Collect (LSB)

Almighty and everlasting God, You despise nothing You have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create in us new and contrite hearts that, lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, we may receive from You full pardon and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament (LSB): Joel 2:12-19

    12"Yet even now," declares the LORD,
         "(A)Return to Me with all your heart,
         And with (B)fasting, weeping and mourning;
    13And (C)rend your heart and not (D)your garments "
         Now return to the LORD your God,
         For He is (E)gracious and compassionate,
         Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness
         And (F)relenting of evil.
    14Who knows (G)whether He will not turn and relent
         And leave a (H)blessing behind Him,
         Even (I)a grain offering and a drink offering
         For the LORD your God?
    15(J)Blow a trumpet in Zion,
         (K)Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly,
    16Gather the people, (L)sanctify the congregation,
         Assemble the elders,
         Gather the children and the nursing infants
         Let the (M)bridegroom come out of his room
         And the bride out of her bridal chamber.
    17Let the priests, the LORD'S ministers,
         Weep (N)between the porch and the altar,
         And let them say, "(O)Spare Your people, O LORD,
         And do not make Your inheritance a (P)reproach,
         A byword among the nations
         Why should they among the peoples say,
         '(Q)Where is their God?'"

Deliverance Promised
    18Then the LORD will be (R)zealous for His land
         And will have (S)pity on His people.
    19The LORD will answer and say to His people,
         "Behold, I am going to (T)send you grain, new wine and oil,
         And you will be satisfied in full with them;
         And I will (U)never again make you a reproach among the nations.

Old Testament: Jonah 3:1-10

Nineveh Repents

 1Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,

 2"Arise, go to (A)Nineveh the great city and (B)proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you."

 3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was [a]an (C)exceedingly great city, a three days' walk.

 4Then Jonah began to go through the city one day's walk; and he (D)cried out and said, "Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown."

 5Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a (E)fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.

 6When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, (F)covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ashes.

 7He issued a (G)proclamation and it said, "In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water.

 8"But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men (H)call on God earnestly that each may (I)turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands.

 9"(J)Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish."

 10When God saw their deeds, that they (K)turned from their wicked way, then (L)God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.

Epistle: 2 Cor. 5:20-6:10

 20Therefore, we are (A)ambassadors for Christ, (B)as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be (C)reconciled to God.

 21He made Him who (D)knew no sin to be (E)sin on our behalf, so that we might become the (F)righteousness of God in Him.

2 Corinthians 6

Their Ministry Commended
 1And (G)working together with Him, (H)we also urge you not to receive (I)the grace of God in vain--

 2for He says,
         "(J)AT THE ACCEPTABLE TIME I LISTENED TO YOU,
         AND ON THE DAY OF SALVATION I HELPED YOU."
         Behold, now is "THE ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold, now is "THE DAY OF SALVATION"--

 3(K)giving no cause for offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited,

 4but in everything (L)commending ourselves as (M)servants of God, (N)in much endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses,

 5in (O)beatings, in imprisonments, in (P)tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in (Q)hunger,

 6in purity, in (R)knowledge, in (S)patience, in kindness, in the (T)Holy Spirit, in (U)genuine love,

 7in (V)the word of truth, in (W)the power of God; by (X)the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left,

 8by glory and (Y)dishonor, by (Z)evil report and good report; regarded as (AA)deceivers and yet (AB)true;

 9as unknown yet well-known, as (AC)dying yet behold, (AD)we live; as punished yet not put to death,

 10as (AE)sorrowful yet always (AF)rejoicing, as (AG)poor yet making many rich, as (AH)having nothing yet possessing (AI)all things.

Gospel: Matt. 6:16-21

Fasting; The True Treasure; Wealth (Mammon)

 16"(A)Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting (B)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

 17"But you, when you fast, (C)anoint your head and wash your face

 18so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your (D)Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

 19"(E)Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

 20"But store up for yourselves (F)treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

 21for (G)where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

First Reading: Gen. 1:1-19

The Creation
 1(A)In the beginning (B)God (C)created the heavens and the earth.

 2The earth was [a](D)formless and void, and (E)darkness was over the surface of the deep, and (F)the Spirit of God (G)was [b]moving over the surface of the waters.

 3Then (H)God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

 4God saw that the light was (I)good; and God (J)separated the light from the darkness.

 5(K)God called the light day, and the darkness He called night And (L)there was evening and there was morning, one day.

 6Then God said, "Let there be an (M)expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."

 7God made the [c]expanse, and separated (N)the waters which were below the expanse from the waters (O)which were above the expanse; and it was so.

 8God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

 9Then God said, "(P)Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let (Q)the dry land appear"; and it was so.

 10God called the dry land earth, and the (R)gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that it was good.

 11Then God said, "Let the earth sprout (S)vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them"; and it was so.

 12The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

 13There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

 14Then God said, "Let there be (T)lights in the (U)expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for (V)signs and for (W)seasons and for days and years;

 15and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so.

 16God made the two great lights, the (X)greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made (Y)the stars also.

 17(Z)God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,

 18and to (AA)govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.

 19There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

Second Reading: Mk. 1:1-13

Preaching of John the Baptist
 1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, (A)the Son of God.

 2(B)As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
         "(C)BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,
         WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY;
    3(D)THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,
         'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,
         MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.'"

 4John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness [a](E)preaching a baptism of repentance for the (F)forgiveness of sins.

 5And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

 6John was clothed with camel's hair and wore (G)a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey.

 7And he was preaching, and saying, "After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals.

 8"I baptized you [b]with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

The Baptism of Jesus
 9(H)In those days Jesus (I)came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

 10Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;

 11and a voice came out of the heavens: "(J)You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased."

 12(K)Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness.

 13And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by (L)Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.
