Thursday of Oculi (Lent 3)

First Reading: Gen. 39:1-23

Joseph's Success in Egypt

1Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the (A)Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.

2(B)The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.

3Now his master (C)saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD (D)caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.

4So Joseph (E)found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and (F)all that he owned he put in his charge.

5It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD (G)blessed the Egyptian's house on account of Joseph; thus (H)the LORD'S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.

6So he left everything he owned in Joseph's charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate. Now Joseph was (I)handsome in form and appearance.

7It came about after these events (J)that his master's wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, "(K)Lie with me."

8But (L)he refused and said to his master's wife, "Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge.

9"(M)There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife How then could I do this great evil and (N)sin against God?"

10As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.

11Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside.

12She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.

13When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside,

14she called to the men of her household and said to them, "See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed.

15"When he heard that I raised my voice and [a]screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside."

16So she left his garment beside her until his master came home.

 17Then she (O)spoke to him with these words, "The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me;

18and as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside."

Joseph Imprisoned

19Now when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, "This is what your slave did to me," (P)his anger burned.

20So Joseph's master took him and (Q)put him into the jail, the place where the king's prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail.

21But (R)the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and (S)gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.

22The chief jailer (T)committed to Joseph's charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.

23(U)The chief jailer did not supervise anything under Joseph's charge because (V)the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, (W)the LORD made to prosper.

Second Reading: Mk. 10:13-31

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13(A)And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them.

14But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; (B)for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

15"Truly I say to you, (C)whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all."

16And He (D)took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.

The Rich Young Ruler

17(E)As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and (F)knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to (G)inherit eternal life?"

18And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.

20And he said to Him, "Teacher, I have kept (I)all these things from my youth up."

21Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have (J)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

22But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.

23And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, "(K)How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!"

24The disciples (L)were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

25"(M)It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

26They were even more astonished and said to Him, "Then who can be saved?"

27Looking at them, Jesus said, "(N)With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."

28(O)Peter began to say to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You."

29Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, (P)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel's sake,

30but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in (Q)the age to come, eternal life.

31"But (R)many who are first will be last, and the last, first."
