Exaudi (Sunday after the Ascension)

Explanation of the Week

The Spirit of truth testifies of Jesus, who is the Truth. But the world does not receive the Truth. It loves its own and hates those who are of the Truth. Just as Jesus was scorned, so is His church. "The time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service." (Jn 15:26Ñ16:4) Yet it is by Jesus' suffering and death that we are saved. Therefore we rejoice to share in His sufferings, that we may also share in His resurrection glory. (1 Pet 4:7-14) Through the ministry of the Spirit of truth, we are cleansed from the deceit of our idols and given a new heart and a new spirit, the heart and Spirit of Christ. (Ezek 36:22-28) He is now at work in us to have fervent, self-giving love for one another, love which covers a multitude of sins, "that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen."

Offertory

God has gone up with a shout, The LORD with the sound of a trumpet. (Psalm 47)

Matins Psalm(s): Ps. 93

The Majesty of the LORD.

    1(A)The LORD reigns, He is (B)clothed with majesty;
         The LORD has (C)clothed and girded Himself with strength;
         Indeed, the (D)world is firmly established, it will not be moved.
    2Your (E)throne is established from of old;
         You (F)are from everlasting.
    3The (G)floods have lifted up, O LORD,
         The floods have lifted up their voice,
         The floods lift up their pounding waves.
    4More than the sounds of many waters,
         Than the mighty breakers of the sea,
         The LORD (H)on high is mighty.
    5Your (I)testimonies are fully confirmed;
         (J)Holiness befits Your house,
         O LORD, forevermore.

First Reading: Num. 14:1-25

The People Rebel
 1Then all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.

 2All the sons of Israel (A)grumbled against Moses and Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, "(B)Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!

 3"Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, (C)to fall by the sword? (D)Our wives and our little ones will become plunder; would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"

 4So they said to one another, "(E)Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt."

 5(F)Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in the presence of all the assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israel.

 6Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes;

 7and they spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, "(G)The land which we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land.

 8"(H)If the LORD is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us--(I)a land which flows with milk and honey.

 9"Only (J)do not rebel against the LORD; and do not (K)fear the people of the land, for they will be our prey. Their protection has been removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them."

 10(L)But all the congregation said to stone them with stones Then (M)the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting to all the sons of Israel.

Moses Pleads for the People
 11(N)The LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people spurn Me? And how long will (O)they not believe in Me, despite all the signs which I have performed in their midst?

 12"I will smite them with (P)pestilence and dispossess them, and I (Q)will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they."

 13(R)But Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your strength You brought up this people from their midst,

 14and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, O LORD, are in the midst of this people, for (S)You, O LORD, are seen eye to eye, while Your cloud stands over them; and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

 15"Now if You slay this people as one man, (T)then the nations who have heard of Your fame will say,

 16'Because the LORD (U)could not bring this people into the land which He promised them by oath, therefore He slaughtered them in the wilderness.'

 17"But now, I pray, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared,

 18'(V)The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but (W)He will by no means clear the guilty, (X)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.'

 19"(Y)Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness, just as You also have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."

The LORD Pardons and Rebukes
 20So the LORD said, "(Z)I have pardoned them according to your word;

 21but indeed, (AA)as I live, (AB)all the earth will be filled with the glory of the LORD.

 22"Surely (AC)all the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet (AD)have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice,

 23(AE)shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who spurned Me see it.

 24"But My servant Caleb, (AF)because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, (AG)I will bring into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it.

 25"(AH)Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; turn tomorrow and set out to the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea."

Vespers Psalm(s): Ps. 97

The LORD'S Power and Dominion.

    1(A)The LORD reigns, let the (B)earth rejoice;
         Let the many [a](C)islands be glad.
    2(D)Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
         (E)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
    3(F)Fire goes before Him
         And (G)burns up His adversaries round about.
    4His (H)lightnings lit up the world;
         The earth saw and (I)trembled.
    5The mountains (J)melted like wax at the presence of the LORD,
         At the presence of the (K)Lord of the whole earth.
    6The (L)heavens declare His righteousness,
         And (M)all the peoples have seen His glory.
    7Let all those be ashamed who serve (N)graven images,
         Who boast themselves of (O)idols;
         (P)Worship Him, all you gods.
    8Zion heard this and (Q)was glad,
         And the daughters of Judah have rejoiced
         Because of Your judgments, O LORD.
    9For You are the LORD (R)Most High over all the earth;
         You are exalted far (S)above all gods.
    10(T)Hate evil, you who love the LORD,
         Who (U)preserves the souls of His godly ones;
         He (V)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
    11(W)Light is sown like seed for the righteous
         And (X)gladness for the upright in heart.
    12Be (Y)glad in the LORD, you righteous ones,
         And (Z)give thanks to His holy name.

Second Reading: Lk. 18:18-34

The Rich Young Ruler

 18(A)A ruler questioned Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

 19And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.

 20"You know the commandments, '(B)DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"

 21And he said, "All these things I have kept from my youth."

 22When Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack; (C)sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have (D)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

 23But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.

 24And Jesus looked at him and said, "(E)How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!

 25"For (F)it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

 26They who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?"

 27But He said, "(G)The things that are impossible with people are possible with God."

 28Peter said, "Behold, (H)we have left our own homes and followed You."

 29And He said to them, "Truly I say to you, (I)there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,

 30who will not receive many times as much at this time and in (J)the age to come, eternal life."

 31(K)Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, (L)we are going up to Jerusalem, and (M)all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.

 32"(N)For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon,

 33and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again."

 34But (O)the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.
