Friday of Reminiscere (Lent 2)

First Reading: Gen. 24:32-52; Gen. 24:61-67

 32So the man entered the house. Then (A)Laban unloaded the camels, and he gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

 33But when food was set before him to eat, he said, "I will not eat until I have told my business." And he said, "Speak on."

 34So he said, "I am (B)Abraham's servant.

 35"The LORD has greatly (C)blessed my master, so that he has become rich; and He has given him (D)flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and maids, and camels and donkeys.

 36"Now (E)Sarah my master's wife bore a son to my master in her old age, and (F)he has given him all that he has.

 37"(G)My master made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live;

 38but you shall go to my father's house and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.'

 39"(H)I said to my master, 'Suppose the woman does not follow me.'

 40"He said to me, '(I)The LORD, before whom I have (J)walked, will send (K)His angel with you to make your journey successful, and you will take a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father's house;

 41(L)then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my relatives; and if they do not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.'

 42"So (M)I came today to the spring, and said, 'O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, if now You will make my journey on which I go (N)successful;

 43behold, (O)I am standing by the spring, and may it be that the maiden who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, "(P)Please let me drink a little water from your jar";

 44and she will say to me, "You drink, and I will draw for your camels also"; let her be the woman whom the LORD has appointed for my master's son.'

 45"Before I had finished (Q)speaking in my heart, behold, (R)Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew, and (S)I said to her, 'Please let me drink.'

 46"She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder, and said, '(T)Drink, and I will water your camels also'; so I drank, and she watered the camels also.

 47"(U)Then I asked her, and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him'; and I put the (V)ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her wrists.

 48"And I (W)bowed low and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, (X)who had guided me in the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son.

 49"So now if you are going to [a](Y)deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, let me know, that I may turn to the right hand or the left."

 50Then Laban and Bethuel replied, "(Z)The matter comes from the LORD; (AA)so we cannot speak to you bad or good.

 51"Here is Rebekah before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has spoken."

 52When Abraham's servant heard their words, he (AB)bowed himself to the ground before the LORD.

 61Then Rebekah arose with her maids, and they mounted the camels and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and departed.

Isaac Marries Rebekah
 62Now Isaac had come from going to (A)Beer-lahai-roi; for he was living in (B)the Negev.

 63Isaac went out (C)to meditate in the field toward evening; and (D)he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, camels were coming.

 64Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac she dismounted from the camel.

 65She said to the servant, "Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?" And the servant said, "He is my master." Then she took her veil and covered herself.

 66The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done.

 67Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and (E)he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and (F)he loved her; thus Isaac was comforted after (G)his mother's death.

Second Reading: Mk. 8:1-21

Four Thousand Fed
 1In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, (A)Jesus called His disciples and said to them,

 2"(B)I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.

 3"If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance."

 4And His disciples answered Him, "Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?"

 5And He was asking them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven."

 6And He directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people.

 7They also had a few small fish; and (C)after He had blessed them, He ordered these to be served as well.

 8And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large (D)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces.

 9About four thousand were there; and He sent them away.

 10And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of (E)Dalmanutha.

 11(F)The Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, (G)seeking from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him.

 12(H)Sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, "Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, (I)no sign will be given to this generation."

 13Leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.

 14And they had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them.

 15And He was giving orders to them, saying, "(J)Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of (K)Herod."

 16They began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread.

 17And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? (L)Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a hardened heart?

 19when I broke (N)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many (O)baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?" They said to Him, "Twelve."

 20"When I broke (P)the seven for the four thousand, how many large (Q)baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?" And they said to Him, "Seven."

 21And He was saying to them, "(R)Do you not yet understand?"
