Wednesday of Invocavit (Lent 1)

First Reading: Gen. 8:13-9:17

 13Now it came about in the (A)six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the water was dried up from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the surface of the ground was dried up.

 14In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.

 15Then God spoke to Noah, saying,

 16"Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons' wives with you.

 17"Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may (B)breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth."

 18So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him.

 19Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by their families from the ark.

 20Then Noah built (C)an altar to the LORD, and took of every (D)clean animal and of every clean bird and offered (E)burnt offerings on the altar.

 21The LORD (F)smelled the soothing aroma; and the LORD said to Himself, "I will never again (G)curse the ground on account of man, for (H)the intent of man's heart is evil from his youth; (I)and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
    22"While the earth remains,
         Seedtime and harvest,
         And cold and heat,
         And (J)summer and winter,
         And (K)day and night
         Shall not cease."

Covenant of the Rainbow
 1And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, "(L)Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.

 2"The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every beast of the earth and on every bird of the sky; with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, into your hand they are given.

 3"Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, (M)as I gave the green plant.

 4"Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, (N)its blood.

 5"Surely I will require (O)your lifeblood; (P)from every beast I will require it. And from every man, from every man's brother I will require the life of man.
    6"(Q)Whoever sheds man's blood,
         By man his blood shall be shed,
         For (R)in the image of God
         He made man.
    7"As for you, (S)be fruitful and multiply;
         Populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it."

 8Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying,

 9"Now behold, (T)I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your descendants after you;

 10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, even every beast of the earth.

 11"I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall (U)never again be cut off by the water of the flood, (V)neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth."

 12God said, "This is (W)the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations;

 13I set My (X)bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.

 14"It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud,

 15and (Y)I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and (Z)never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.

 16"When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the (AA)everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth."

 17And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth."

Second Reading: Mk. 4:1-20

Parable of the Sower and Soils
 1(A)He began to teach again (B)by the sea And such a very large crowd gathered to Him that (C)He got into a boat in the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land.

 2And He was teaching them many things in (D)parables, and was saying to them in His teaching,

 3"Listen to this! Behold, the sower went out to sow;

 4as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up.

 5"Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil.

 6"And after the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

 7"Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it yielded no crop.

 8"Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold."

 9And He was saying, "(E)He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

 10As soon as He was alone, His followers, along with the twelve, began asking Him about the parables.

 11And He was saying to them, "To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but (F)those who are outside get everything (G)in parables,

 12so that (H)WHILE SEEING, THEY MAY SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE, AND WHILE HEARING, THEY MAY HEAR AND NOT UNDERSTAND, OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT RETURN AND BE FORGIVEN."

Explanation
 13(I)And He said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How will you understand all the parables?

 14"The sower sows the word.

 15"These are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown; and when they hear, immediately (J)Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them.

 16"In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy;

 17and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away.

 18"And others are the ones on whom seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word,

 19but the worries of (K)the [a]world, and the (L)deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

 20"And those are the ones on whom seed was sown on the good soil; and they hear the word and accept it and (M)bear fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold."
