Friday of Quinquagesima

First Reading: Gen. 2:4-25

(A)This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in (B)the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven.

(C)Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, (D)for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.

But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.

Then the LORD God formed man of (E)dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and (F)man became a living being.

The LORD God planted a (G)garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.

Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow (H)every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; (I)the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Now a (J)river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four rivers.

The name of the first is Pishon; it flows around the whole land of (K)Havilah, where there is gold.

The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there.

The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush.

The name of the third river is (L)Tigris; it flows east of Assyria And the fourth river is the (M)Euphrates.

Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.

The LORD God (N)commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely;

but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it (O)you will surely die."

Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; (P)I will make him a helper [a]suitable for him."

(Q)Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and (R)brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.

The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for [b]Adam there was not found (S)a helper suitable for him.

So the LORD God caused a (T)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.

The LORD God [c]fashioned into a woman (U)the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

The man said,
         "(V)This is now bone of my bones,
         And flesh of my flesh;
         She shall be called Woman,
         Because she was taken out of Man."

(W)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

(X)And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Second Reading: Mk. 1:29-45

Crowds Healed

(A)And immediately after they came (B)out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her.

And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she [a]waited on them.

(C)When evening came, (D)after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were (E)demon-possessed.

And the whole (F)city had gathered at the door.

And He (G)healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.

(H)In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and (I)was praying there.

Simon and his companions searched for Him;

they found Him, and said to Him, "Everyone is looking for You."

He said to them, "Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for."

(J)And He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons.

(K)And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and (L)falling on his knees before Him, and saying, "If You are willing, You can make me clean."

Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed."

Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away,

and He said to him, "(M)See that you say nothing to anyone; but (N)go, show yourself to the priest and (O)offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

But he went out and began to (P)proclaim it freely and to (Q)spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but [b]stayed out in unpopulated areas; and (R)they were coming to Him from everywhere.
