Thursday of Jubilate (Easter 4)

First Reading: Lev. 17:1-16

Blood for Atonement
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

"Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel and say to them, 'This is what the LORD has commanded, saying,

"Any man from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or who slaughters it outside the camp,

and (A)has not brought it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD, bloodguiltiness is to be reckoned to that man. He has shed blood and that man shall be cut off from among his people.

"The reason is so that the sons of Israel may bring their sacrifices which they were sacrificing in the open field, that they may bring them in to the LORD, at the doorway of the tent of meeting to the priest, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the LORD.

"The priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of the LORD at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and (B)offer up the fat in smoke as a soothing aroma to the LORD.

"(C)They shall no longer sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat demons with which they play the harlot. This shall be a permanent statute to them throughout their generations."'

"Then you shall say to them, 'Any man from the house of Israel, or from the aliens who sojourn among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice,

and (D)does not bring it to the doorway of the tent of meeting to offer it to the LORD, that man also shall be cut off from his people.

'(E)And any man from the house of Israel, or from the aliens who sojourn among them, who eats any blood, (F)I will set My face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people.

'For (G)the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for (H)it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.'

"Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, 'No person among you may eat blood, nor may any alien who sojourns among you eat blood.'

"So when any man from the sons of Israel, or from the aliens who sojourn among them, in hunting catches a beast or a bird which may be eaten, (I)he shall pour out its blood and cover it with earth.

"(J)For as for the life of all flesh, its blood is identified with its life. Therefore I said to the sons of Israel, 'You are not to eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it shall be cut off.'

"(K)When any person eats an animal which dies or is torn by beasts, whether he is a native or an alien, he shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening; then he will become clean.

"But if he does not wash them or bathe his body, then (L)he shall bear his guilt."

Second Reading: Lk. 10:23-42

(A)Turning to the disciples, He said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see,

for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them."

(B)And a (C)lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?"

And he answered, "(D)YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; (E)DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE."

But wishing (F)to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

The Good Samaritan
Jesus replied and said, "A man was (G)going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.

"And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

"Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

"But a (H)Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,

and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.

"On the next day he took out two [a]denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.'

"Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?"

And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same."

Martha and Mary
Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named (I)Martha welcomed Him into her home.

She had a sister called (J)Mary, who was (K)seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word.

But (L)Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me."

But the Lord answered and said to her, "(M)Martha, Martha, you are (N)worried and bothered about so many things;

(O)but only one thing is necessary, for (P)Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her."
