Ascension

Collect (LSB)

Almighty God, as Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, ascended into the heavens, so may we also ascend in heart and mind and continually dwell there with Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament (LSB): 2 Kings 2:5-15

5(A) The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?" And he answered, "Yes, I know it; keep quiet."

 6Then Elijah said to him,(B) "Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on. 7Fifty men of(C) the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8Then Elijah(D) took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water,(E) and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.

 9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me." 10And he said, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so." 11And as they still went on and talked, behold,(F) chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12And Elisha saw it and he cried, "My father, my father!(G) The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw him no more.

   Then he took hold of his own clothes(H) and tore them in two pieces. 13And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" And when he had struck the water,(I) the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.

Elisha Succeeds Elijah
 15Now when(J) the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him opposite them, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

15For thus says(A) the One who is high and lifted up,
   who inhabits eternity, whose name is(B) Holy:(C) "I dwell in the high and holy place,
   and also(D) with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,(E) to revive the spirit of the lowly,

Epistle: Acts 1:1-11

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

 1In the first book, O(A) Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began(B) to do and teach, 2until the day when(C) he was taken up, after he(D) had given commands(E) through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3(F) He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

 4And while staying[a] with them(G) he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me; 5for(H) John baptized with water,(I) but you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

The Ascension

 6So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord,(J) will you at this time(K) restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7He said to them, (L) "It is not for you to know(M) times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8But you will receive(N) power(O) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and(P) you will be(Q) my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and(R) Samaria, and(S) to the end of the earth." 9And when he had said these things, as they were looking on,(T) he was lifted up, and(U) a cloud took him out of their sight. 10And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold,(V) two(W) men stood by them in(X) white robes, 11and said,(Y) "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven,(Z) will(AA) come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."

Gospel: Mark 16:14-20

The Great Commission

 14Afterward(A) he appeared(B) to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their(C) unbelief and(D) hardness of heart, because(E) they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15And he said to them, (F) "Go into all the world and(G) proclaim the gospel to(H) the whole creation. 16(I) Whoever believes and is(J) baptized(K) will be saved, but(L) whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17And(M) these signs will accompany those who believe:(N) in my name they will cast out demons;(O) they will speak in new tongues; 18(P) they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them;(Q) they will lay their hands(R) on the sick, and they will recover."

 19So then the Lord Jesus,(S) after he had spoken to them,(T) was taken up into heaven and(U) sat down at the right hand of God. 20And they went out and preached everywhere, while(V) the Lord worked with them and confirmed(W) the message(X) by accompanying signs.]]

How Majestic Is Your Name

To the choirmaster: according to The(A) Gittith.[a] A Psalm of David.

 1O LORD, our Lord,
   how majestic is your(B) name in all the earth!You have set your(C) glory above the heavens.
 2(D) Out of the mouth of babies and infants,you have established(E) strength because of your foes,
   to still(F) the enemy and the avenger.

 3When I(G) look at your heavens, the work of your(H) fingers,
   the moon and the stars,(I) which you have set in place, 4(J) what is man that you are(K) mindful of him,
   and(L) the son of man that you(M) care for him?

 5Yet you have made him a little lower than(N) the heavenly beings[b]
   and crowned him with(O) glory and honor. 6You have given him(P) dominion over the works of your hands;
   (Q) you have put all things under his feet, 7all sheep and oxen,
   and also the beasts of the field, 8the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
   whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

 9O LORD, our Lord,
   how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Who Shall Dwell on Your Holy Hill?

A Psalm of David.

 1O LORD,(A) who shall sojourn in your(B) tent?
   Who shall dwell on your(C) holy hill?

 2He who(D) walks blamelessly and(E) does what is right
   and(F) speaks truth in his heart; 3who(G) does not slander with his tongue
   and does no evil to his neighbor,
   nor(H) takes up a reproach against his friend; 4(I) in whose eyes a vile person is despised,
   but who honors those who fear the LORD;who(J) swears to his own hurt and does not change; 5who(K) does not put out his money at interest
   and(L) does not take a bribe against the innocent.He who does these things shall never be(M) moved.

The King Rejoices in the LORD’s Strength

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

 1O LORD, in your(A) strength the king rejoices,
   and in your(B) salvation how greatly he exults! 2You have(C) given him his heart’s desire
   and have not withheld the request of his lips.
                         Selah
3For you(D) meet him with rich blessings;
   you set(E) a crown of(F) fine gold upon his head. 4He asked life of you; you(G) gave it to him,
   (H) length of days forever and ever. 5His(I) glory is great through your salvation;
   (J) splendor and majesty you bestow on him. 6For you make him most blessed forever;[a]
   you make him glad with the(K) joy of your presence. 7For the king trusts in the LORD,
   and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be(L) moved.

 8Your hand will(M) find out all your enemies;
   your right hand will find out those who hate you. 9You will make them as(N) a blazing oven
   when you appear.The LORD will swallow them up in his(O) wrath,
   and(P) fire will consume them. 10You(Q) will destroy their(R) descendants from the earth,
   and their offspring from among the children of man. 11Though they plan evil against you,
   though they(S) devise mischief, they will not succeed. 12For you will put them(T) to flight;
   you will(U) aim at their faces with your bows.

 13Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength!
   We will sing and praise your power.

 1(B) Clap your hands, all peoples!
   (C) Shout to God with loud songs of joy! 2For the LORD, the Most High,(D) is to be feared,
   (E) a great king over all the earth. 3He(F) subdued peoples under us,
   and nations under our feet. 4He chose our(G) heritage for us,
   (H) the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God Shall Scatter His Enemies

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A Song.

 1(A) God shall arise, his enemies shall be(B) scattered;
   and those who hate him shall flee before him! 2As(C) smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away;
   (D) as wax melts before fire,
   so the wicked shall perish before God! 3But(E) the righteous shall be glad;
   they shall exult before God;
   they shall be jubilant with joy!

 4Sing to God,(F) sing praises to his name;
   (G) lift up a song to him who(H) rides through(I) the deserts;his name is(J) the LORD;
   exult before him! 5(K) Father of the fatherless and(L) protector of widows
   is God in his holy habitation. 6God(M) settles the solitary in a home;
   he(N) leads out the prisoners to prosperity,
   but(O) the rebellious dwell in(P) a parched land.

 7O God, when you(Q) went out before your people,
   (R) when you marched through(S) the wilderness,
                         Selah
8(T) the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain,
   before God, the One of Sinai,
   before God, the God of Israel. 9(U) Rain in abundance, O God, you shed abroad;
   you restored your inheritance as it languished; 10your flock[a] found a dwelling in it;
   in your goodness, O God, you(V) provided for the needy.

 11The Lord gives(W) the word;
   (X) the women who announce the news are a great host:
 12(Y) "The kings of the armies—they flee, they flee!"The women at home(Z) divide the spoil—
 13though you men lie among(AA) the sheepfolds—the wings of a dove covered with silver,
   its pinions with shimmering gold. 14When the Almighty scatters kings there,
   let snow fall on(AB) Zalmon.

 15O mountain of God, mountain of Bashan;
   O many-peaked[b] mountain, mountain of Bashan! 16Why do you look with hatred, O many-peaked mountain,
   at the mount that God(AC) desired for his abode,
   yes, where the LORD will dwell forever? 17(AD) The chariots of God are twice ten thousand,
   thousands upon thousands;
   the Lord is among them; Sinai is now in the sanctuary. 18(AE) You ascended on high,
   (AF) leading a host of captives in your train
   and(AG) receiving gifts among men,even among(AH) the rebellious,(AI) that the LORD God may dwell there.

 19Blessed be the Lord,
   who daily(AJ) bears us up;
   God is our salvation.
                         Selah
20Our God is a God of salvation,
   (AK) and to GOD, the Lord, belong deliverances from death. 21(AL) But God will strike the heads of his enemies,
   the hairy crown of him who walks in his guilty ways. 22The Lord said,
   "I will bring them back(AM) from Bashan,(AN) I will bring them back from the depths of the sea, 23that you may(AO) strike your feet in their blood,
   that(AP) the tongues of your dogs may have their portion from the foe."

 24Your procession is[c] seen, O God,
   the procession of my God, my King, into the sanctuary— 25(AQ) the singers in front,(AR) the musicians last,
   between them(AS) virgins playing tambourines: 26(AT) "Bless God in the great congregation,
   the LORD, O you[d] who are of(AU) Israel’s fountain!" 27There is(AV) Benjamin, the least of them, in the lead,
   the princes of Judah in their throng,
   the princes of(AW) Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali.

 28(AX) Summon your power, O God,[e]
   the power, O God, by which you have worked for us. 29Because of your temple at Jerusalem
   kings shall(AY) bear gifts to you. 30Rebuke(AZ) the beasts that dwell among the reeds,
   the herd of(BA) bulls with the calves of the peoples.(BB) Trample underfoot those who lust after tribute;
   scatter the peoples who delight in war.[f] 31Nobles shall come from(BC) Egypt;
   (BD) Cush shall hasten to(BE) stretch out her hands to God.

 32(BF) O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God;
   sing praises to the Lord,
                         Selah

Second Reading: Lk. 17:1-19

Temptations to Sin
 1And he said to his disciples, (A) "Temptations to sin[a] are(B) sure to come, but(C) woe to the one through whom they come! 2(D) It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.[b] 3Pay attention to yourselves!(E) If your brother sins,(F) rebuke him, and if he repents,(G) forgive him, 4and if he sins against you(H) seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him."
Increase Our Faith
 5(I) The apostles said to the Lord,(J) "Increase our faith!" 6And the Lord said, (K) "If you had faith like(L) a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this(M) mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.
Unworthy Servants
 7"Will any one of you who has a servant[c] plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and recline at table'? 8Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, and(N) dress properly,[d] and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink'? 9Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are(O) unworthy servants;[e] we have only done what was our duty.'"
Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
 11(P) On the way to Jerusalem(Q) he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers,[f](R) who stood at a distance 13and lifted up their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." 14When he saw them he said to them, "Go and(S) show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. 15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back,(T) praising God with a loud voice; 16and(U) he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was(V) a Samaritan. 17Then Jesus answered, "Were not(W) ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18Was no one found to return and(X) give praise to God except this(Y) foreigner?" 19And he said to him, "Rise and go your way;(Z) your faith has made you well."[g]
