Friday of Quasimodo Geniti (Easter 2)

First Reading: Ex. 31:1-18

The Skilled Craftsmen
 1(A)Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

 2"See, I have called by name Bezalel, the (B)son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.

 3"I have (C)filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship,

 4to make artistic designs for work in gold, in silver, and in bronze,

 5and in the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of wood, that he may work in all kinds of craftsmanship.

 6"And behold, I Myself have appointed with him (D)Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all who are skillful I have put skill, that they may make all that I have commanded you:

 7(E)the tent of meeting, and (F)the ark of testimony, and (G)the mercy seat upon it, and all the furniture of the tent,

 8(H)the table also and its utensils, and the (I)pure gold lampstand with all its utensils, and (J)the altar of incense,

 9(K)the altar of burnt offering also with all its utensils, and (L)the laver and its stand,

 10the (M)woven garments as well, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, with which to carry on their priesthood;

 11(N)the anointing oil also, and the (O)fragrant incense for the holy place, they are to make them according to all that I have commanded you."

The Sign of the Sabbath
 12The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

 13"But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, '(P)You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is (Q)a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you.

 14'Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. (R)Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.

 15'(S)For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a (T)sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD; (U)whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death.

 16'So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.'

 17"(V)It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; (W)for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed."

 18When He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses (X)the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, (Y)written by the finger of God.

Second Reading: Lk. 6:1-19

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
 1(A)Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples (B)were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain.

 2But some of the Pharisees said, "Why do you do what (C)is not lawful on the Sabbath?"

 3And Jesus answering them said, "Have you not even read (D)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,

 4how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [a]consecrated bread which (E)is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?"

 5And He was saying to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

 6(F)On another Sabbath He entered (G)the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.

 7The scribes and the Pharisees (H)were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.

 8But He (I)knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!" And he got up and came forward.

 9And Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?"

 10After (J)looking around at them all, He said to him, "Stretch out your hand!" And he did so; and his hand was restored.

 11But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

Choosing the Twelve
 12It was at this time that He went off to (K)the mountain to (L)pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.

 13And when day came, (M)He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as (N)apostles:

 14Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;

 15and (O)Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;

 16Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

 17Jesus (P)came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was (Q)a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of (R)Tyre and Sidon,

 18who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured.

 19And all the people were trying to (S)touch Him, for (T)power was coming from Him and healing them all.
