Monday of Invocavit (Lent 1)

First Reading: Gen. 6:1-7:5

The Corruption of Mankind
 1Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,

 2that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.

 3Then the LORD said, "(A)My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, (B)because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years."

 4The (C)Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

 5Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that (D)every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

 6(E)The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was (F)grieved in His heart.

 7The LORD said, "(G)I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for (H)I am sorry that I have made them."

 8But (I)Noah (J)found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

 9These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a (K)righteous man, (L)blameless in his time; Noah (M)walked with God.

 10Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

 11Now the earth was (N)corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was (O)filled with violence.

 12God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for (P)all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

 13Then God said to Noah, "(Q)The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.

 14"Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch.

 15"This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred [a]cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.

 16"You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.

 17"Behold, (R)I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.

 18"But I will establish (S)My covenant with you; and (T)you shall enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife, and your sons' wives with you.

 19"(U)And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.

 20"(V)Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.

 21"As for you, take for yourself some of all (W)food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them."

 22(X)Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.

The Flood
 1Then the LORD said to Noah, "Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be (Y)righteous before Me in this time.

 2"You shall take with you of every (Z)clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female;

 3also of the birds of the sky, by sevens, male and female, to keep offspring alive on the face of all the earth.

 4"For after (AA)seven more days, I will send rain on the earth (AB)forty days and forty nights; and I will blot out from the face of the land (AC)every living thing that I have made."

 5(AD)Noah did according to all that the LORD had commanded him.

Second Reading: Mk. 3:1-19

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
 1(A)He (B)entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered.

 2(C)They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, (D)so that they might accuse Him.

 3He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!"

 4And He said to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?" But they kept silent.

 5After (E)looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.

 6The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the (F)Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.

 7(G)Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and (H)a great multitude from Galilee followed; and also from Judea,

 8and from Jerusalem, and from (I)Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of (J)Tyre and Sidon, a great number of people heard of all that He was doing and came to Him.

 9(K)And He told His disciples that a boat should stand ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crowd Him;

 10for He had (L)healed many, with the result that all those who had (M)afflictions pressed around Him in order to (N)touch Him.

 11Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, "You are (O)the Son of God!"

 12And He (P)earnestly warned them not to tell who He was.

The Twelve Are Chosen
 13And He went up on (Q)the mountain and (R)summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him.

 14And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach,

 15and to have authority to cast out the demons.

 16And He appointed the twelve: (S)Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter),

 17and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, "Sons of Thunder");

 18and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot;

 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.
