Saturday of Reminiscere (Lent 2)

First Reading: Gen. 27:1-29

Jacob's Deception
 1Now it came about, when Isaac was old and (A)his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his (B)older son Esau and said to him, "My son." And he said to him, "Here I am."

 2(C)Isaac said, "Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death.

 3"Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and (D)hunt game for me;

 4and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that (E)my soul may bless you before I die."

 5Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home,

 6(F)Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Behold, I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, saying,

 7'Bring me some game and prepare a savory dish for me, that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of the LORD before my death.'

 8"Now therefore, my son, (G)listen to me as I command you.

 9"Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves.

 10"Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death."

 11Jacob answered his mother Rebekah, "Behold, Esau my brother is a (H)hairy man and I am a smooth man.

 12"(I)Perhaps my father will feel me, then I will be as a deceiver in his sight, and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing."

 13But his mother said to him, "Your curse be on me, my son; only (J)obey my voice, and go, get them for me."

 14So he went and got them, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made savory food such as his father loved.

 15Then Rebekah took the best (K)garments of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.

 16And she put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.

 17She also gave the savory food and the bread, which she had made, to her son Jacob.

 18Then he came to his father and said, "My father." And he said, "Here I am. Who are you, my son?"

 19Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. (L)Get up, please, sit and eat of my game, that (M)you may bless me."

 20Isaac said to his son, "How is it that you have it so quickly, my son?" And he said, "(N)Because the LORD your God caused it to happen to me."

 21Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Please come close, that (O)I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not."

 22So Jacob came close to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau."

 23He did not recognize him, because his hands were (P)hairy like his brother Esau's hands; so he blessed him.

 24And he said, "Are you really my son Esau?" And he said, "I am."

 25So he said, "Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son's game, that (Q)I may bless you." And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank.

 26Then his father Isaac said to him, "Please come close and kiss me, my son."

 27So he came close and kissed him; and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he (R)blessed him and said,
         "See, (S)the smell of my son
         Is like the smell of a field (T)which the LORD has blessed;
    28Now may (U)God give you of the dew of heaven,
         And of the (V)fatness of the earth,
         And an abundance of grain and new wine;
    29(W)May peoples serve you,
         And nations bow down to you;
         (X)Be master of your brothers,
         (Y)And may your mother's sons bow down to you
         (Z)Cursed be those who curse you,
         And blessed be those who bless you."

Second Reading: Mk. 8:22-38

 22And they came to (A)Bethsaida And they brought a blind man to Jesus and implored Him to (B)touch him.

 23Taking the blind man by the hand, He (C)brought him out of the village; and after (D)spitting on his eyes and (E)laying His hands on him, He asked him, "Do you see anything?"

 24And he looked up and said, "I see men, for I see them like trees, walking around."

 25Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly.

 26And He sent him to his home, saying, "Do not even enter (F)the village."

Peter's Confession of Christ
 27(G)Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of (H)Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, "Who do people say that I am?"

 28(I)They told Him, saying, "John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets."

 29And He continued by questioning them, "But who do you say that I am?" (J)Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ."

 30And (K)He warned them to tell no one about Him.

 31(L)And He began to teach them that (M)the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

 32And He was stating the matter (N)plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.

 33But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind Me, (O)Satan; for you are not setting your mind on [a]God's interests, but man's."

 34And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (P)take up his cross and follow Me.

 35"For (Q)whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it.

 36"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?

 37"For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

 38"For (R)whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, (S)the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He (T)comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."
