Saturday of Invocavit (Lent 1)

First Reading: Gen. 15:1-21

Abram Promised a Son
After these things (A)the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying,
         "(B)Do not fear, Abram,
         I am (C)a shield to you;
Your (D)reward shall be very great."

Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?"

And Abram said, "Since You have given no offspring to me, one (E)born in my house is my heir."

Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, "This man will not be your heir; (F)but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir."

And He took him outside and said, "Now look toward the heavens, and (G)count the stars, if you are able to count them " And He said to him, "(H)So shall your descendants be."

(I)Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.

And He said to him, "I am the LORD who brought you out of (J)Ur of the Chaldeans, to (K)give you this land to possess it."

He said, "O Lord GOD, (L)how may I know that I will possess it?"

So He said to him, "Bring Me a three year old heifer, and a three year old female goat, and a three year old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon."

Then he brought all these to Him and (M)cut them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but he (N)did not cut the birds.

The birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

Now when the sun was going down, (O)a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him.

God said to Abram, "Know for certain that (P)your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where (Q)they will be enslaved and oppressed (R)four hundred years.

"But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out (S)with many possessions.

"As for you, (T)you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age.

"Then in (U)the fourth generation they will return here, for (V)the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete."

It came about when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a flaming torch which (W)passed between these pieces.

On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying,
"(X)To your descendants I have given this land,
From (Y)the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:

(Z)the Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite

and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim

and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite."

Miracles and Healing

(A)When Jesus had crossed over again in (B)the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed (C)by the seashore.

(D)One of (E)the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet

and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and (F)lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live."

And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.

A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years,

and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse--

after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.

For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well."

Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her (G)affliction.

Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that (H)the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?"

And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"

And He looked around to see the woman who had done this.

But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.

And He said to her, "Daughter, (I)your faith has made you well; (J)go in peace and be healed of your (K)affliction."

While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the (L)synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?"

But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the (M)synagogue official, "(N)Do not be afraid any longer, only believe."

And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except (O)Peter and James and John the brother of James.

They came to the house of the (P)synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing.

And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep."

They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was.

Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, (Q)I say to you, get up!").

Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded.

And He (R)gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.
