First Reading: Job 31:1-12; Job 31:33-40

Job Asserts His Integrity

    1"I have made a covenant with my (A)eyes;
         How then could I gaze at a virgin?
    2"And what is (B)the portion of God from above
         Or the heritage of the Almighty from on high?
    3"Is it not (C)calamity to the unjust
         And disaster to (D)those who work iniquity?
    4"Does He not (E)see my ways
         And (F)number all my steps?
    5"If I have (G)walked with falsehood,
         And my foot has hastened after deceit,
    6Let Him (H)weigh me with accurate scales,
         And let God know (I)my integrity.
    7"If my step has (J)turned from the way,
         Or my heart followed my eyes,
         Or if any (K)spot has stuck to my hands,
    8Let me (L)sow and another eat,
         And let my (M)crops be uprooted.
    9"If my heart has been (N)enticed by a woman,
         Or I have lurked at my neighbor's doorway,
    10May my wife (O)grind for another,
         And let (P)others kneel down over her.
    11"For that would be a (Q)lustful crime;
         Moreover, it would be (R)an iniquity punishable by judges.
    12"For it would be (S)fire that consumes to (T)Abaddon,
         And would (U)uproot all my increase.

    33"Have I (A)covered my transgressions like Adam,
         By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,
    34Because I (B)feared the great multitude,
         And the contempt of families terrified me,
         And kept silent and did not go out of doors?
    35"Oh that I had one to hear me!
         Behold, here is my signature;
         (C)Let the Almighty answer me!
         And the indictment which my (D)adversary has written,
    36Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,
         I would bind it to myself like a crown.
    37"I would declare to Him (E)the number of my steps;
         Like (F)a prince I would approach Him.
    38"If my (G)land cries out against me,
         And its furrows weep together;
    39If I have (H)eaten its fruit without money,
         Or have (I)caused its owners to lose their lives,
    40Let (J)briars grow instead of wheat,
         And stinkweed instead of barley."
         The words of Job are ended.

Second Reading: John 9:24-41

 24So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "(A)Give glory to God; we know that (B)this man is a sinner."

 25He then answered, "Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."

 26So they said to him, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"

 27He answered them, "(C)I told you already and you did not (D)listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?"

 28They reviled him and said, "You are His disciple, but (E)we are disciples of Moses.

 29"We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, (F)we do not know where He is from."

 30The man answered and said to them, "Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.

 31"We know that (G)God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.

 32"Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.

 33"(H)If this man were not from God, He could do nothing."

 34They answered him, "(I)You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?" So they (J)put him out.

Jesus Affirms His Deity
 35Jesus heard that they had (K)put him out, and finding him, He said, "Do you believe in the (L)Son of Man?"

 36He answered, "(M)Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?"

 37Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him, and (N)He is the one who is talking with you."

 38And he said, "Lord, I believe." And he (O)worshiped Him.

 39And Jesus said, "(P)For judgment I came into this world, so that (Q)those who do not see may see, and that (R)those who see may become blind."

 40Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, "(S)We are not blind too, are we?"

 41Jesus said to them, "(T)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, '(U)We see,' your sin remains.
