Misericordias Domini (Easter 3)

Explanation of the Week

Our Lord Jesus is the Good Shepherd. (Jn 10:11-16) He is not like the hireling, who cares nothing for the sheep and only for himself, who flees when he sees the wolf coming. Rather, Jesus is the Good Shepherd who seeks out His scattered sheep to deliver them. (Ezek 34:11-16). He gathers them and feeds them in rich pasture. He binds up the broken and strengthens the sick. He lays down His life for wandering and wayward sheep. On the cross Christ bore in His body the attacks of the predators of sin and death and the devil for you that you might be saved. He now lives to restore your souls in the still waters of baptism, to lead you in the paths of righteousness by the voice of His Gospel, to prepare the table of His holy supper before you, that you may dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23) "For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls." (1 Peter 2:21-25)

Introit

Antiphon:
The earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. Alle- | luia.*
     By the word of the LORD the heavens were made. Alle- | luia! (Psalm 33:5-6)

Psalm:Rejoice in the LORD, O you | righteous!*
     For praise from the upright is | beautiful.
Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who | fear Him,*
     on those who hope in His | mercy.
To deliver their | soul from death,*
     and to keep them alive in | famine.
Our soul waits | for the LORD;*
     He is our help | and our shield. (Psalm 33:1, 18-20)

Collect (LSB)

O God, through the humiliation of Your Son You raised up the fallen world. Grant to Your faithful people, rescued from the peril of everlasting death, perpetual gladness and eternal joys; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Collect (TLH)

God, who by the humiliation of Thy Son didst raise up the fallen world, grant unto Thy faithful ones perpetual gladness, and those whom Thou hast delivered from the danger of everlasting death do Thou make partakers of eternal joys; through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Collecta Latina

The Restoration of Israel

 11For thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I Myself will (A)search for My sheep and seek them out.

 12"(B)As a shepherd cares for his herd in the day when he is among his scattered sheep, so I will (C)care for My sheep and will deliver them from all the places to which they were scattered on a (D)cloudy and gloomy day.

 13"I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries and bring them to their own land; and I will (E)feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the (F)streams, and in all the inhabited places of the land.

 14"I will feed them in a (G)good pasture, and their grazing ground will be on the mountain heights of Israel There they will lie down on good grazing ground and feed in (H)rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.

 15"I will (I)feed My flock and I will lead them to rest," declares the Lord GOD.

 16"I will seek the lost, bring back the scattered, bind up the broken and strengthen the sick; but the (J)fat and the strong I will destroy I will (K)feed them with judgment.

Epistle: 1 Pet. 2:21-25

Christ Is Our Example

 21For (A)you have been called for this purpose, (B)since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you (C)an example for you to follow in His steps,

 22WHO (D)COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;

 23and while being (E)reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;

 24and He Himself (F)bore our sins in His body on the (G)cross, so that we (H)might die to sin and live to righteousness; for (I)by His wounds you were (J)healed.

 25For you were (K)continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the (L)Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.

Verse

Alle- | luia.*
     Alle- | luia.
Then was the Lord Jesus | known to them*
     in the breaking of bread. Alle- | luia.
I am the good | shepherd;*
     and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. Alle- | luia. (Luke 24:35, John 10:14)

Gospel: John 10:11-16

 11"(A)I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd (B)lays down His life for the sheep.

 12"He who is a hired hand, and not a (C)shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

 13"He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep.

 14"(D)I am the good shepherd, and (E)I know My own and My own know Me,

 15even as (F)the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and (G)I lay down My life for the sheep.

 16"I have (H)other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become (I)one flock with (J)one shepherd.

Offertory

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; and I will lift up my hands in Your name, Alleluia. (Psalm 63)

Matins Psalm(s): Ps. 70

Prayer for Help against Persecutors.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David; for a memorial.

    1(A)O God, hasten to deliver me;
         O LORD, hasten to my help!
    2(B)Let those be ashamed and humiliated
         Who seek my life;
         Let those be turned back and dishonored
         Who delight in my hurt.
    3(C)Let those be turned back because of their shame
         Who say, "Aha, aha!"
    4Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
         And let those who love Your salvation say continually,
         "Let God be magnified."
    5But (D)I am afflicted and needy;
         (E)Hasten to me, O God!
         You are my help and my deliverer;
         O LORD, do not delay.

First Reading: Ex. 32:15-35

 15(A)Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, (B)tablets which were written on both sides; they were written on one side and the other.

 16The tablets were God's work, and the writing was God's writing engraved on the tablets.

 17Now when Joshua heard the sound of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, "There is a sound of war in the camp."

 18But he said,
         "It is not the sound of the cry of triumph,
         Nor is it the sound of the cry of defeat;
         But the sound of singing I hear."

Moses' Anger
 19It came about, as soon as Moses came near the camp, that (C)he saw the calf and the dancing; and Moses' anger burned, and (D)he threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain.

 20(E)He took the calf which they had made and burned it with fire, and ground it to powder, and scattered it over the surface of the water and made the sons of Israel drink it.

 21Then Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people do to you, that you have brought such great sin upon them?"

 22Aaron said, "Do not let the anger of my lord burn; you know the people yourself, (F)that they are prone to evil.

 23"For (G)they said to me, 'Make a god for us who will go before us; for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'

 24"I said to them, 'Whoever has any gold, let them tear it off.' So they gave it to me, and (H)I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf."

 25Now when Moses saw that the people were out of control--for Aaron had (I)let them get out of control to be a derision among their enemies--

 26then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, "Whoever is for the LORD, come to me!" And all the sons of Levi gathered together to him.

 27He said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Every man of you put his sword upon his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and kill every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.'"

 28So (J)the sons of Levi did as Moses instructed, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day.

 29Then Moses said, "Dedicate yourselves today to the LORD--for every man has been against his son and against his brother--in order that He may bestow a blessing upon you today."

 30On the next day Moses said to the people, "(K)You yourselves have committed a great sin; and now I am going up to the LORD, perhaps I can (L)make atonement for your sin."

 31Then Moses returned to the LORD, and said, "Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a (M)god of gold for themselves.

 32"But now, if You will, forgive their sin--and if not, please blot me out from Your (N)book which You have written!"

 33The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, (O)I will blot him out of My book.

 34"But go now, lead the people (P)where I told you Behold, (Q)My angel shall go before you; nevertheless (R)in the day when I punish, (S)I will punish them for their sin."

 35(T)Then the LORD smote the people, because of (U)what they did with the calf which Aaron had made.

Vespers Psalm(s): Ps. 23

The LORD, the Psalmist's Shepherd.

A Psalm of David.

    1The LORD is my (A)shepherd,
         I shall (B)not want.
    2He makes me lie down in (C)green pastures;
         He (D)leads me beside (E)quiet waters.
    3He (F)restores my soul;
         He (G)guides me in the (H)paths of righteousness
         For His name's sake.
    4Even though I (I)walk through the [a]valley of the shadow of death,
         I (J)fear no [b]evil, for (K)You are with me;
         Your (L)rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
    5You (M)prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
         You have (N)anointed my head with oil;
         My (O)cup overflows.
    6Surely (P)goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
         And I will [c](Q)dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

 39And He also spoke a parable to them: "(A)A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?

 40"(B)A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.

 41"Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

 42"Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

 43"(C)For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit.

 44"(D)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush.

 45"(E)The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; (F)for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.

Builders and Foundations
 46"(G)Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

 47"(H)Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like:

 48he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

 49"But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great."
