Wednesday of Judica (Lent 5)

  1. First Reading
  2. Second Reading

First Reading · Ex. 4:1-18

Moses Given Powers
1Then Moses said, "What if they will not believe me or (A)listen to what I say? For they may say, '(B)The LORD has not appeared to you.'"

2The LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" And he said, "(C)A staff."

3Then He said, "Throw it on the ground." So he threw it on the ground, and (D)it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it.

4But the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand and grasp it by its tail"--so he stretched out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand--

5"that (E)they may believe that (F)the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you."

6The LORD furthermore said to him, "Now put your hand into your bosom." So he put his hand into his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was (G)leprous like snow.

7Then He said, "Put your hand into your bosom again." So he put his hand into his bosom again, and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, (H)it was restored like the rest of his flesh.

8"If they will not believe you or heed the witness of the first sign, they may believe the witness of the last sign.

9"But if they will not believe even these two signs or heed what you say, then you shall take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground; and the water which you take from the Nile (I)will become blood on the dry ground."

10Then Moses said to the LORD, "Please, Lord, (J)I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue."

11The LORD said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or (K)who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?

12"Now then go, and (L)I, even I, will be with your mouth, and (M)teach you what you are to say."

13But he said, "Please, Lord, now send the message by whomever You will."

Aaron to Be Moses' Mouthpiece
14Then the anger of the LORD burned against Moses, and He said, "Is there not your brother Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. And moreover, behold, (N)he is coming out to meet you; when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.

15"You are to speak to him and (O)put the words in his mouth; and I, even I, will be with your mouth and his mouth, and I will teach you what you are to do.

16"Moreover, (P)he shall speak for you to the people; and he will be as a mouth for you and you will be as God to him.

17"You shall take in your hand (Q)this staff, (R)with which you shall perform the signs."

18Then Moses departed and returned to Jethro (S)his father-in-law and said to him, "Please, let me go, that I may return to my brethren who are in Egypt, and see if they are still alive." And Jethro said to Moses, "Go in peace."

Second Reading · Mk. 15:1-15

Jesus before Pilate
1(A)Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole [a](B)Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.

2(C)Pilate questioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "It is as you say."

3The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly.

4Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, "Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!"

5But Jesus (D)made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed.

6(E)Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.

7The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.

8The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.

9Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?"

10For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (F)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.

12Answering again, Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

 13They shouted back, "Crucify Him!"

14But Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!"

15Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (G)scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
