Monday of Jubilate (Easter 4)

First Reading: Lev. 9:1-24

Aaron Offers Sacrifices
 1Now it came about (A)on the eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel;

2and he said to Aaron, "(B)Take for yourself a calf, a bull, for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without defect, and offer them before the LORD.

3"Then to the sons of Israel you shall speak, saying, 'Take a male goat for a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both one year old, without defect, for a burnt offering,

4and an ox and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD, and a grain offering mixed with oil; for today (C)the LORD will appear to you.'"

5So they took what Moses had commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the whole congregation came near and stood before the LORD.

6Moses said, "This is the thing which the LORD has commanded you to do, that (D)the glory of the LORD may appear to you."

7Moses then said to Aaron, "Come near to the altar and (E)offer your sin offering and your burnt offering, that you may make atonement for yourself and for the people; then make the offering for the people, that you may make atonement for them, just as the LORD has commanded."

8(F)So Aaron came near to the altar and slaughtered the calf of the sin offering which was for himself.

9(G)Aaron's sons presented the blood to him; and he dipped his finger in the blood and (H)put some on the horns of the altar, and poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.

10The fat and the kidneys and the lobe of the liver of the sin offering, he then offered up in smoke on the altar just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

11(I)The flesh and the skin, however, he burned with fire outside the camp.

12Then he slaughtered the burnt offering; and Aaron's sons handed the blood to him and he sprinkled it around on the altar.

13They handed the burnt offering to him in pieces, with the head, and he offered them up in smoke on the altar.

14He also washed the entrails and the legs, and offered them up in smoke with the burnt offering on the altar.

15Then he presented the people's offering, and took the (J)goat of the sin offering which was for the people, and slaughtered it and offered it for sin, like the first.

16He also presented the burnt offering, and offered it according to (K)the ordinance.

17Next he presented (L)the grain offering, and filled his hand with some of it and offered it up in smoke on the altar, (M)besides the burnt offering of the morning.

18Then (N)he slaughtered the ox and the ram, the sacrifice of peace offerings which was for the people; and Aaron's sons handed the blood to him and he sprinkled it around on the altar.

19As for the portions of fat from the ox and from the ram, the fat tail, and the fat (O)covering, and the kidneys and the lobe of the liver,

20they now placed the portions of fat on the breasts; and he offered them up in smoke on the altar.

21But (P)the breasts and the right thigh Aaron presented as a wave offering before the LORD, just as Moses had commanded.

22Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and (Q)blessed them, and he stepped down after making the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings.

23Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting. When they came out and blessed the people, (R)the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people.

24(S)Then fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the portions of fat on the altar; and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.

Second Reading: Lk. 9:18-36

18(A)And it happened that while He was (B)praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, "Who do the people say that I am?"

19They answered and said, "John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again."

20And He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered and said, "(C)The Christ of God."

21But He (D)warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone,

22(E)saying, "(F)The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day."

23And He was saying to them all, "(G)If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

24"For (H)whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.

25"For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and (I)loses or forfeits himself?

26"(J)For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

27"But I say to you truthfully, (K)there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."

The Transfiguration
28(L)Some eight days after these sayings, He took along (M)Peter and John and James, and (N)went up on the mountain (O)to pray.

29And while He was (P)praying, the appearance of His face (Q)became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.

30And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah,

31who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His (R)departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

32Now Peter and his companions (S)had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.

33And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, "(T)Master, it is good for us to be here; (U)let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah"--(V)not realizing what he was saying.

34While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

35Then (W)a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "(X)This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!"

36And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And (Y)they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
