar. So Aaron will be (F)gathered to his people, and will die there."

 27So Moses did just as the LORD had commanded, and they went up to Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

 28After Moses had stripped Aaron of his garments and (G)put them on his son Eleazar, (H)Aaron died there on the mountain top. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

 29When all the congregation saw that Aaron had died, all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty (I)days.

Arad Conquered
 1When the Canaanite, the king of (J)Arad, who lived in the [a]Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of [b]Atharim, then he fought against Israel and took some of them captive.

 2So (K)Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, "If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities."

 3The LORD heard the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites; then they utterly destroyed them and their cities. Thus the name of the place was called [c](L)Hormah.

 4Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to (M)go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey.

 5The people spoke against God and Moses, "(N)Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and (O)we loathe this miserable food."

The Bronze Serpent
 6(P)The LORD sent fiery serpents among the people and (Q)they bit the people, so that (R)many people of Israel died.

 7(S)So the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and you; (T)intercede with the LORD, that He may remove the serpents from us." And Moses interceded for the people.

 8Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a (U)fiery serpent, and set it on a standard; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live."

 9And Moses made a (V)bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

Second Reading: Lk. 20:45-21:19

 45(A)And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples,

 46"Beware of the scribes, (B)who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,

 47who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."

The Widow's Gift
 1(C)And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.

 2And He saw a poor widow putting in (D)two small copper coins.

 3And He said, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them;

 4for they all out of their surplus put into the offering; but she out of her poverty put in all that she had (E)to live on."

 5(F)And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, He said,

 6"As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which (G)there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down."

 7They questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?"

 8And He said, "See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, '(H)I am He,' and, 'The time is near ' (I)Do not go after them.

 9"When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately."

Things to Come
 10Then He continued by saying to them, "Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom,

 11and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

 12"But before all these things, (J)they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for My name's sake.

 13"(K)It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony.

 14"(L)So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves;

 15for (M)I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.

 16"But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death,

 17and you will be hated by all because of My name.

 18"Yet (N)not a hair of your head will perish.

 19"(O)By your endurance you will gain your lives.
