First Reading: Job 36:1-21
Elihu Speaks of God's Dealings with Men
1Then Elihu continued and said, Cross references:
2"Wait for me a little, and I will show you
That there is yet more to be said in God's behalf.
3"I will fetch my knowledge from afar,
And I will ascribe (A)righteousness to my Maker.
4"For truly (B)my words are not false;
One who is (C)perfect in knowledge is with you.
5"Behold, God is mighty but does not (D)despise any;
He is (E)mighty in strength of understanding.
6"He does not (F)keep the wicked alive,
But gives justice to (G)the afflicted.
7"He does not (H)withdraw His eyes from the righteous;
But (I)with kings on the throne
He has seated them forever, and they are exalted.
8"And if they are bound in fetters,
And are caught in the cords of (J)affliction,
9Then He declares to them their work
And their transgressions, that they have (K)magnified themselves.
10"(L)He opens their ear to instruction,
And (M)commands that they return from evil.
11"If they hear and serve Him,
They will (N)end their days in prosperity
And their years in (O)pleasures.
12"But if they do not hear, they shall perish (P)by the sword
And they will (Q)die without knowledge.
13"But the godless in heart lay up anger;
They do not cry for help when He binds them.
14"They die in youth,
And their life perishes among the (R)cult prostitutes.
15"He delivers the afflicted in their (S)affliction,
And (T)opens their ear in time of oppression.
16"Then indeed, He (U)enticed you from the mouth of distress,
Instead of it, a broad place with no constraint;
And that which was set on your table was full of fatness.
17"But you were full of (V)judgment on the wicked;
Judgment and justice take hold of you.
18"Beware that (W)wrath does not entice you to scoffing;
And do not let the greatness of the (X)ransom turn you aside.
19"Will your riches keep you from distress,
Or all the forces of your strength?
20"Do not long for (Y)the night,
When people vanish in their place.
21"Be careful, do (Z)not turn to evil,
For you have preferred this to (AA)affliction.

Second Reading: John 11:38-57
38So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a (A)
cave, and a stone was lying against it.
39Jesus said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, "Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead (B)
40Jesus said to her, "(C)
Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"
41So they removed the (D)
stone Then Jesus (E)
raised His eyes, and said, "(F)
Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
42"I knew that You always hear Me; but (G)
because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that (H)
You sent Me."
43When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth."
44The man who had died came forth, (I)
bound hand and foot with wrappings, and (J)
his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
Therefore many of the Jews (L)
who came to Mary, and (M)
saw what He had done, believed in Him.
46But some of them went to the (N)
Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
the chief priests and the Pharisees (P)
convened a (Q)
council, and were saying, "What are we doing? For this man is performing many (R)
48"If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our (S)
place and our nation."
49But one of them, (T)
who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,
50nor do you take into account that (V)
it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."
51Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but (W)
being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
52and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also (X)
gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53So from that day on they (Y)
planned together to kill Him.
54Therefore Jesus (Z)
no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called (AA)
Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.
the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover (AC)
to purify themselves.
56So they (AD)
were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?"
the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him. Cross references:
