Cantate (Easter 5)

Explanation of the Week

Though Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him, yet this is to our advantage. For Jesus-who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes for us before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven-has sent the Helper, the Spirit of Truth. (Jn 16:5-15) "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights" through Christ. (James 1:16-21) The Holy Spirit helps us by taking of what is Christ's and declaring it to us. In the Word of truth the Spirit works repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ, and victory over the devil. For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit we have been brought forth to new life in Him who is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Confident of our resurrection with Christ we confess, "Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid." (Is 12:1-6)

Introit

Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! Alle- | luia!*

Collect (LSB)

O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will. Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Collect (TLH)

O God, who makest the minds of the faithful to be of one will, grant unto Thy people that they may love what Thou commandest and desire what Thou dost promise, that among the manifold changes of this world our hearts may there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Collecta Latina

Old Testament (LSB): Isaiah 12:1-6

Epistle: Jas. 1:16-21

 16(A)Do not be deceived, (B)my beloved brethren.

 17Every good thing given and every perfect gift is (C)from above, coming down from (D)the Father of lights, (E)with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

 18In the exercise of (F)His will He (G)brought us forth by (H)the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of (I)first fruits among His creatures.

 19[a]This (J)you know, (K)my beloved brethren But everyone must be quick to hear, (L)slow to speak and (M)slow to anger;

 20for (N)the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.

 21Therefore, (O)putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive (P)the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

The Holy Spirit Promised

 5"But now (A)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, '(B)Where are You going?'

 6"But because I have said these things to you, (C)sorrow has filled your heart.

 7"But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the (D)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (E)I will send Him to you.

 8"And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

 9concerning sin, (F)because they do not believe in Me;

 10and concerning (G)righteousness, because (H)I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;

 11(I)and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

 12"I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

 13"But when He, (J)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (K)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

 14"He will (L)glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

 15"(M)All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

Unjust Judgments Rebuked.

A Psalm of Asaph.

    1God takes His (A)stand in His own congregation;
         He (B)judges in the midst of the (C)rulers.
    2How long will you (D)judge unjustly
         And (E)show partiality to the wicked? Selah.
    3(F)Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
         Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.
    4(G)Rescue the weak and needy;
         Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.
    5They (H)do not know nor do they understand;
         They (I)walk about in darkness;
         All the (J)foundations of the earth are shaken.
    6I (K)said, "You are gods,
         And all of you are (L)sons of the Most High.
    7"Nevertheless (M)you will die like men
         And fall like any (N)one of the princes."
    8(O)Arise, O God, (P)judge the earth!
         For it is You who (Q)possesses all the nations.

Thanksgiving for Return from Captivity.

A Song of Ascents.

    1When the LORD (A)brought back the captive ones of Zion,
         We were (B)like those who dream.
    2Then our (C)mouth was filled with laughter
         And our (D)tongue with joyful shouting;
         Then they said among the nations,
         "The LORD has (E)done great things for them."
    3The LORD has done great things for us;
         We are (F)glad.
    4Restore our captivity, O LORD,
         As the (G)streams in the South.
    5Those who sow in (H)tears shall reap with (I)joyful shouting.
    6He who goes to and fro weeping, carrying his bag of seed,
         Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

Woes upon the Pharisees

 37Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table.

 38When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first (A)ceremonially washed before the meal.

 39But (B)the Lord said to him, "Now (C)you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness.

 40"(D)You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also?

 41"But (E)give that which is within as charity, and then all things are (F)clean for you.

 42"(G)But woe to you Pharisees! For you (H)pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

 43"Woe to you Pharisees! For you (I)love the chief seats in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the market places.

 44"(J)Woe to you! For you are like concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it."

 45One of the [a](K)lawyers said to Him in reply, "Teacher, when You say this, You insult us too."

 46But He said, "Woe to you (L)lawyers as well! For (M)you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

 47"(N)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.

 48"So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.

 49"For this reason also (O)the wisdom of God said, '(P)I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will persecute,

 50so that the blood of all the prophets, shed (Q)since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,

 51from (R)the blood of Abel to (S)the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.'

 52"Woe to you (T)lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; (U)you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering."

 53When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects,

 54(V)plotting against Him (W)to catch Him in something He might say.
