Perpetua and Felicitas, Martyrs

First Reading: Gen. 1:20-2:3

 20And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds[a] fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens." 21So(A) God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22And God blessed them, saying,(B) "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." 23And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

 24And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so. 25And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

 26Then God said,(C) "Let us make man[b] in our image,(D) after our likeness. And(E) let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
 27So God created man in his own image,
   in the image of God he created him;
   (F) male and female he created them.

 28And God blessed them. And God said to them,(G) "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth." 29And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit.(H) You shall have them for food. 30And(I) to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so. 31(J) And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

The Seventh Day, God Rests
 1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and(K) all the host of them. 2And(L) on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

 14(A) Now after John was arrested, Jesus(B) came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, (C) "The time is fulfilled, and(D) the kingdom of God is at hand;(E) repent and believe in the gospel."

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

 16(F) Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become(G) fishers of men." 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit

 21(H) And they went into Capernaum, and immediately(I) on the Sabbath(J) he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22And(K) they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24(L) "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us?(M) I know who you are—(N) the Holy One of God." 25But Jesus(O) rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" 26And the unclean spirit,(P) convulsing him and(Q) crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27And they were all(R) amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this?(S) A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." 28And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
