Ascension

Collect (LSB)

Almighty God, as Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, ascended into the heavens, so may we also ascend in heart and mind and continually dwell there with Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament (LSB): 2 Kings 2:5-15

 5(A)The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, "(B)Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?" And he answered, "Yes, I know; be still."

 6Then Elijah said to him, "Please (C)stay here, for the LORD has sent me to (D)the Jordan." And he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on.

 7Now (E)fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood opposite them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.

 8Elijah (F)took his mantle and folded it together and (G)struck the waters, and they were divided here and there, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

 9When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please, let a (H)double portion of your spirit be upon me."

 10He said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you (I)see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."

 11As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared (J)a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven.

 12Elisha saw it and cried out, "(K)My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw Elijah no more Then (L)he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

 13He also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan.

 14He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" And when he also had (M)struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over.

Elisha Succeeds Elijah
 15Now when (N)the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho opposite him saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." And they came to meet him and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

    15For thus says the (A)high and exalted One
         Who (B)lives forever, whose name is Holy,
         "I (C)dwell on a high and holy place,
         And also with the (D)contrite and lowly of spirit
         In order to (E)revive the spirit of the lowly

Epistle: Acts 1:1-11

Introduction

 1The first account I composed, (A)Theophilus, about all that Jesus (B)began to do and teach,

 2until the day when He (C)was taken up to heaven, after He (D)had by the Holy Spirit given orders to (E)the apostles whom He had (F)chosen.

 3To these (G)He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of (H)the things concerning the kingdom of God.

 4Gathering them together, He commanded them (I)not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for (J)what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me;

 5for (K)John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit (L)not many days from now."

 6So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, (M)is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?"

 7He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which (N)the Father has fixed by His own authority;

 8but you will receive power (O)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be (P)My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and (Q)Samaria, and even to (R)the remotest part of the earth."

The Ascension

 9And after He had said these things, (S)He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

 10And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, (T)two men in white clothing stood beside them.

 11They also said, "(U)Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who (V)has been taken up from you into heaven, will (W)come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven."

Gospel: Mark 16:14-20

The Disciples Commissioned

 14Afterward (A)He appeared (B)to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their (C)unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen.

 15And He said to them, "(D)Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

 16"(E)He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

 17"These signs will accompany those who have believed: (F)in My name they will cast out demons, they will (G)speak with new tongues;

 18they will (H)pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will (I)lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

 19So then, when the Lord Jesus had (J)spoken to them, He (K)was received up into heaven and (L)sat down at the right hand of God.

 20And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.] [[a]And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.]

The LORD'S Glory and Man's Dignity.

For the choir director; on the Gittith. A Psalm of David.

    1O LORD, our Lord,
         How majestic is Your name in all the earth,
         Who have (A)displayed Your splendor above the heavens!
    2(B)From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established (C)strength
         Because of Your adversaries,
         To make (D)the enemy and the revengeful cease.
    3When I (E)consider (F)Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
         The (G)moon and the stars, which You have ordained;
    4(H)What is man that You take thought of him,
         And the son of man that You care for him?
    5Yet You have made him a (I)little lower than God,
         And (J)You crown him with (K)glory and majesty!
    6You make him to (L)rule over the works of Your hands;
         You have (M)put all things under his feet,
    7All sheep and oxen,
         And also the beasts of the field,
    8The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,
         Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
    9(N)O LORD, our Lord,
         How majestic is Your name in all the earth!

Description of a Citizen of Zion.

A Psalm of David.

    1O LORD, who may abide (A)in Your tent?
         Who may dwell on Your (B)holy hill?
    2He who (C)walks with integrity, and works righteousness,
         And (D)speaks truth in his heart.
    3He (E)does not slander with his tongue,
         Nor (F)does evil to his neighbor,
         Nor (G)takes up a reproach against his friend;
    4In whose eyes a reprobate is despised,
         But who (H)honors those who fear the LORD;
         He (I)swears to his own hurt and does not change;
    5He (J)does not put out his money [a]at interest,
         Nor (K)does he take a bribe against the innocent
         (L)He who does these things will never be shaken.

Praise for Deliverance.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

    1O LORD, in Your strength the king will (A)be glad,
         And in Your [a]salvation how greatly he will rejoice!
    2You have (B)given him his heart's desire,
         And You have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah.
    3For You (C)meet him with the blessings of good things;
         You set a (D)crown of fine gold on his head.
    4He asked life of You,
         You (E)gave it to him,
         (F)Length of days forever and ever.
    5His (G)glory is great through Your [b]salvation,
         (H)Splendor and majesty You place upon him.
    6For You make him most (I)blessed forever;
         You make him joyful (J)with gladness in Your presence.
    7For the king (K)trusts in the LORD,
         And through the lovingkindness of the Most High (L)he will not be shaken.
    8Your hand will (M)find out all your enemies;
         Your right hand will find out those who hate you.
    9You will make them (N)as a fiery oven in the time of your anger;
         The LORD will (O)swallow them up in His wrath,
         And (P)fire will devour them.
    10Their [c]offspring You will destroy from the earth,
         And their [d](Q)descendants from among the sons of men.
    11Though they (R)intended evil against You
         And (S)devised a plot,
         They will not succeed.
    12For You will (T)make them turn their back;
         You will aim (U)with Your bowstrings at their faces.
    13Be exalted, O LORD, in Your strength;
         We will (V)sing and praise Your power.

God the King of the Earth.

For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

    1O (A)clap your hands, all peoples;
         (B)Shout to God with the voice of joy.
    2For the LORD Most High is to be (C)feared,
         A (D)great King over all the earth.
    3He (E)subdues peoples under us
         And nations under our feet.
    4He chooses our (F)inheritance for us,
         The (G)glory of Jacob whom He loves. Selah.
    5God has (H)ascended with a shout,
         The LORD, with the (I)sound of a trumpet.
    6(J)Sing praises to God, sing praises;
         Sing praises to (K)our King, sing praises.

The King of Glory Entering Zion.

A Psalm of David.

    1The (A)earth is the LORD'S, and [a]all it contains,
         The (B)world, and those who dwell in it.
    2For He has (C)founded it upon the seas
         And established it upon the rivers.
    3Who may (D)ascend into the (E)hill of the LORD?
         And who may stand in His holy (F)place?
    4He who has (G)clean hands and a (H)pure heart,
         Who has not (I)lifted up his soul to falsehood
         And has not (J)sworn deceitfully.
    5He shall receive a (K)blessing from the LORD
         And (L)righteousness from the God of his salvation.
    6This is the generation of those who (M)seek Him,
         Who seek Your face--even Jacob. Selah.
    7(N)Lift up your heads, O gates,

         The LORD (P)strong and mighty,
         The LORD (Q)mighty in battle.
    9Lift up your heads, O gates,
         And lift them up, O [c]ancient doors,

The God of Sinai and of the Sanctuary.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David. A Song.

    1Let (A)God arise, let His enemies be scattered,
         And let those who hate Him flee before Him.
    2As (B)smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
         As (C)wax melts before the fire,
         So let the (D)wicked perish before God.
    3But let the (E)righteous be glad; let them exult before God;
         Yes, let them rejoice with gladness.
    4Sing to God, (F)sing praises to His name;
         (G)Lift up a song for Him who (H)rides through the deserts,
         Whose (I)name is the LORD, and exult before Him.
    5A (J)father of the fatherless and a (K)judge [a]for the widows,
         Is God in His (L)holy habitation.
    6God (M)makes a home for the lonely;
         He (N)leads out the prisoners into prosperity,
         Only (O)the rebellious dwell in a parched land.
    7O God, when You (P)went forth before Your people,
         When You (Q)marched through the wilderness, Selah.
    8The (R)earth quaked;
         The (S)heavens also dropped rain at the presence of God;
         (T)Sinai itself quaked at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
    9You (U)shed abroad a plentiful rain, O God;
         You confirmed Your inheritance when it was parched.
    10Your creatures settled in it;
         You (V)provided in Your goodness for the poor, O God.
    11The Lord gives the command;
         The (W)women who proclaim the good tidings are a great host:
    12"(X)Kings of armies flee, they flee,
         And she who remains at home will (Y)divide the spoil!"
    13[b]When you lie down (Z)among the [c]sheepfolds,
         You are like the wings of a dove covered with silver,
         And its pinions with glistening gold.
    14When the Almighty (AA)scattered the kings there,
         It was snowing in (AB)Zalmon.
    15A (AC)mountain of God is the mountain of Bashan;
         A mountain of many peaks is the mountain of Bashan.
    16Why do you look with envy, O mountains with many peaks,
         At the mountain which God has (AD)desired for His abode?
         Surely (AE)the LORD will dwell there forever.
    17The (AF)chariots of God are [d]myriads, (AG)thousands upon thousands;
         The Lord is among them as at Sinai, in holiness.
    18You have (AH)ascended on high, You have (AI)led captive Your captives;
         You have received gifts among men,
         Even among the rebellious also, that the LORD God may dwell there.
    19Blessed be the Lord, who daily (AJ)bears our burden,
         (AK)The God who is our salvation. Selah.
    20God is to us a (AL)God of deliverances;
         And (AM)to GOD the Lord belong escapes from death.
    21Surely God will (AN)shatter the head of His enemies,
         The hairy crown of him who goes on in his guilty deeds.
    22The Lord said, "(AO)I will bring them back from Bashan.
         I will bring them back from the depths of the sea;
    23That (AP)your foot may shatter them in blood,
         The tongue of your (AQ)dogs may have its portion from your enemies."
    24They have seen (AR)Your procession, O God,
         The procession of my God, my King, (AS)into the sanctuary.
    25The (AT)singers went on, the musicians after them,
         In the midst of the (AU)maidens beating tambourines.
    26(AV)Bless God in the congregations,
         Even the LORD, you who are of the (AW)fountain of Israel.
    27There is (AX)Benjamin, the youngest, ruling them,
         The princes of Judah in their throng,
         The princes of (AY)Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali.
    28Your God has (AZ)commanded your strength;
         Show Yourself strong, O God, (BA)who have acted on our behalf.
    29Because of Your temple at Jerusalem
         (BB)Kings will bring gifts to You.
    30Rebuke the (BC)beasts in the reeds,
         The herd of (BD)bulls with the calves of the peoples,
         Trampling under foot the pieces of silver;
         He has (BE)scattered the peoples who delight in war.
    31Envoys will come out of (BF)Egypt;
         (BG)Ethiopia will quickly stretch out her hands to God.
    32Sing to God, O (BH)kingdoms of the earth,
         (BI)Sing praises to the Lord, Selah.
    33To Him who (BJ)rides upon the (BK)highest heavens, which are from ancient times;
         Behold, (BL)He speaks forth with His voice, a (BM)mighty voice.
    34(BN)Ascribe strength to God;

The Whole Creation Invoked to Praise the LORD.

    1Praise the LORD!
         Praise the LORD (A)from the heavens;
         Praise Him (B)in the heights!
    2Praise Him, (C)all His angels;
         Praise Him, (D)all His hosts!
    3Praise Him, sun and moon;
         Praise Him, all stars of light!
    4Praise Him, (E)highest heavens,
         And the (F)waters that are above the heavens!
    5Let them praise the name of the LORD,
         For (G)He commanded and they were created.
    6He has also (H)established them forever and ever;
         He has made a (I)decree which will not pass away.
    7Praise the LORD from the earth,
         (J)Sea monsters and all (K)deeps;
    8(L)Fire and hail, (M)snow and (N)clouds;
         (O)Stormy wind, (P)fulfilling His word;
    9(Q)Mountains and all hills;
         Fruit (R)trees and all cedars;
    10(S)Beasts and all cattle;
         (T)Creeping things and winged fowl;
    11(U)Kings of the earth and all peoples;
         Princes and all judges of the earth;
    12Both young men and virgins;
         Old men and children.
    13Let them praise the name of the LORD,
         For His (V)name alone is exalted;
         His (W)glory is above earth and heaven.
    14And He has (X)lifted up a horn for His people,
         (Y)Praise for all His godly ones;
         Even for the sons of Israel, a people (Z)near to Him.
         Praise the LORD!

Second Reading: Lk. 17:1-19

Instructions
 1He said to His disciples, "(A)It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come!

 2"(B)It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.

 3"Be on your guard! (C)If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.

 4"And if he sins against you (D)seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' forgive him."

 5(E)The apostles said to (F)the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

 6And (G)the Lord said, "If you had faith like (H)a mustard seed, you would say to this (I)mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and be planted in the sea'; and it would obey you.

 7"Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come immediately and sit down to eat'?

 8"But will he not say to him, '(J)Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink'?

 9"He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he?

 10"So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'"

Ten Lepers Cleansed
 11While He was (K)on the way to Jerusalem, (L)He was passing between Samaria and Galilee.

 12As He entered a village, ten leprous men who (M)stood at a distance met Him;

 13and they raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, (N)Master, have mercy on us!"

 14When He saw them, He said to them, "(O)Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they were going, they were cleansed.

 15Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, (P)glorifying God with a loud voice,

 16and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a (Q)Samaritan.

 17Then Jesus answered and said, "Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine--where are they?

 18"Was no one found who returned to (R)give glory to God, except this foreigner?"

 19And He said to him, "Stand up and go; (S)your faith [a]has made you well."
