Johann Walter, Kantor

First Reading: Ex. 16:13-35

13In the evening(A) quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning(B) dew lay around the camp. 14And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another,(C) "What is it?"[a] For they(D) did not know what it was. And Moses said to them,(E) "It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. 16This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an(F) omer,[b] according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.'" 17And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. 18But when they measured it with an omer,(G) whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. 19And Moses said to them, "Let no one leave any of it over till the morning." 20But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and(H) it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. 21Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

22On(I) the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23he said to them, "This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Tomorrow is a day of(J) solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.'" 24So they laid it aside till the morning, as Moses commanded them, and(K) it did not stink, and there were no worms in it. 25Moses said, "Eat it today, for(L) today is a Sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field. 26Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none."

27On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. 28And the LORD said to Moses,(M) "How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? 29See! The LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day." 30So the people(N) rested on the seventh day.

31Now the house of Israel called its name(O) manna. It was(P) like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32Moses said, "This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'" 33And Moses said to Aaron, "Take a(Q) jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the LORD to be kept throughout your generations." 34As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before(R) the testimony to be kept. 35The people of Israel(S) ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till(T) they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

The Full Assurance of Faith

19(A) Therefore, brothers,[a] since we have confidence to enter(B) the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20by(C) the new and living way that he opened for us through(D) the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21and since we have(E) a great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts(F) sprinkled clean(G) from an evil conscience and our bodies(H) washed with pure water. 23(I) Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for(J) he who promised is faithful. 24And(K) let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25(L) not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and(M) all the more as you see(N) the Day drawing near.

26For(O) if we go on sinning deliberately(P) after receiving the knowledge of the truth,(Q) there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27(R) but a fearful expectation of judgment, and(S) a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28(T) Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy(U) on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one(V) who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned(W) the blood of the covenant(X) by which he was sanctified, and has(Y) outraged the Spirit of grace? 30For we know him who said,(Z) "Vengeance is mine; I will repay." And again,(AA) "The Lord will judge his people." 31(AB) It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32But recall the former days when, after(AC) you were enlightened, you endured(AD) a hard struggle with sufferings, 33sometimes being(AE) publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34For(AF) you had compassion on those in prison, and(AG) you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had(AH) a better possession and an abiding one. 35Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has(AI) a great reward. 36For(AJ) you have need of endurance, so that(AK) when you have done the will of God you may(AL) receive what is promised. 37For,
   (AM) "Yet a little while,
and(AN) the coming one will come and will not delay; 38(AO) but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,my soul has no pleasure in him."

39But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
