Friday of Exaudi (Sunday after the Ascension)

First Reading: Num. 20:1-21

Death of Miriam
 1Then the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to the (A)wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people stayed at Kadesh. Now Miriam died there and was buried there.

 2(B)There was no water for the congregation, (C)and they assembled themselves against Moses and Aaron.

 3(D)The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, "(E)If only we had perished (F)when our brothers perished before the LORD!

 4"(G)Why then have you brought the LORD'S assembly into this wilderness, for us and our beasts to die here?

 5"Why have you made us come up from Egypt, to bring us in to this wretched place? (H)It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink."

 6Then Moses and Aaron came in from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting and (I)fell on their faces. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to them;

 7and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

The Water of Meribah
 8"Take (J)the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink."

 9So Moses took the rod (K)from before the LORD, just as He had commanded him;

 10and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. And he said to them, "(L)Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?"

 11Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and (M)water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank.

 12But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "(N)Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."

 13Those were the waters of [a](O)Meribah, because the sons of Israel contended with the LORD, and He proved Himself holy among them.

 14From Kadesh Moses then sent messengers to (P)the king of Edom: "Thus your brother Israel has said, 'You (Q)know all the hardship that has befallen us;

 15that our fathers went down to Egypt, and we stayed in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians treated us and our fathers badly.

 16'But (R)when we cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice and sent (S)an angel and brought us out from Egypt; now behold, we are at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.

 17'Please (T)let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or through vineyard; we will not even drink water from a well. We will go along the king's highway, not turning to the right or left, until we pass through your territory.'"

 18(U)Edom, however, said to him, "You shall not pass through us, or I will come out with the sword against you."

 19Again, the sons of Israel said to him, "We will go up by the highway, and if I and (V)my livestock do drink any of your water, (W)then I will pay its price. Let me only pass through on my feet, nothing else."

 20But he said, "(X)You shall not pass through." And Edom came out against him with a heavy force and with a strong hand.

 21(Y)Thus Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his territory; (Z)so Israel turned away from him.

Second Reading: Lk. 20:19-44

Tribute to Caesar

 19The scribes and the chief priests (A)tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.

 20(B)So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order (C)that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of (D)the governor.

 21They questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth.

 22"Is it lawful for us (E)to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"

 23But He detected their trickery and said to them,

 24"Show Me a [a]denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's."

 25And He said to them, "Then (F)render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

 26And they were unable to (G)catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.

Is There a Resurrection?

 27(H)Now there came to Him some of the (I)Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection),

 28and they questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (J)IF A MAN'S BROTHER DIES, having a wife, AND HE IS CHILDLESS, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER.

 29"Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless;

 30and the second

 31and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.

 32"Finally the woman died also.

 33"In the resurrection therefore, which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her."

 34Jesus said to them, "The sons of (K)this age marry and are given in marriage,

 35but those who are considered worthy to attain to (L)that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;

 36for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are (M)sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

 37"But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in (N)the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord (O)THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.

 38"(P)Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for (Q)all live to Him."

 39Some of the scribes answered and said, "Teacher, You have spoken well."

 40For (R)they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.

 41(S)Then He said to them, "How is it that they say [b]the Christ is (T)David's son?

 42"For David himself says in the book of Psalms,
         '(U)THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
         "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
    43(V)UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'

 44"Therefore David calls Him 'Lord,' and how is He his son?"
