Tuesday of Jubilate (Easter 4)

First Reading: Lev. 10:1-20

The Sin of Nadab and Abihu
Now (A)Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective (B)firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them.

(C)And fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.

Then Moses said to Aaron, "It is what the LORD spoke, saying,
'By those who (D)come near Me I (E)will be treated as holy,
And before all the people I will (F)be honored.'"
         So Aaron, therefore, kept silent.

Moses called also to (G)Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Aaron's uncle Uzziel, and said to them, "Come forward, carry your relatives away from the front of the sanctuary to the outside of the camp."

So they came forward and carried them still in their (H)tunics to the outside of the camp, as Moses had said.

Then Moses said to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "(I)Do not [a]uncover your heads nor tear your clothes, so that you will not die and that He will not (J)become wrathful against all the congregation. But your kinsmen, the whole house of Israel, shall bewail the burning which the LORD has brought about.

"You shall not even go out from the doorway of the tent of meeting, or you will die; for (K)the LORD'S anointing oil is upon you." So they did according to the word of Moses.

The LORD then spoke to Aaron, saying,

"(L)Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die--it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations--

and (M)so as to make a distinction between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean,

and (N)so as to teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them through Moses."

Then Moses spoke to Aaron, and to his surviving sons, (O)Eleazar and Ithamar, "(P)Take the grain offering that is left over from the LORD'S offerings by fire and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy.

"You shall eat it, moreover, in a holy place, because it is your due and your sons' due out of the LORD'S offerings by fire; for thus I have been commanded.

"(Q)The breast of the wave offering, however, and the thigh of the offering you may eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you; for they have been given as your due and your sons' due out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the sons of Israel.

"(R)The thigh offered by lifting up and the breast offered by waving they shall bring along with the offerings by fire of the portions of fat, to present as a wave offering before the LORD; so it shall be a thing perpetually due you and your sons with you, just as the LORD has commanded."

But Moses searched carefully for the (S)goat of the sin offering, and behold, it had been burned up! So he was angry with Aaron's surviving sons Eleazar and Ithamar, saying,

"Why (T)did you not eat the sin offering at the holy place? For it is most holy, and He gave it to you to bear away (U)the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD.

"Behold, (V)since its blood had not been brought inside, into the sanctuary, you should certainly have (W)eaten it in the sanctuary, just as I commanded."

But Aaron spoke to Moses, "Behold, this very day they (X)presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD. When things like these happened to me, if I had eaten a sin offering today, would it have been good in the sight of the LORD?"

When Moses heard that, it seemed good in his sight.

Second Reading: Lk. 9:37-62

(A)On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him.

And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, "Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy,

and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves.

"I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not."

And Jesus answered and said, "You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."

While he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father.

And they were all amazed at the (B)greatness of God (C)But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples,

"Let these words sink into your ears; (D)for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men."

But (E)they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.

The Test of Greatness
(F)An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest.

But Jesus, (G)knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side,

and said to them, "(H)Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; (I)for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great."

(J)John answered and said, "(K)Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us."

But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder him; (L)for he who is not against you is for you."

When the days were approaching for (M)His ascension, He was determined (N)to go to Jerusalem;

and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the (O)Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.

But they did not receive Him, (P)because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.

When His disciples (Q)James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to (R)command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"

But He turned and rebuked them, [and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of;

for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them."] And they went on to another village.

Exacting Discipleship
(S)As they were going along the road, (T)someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go."

And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but (U)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."

And He said to another, "(V)Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."

But He said to him, "Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and (W)proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God."

Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord; but (X)first permit me to say good-bye to those at home."

But Jesus said to him, "(Y)No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."
