1Then Job answered and said:
2(A) "Keep listening to my words,
and let this be your comfort. 3Bear with me, and I will speak,
and after I have spoken,(B) mock on. 4As for me, is my(C) complaint against man?
Why should I not be impatient? 5Look at me and be appalled,
and(D) lay your hand over your mouth. 6When I remember, I am dismayed,
and shuddering seizes my flesh. 7(E) Why do the wicked live,
reach old age, and grow mighty in power? 8Their(F) offspring are established in their presence,
and their descendants before their eyes. 9Their houses are(G) safe from fear,
and(H) no rod of God is upon them. 10Their bull breeds without fail;
their cow calves and(I) does not miscarry. 11They send out their(J) little boys like a flock,
and their children dance. 12They sing to(K) the tambourine and(L) the lyre
and rejoice to the sound of the pipe. 13They(M) spend their days in prosperity,
and in(N) peace they go down to(O) Sheol. 14They say to God,(P) 'Depart from us!
We do not desire the knowledge of your ways. 15(Q) What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
And what(R) profit do we get if we pray to him?' 16Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand?
(S) The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
39They answered him,(A) "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, (B) "If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40but now(C) you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth(D) that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41You are doing the works your father did." They said to him,(E) "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have(F) one Father—even God." 42Jesus said to them, (G) "If God were your Father, you would love me, for(H) I came from God and(I) I am here.(J) I came not of my own accord, but(K) he sent me. 43(L) Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot(M) bear to hear my word. 44(N) You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires.(O) He was a murderer from the beginning, and(P) has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him.(Q) When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47(R) Whoever is of God hears the words of God.(S) The reason why you do not hear them is that(T) you are not of God."
48The Jews answered him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and(U) have a demon?" 49Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon, but(V) I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50Yet(W) I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51Truly, truly,(X) I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never(Y) see death." 52The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon!(Z) Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet(AA) you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never(AB) taste death.' 53(AC) Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?" 54Jesus answered, (AD) "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing.(AE) It is my Father who glorifies me,(AF) of whom you say, 'He is our God.'[a] 55But(AG) you have not known him.(AH) I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be(AI) a liar(AJ) like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56(AK) Your father Abraham(AL) rejoiced(AM) that he would see my day.(AN) He saw it and was glad." 57So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"[b] 58Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was,(AO) I am." 59So(AP) they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.Footnotes:John 8:54 Some manuscripts your God John 8:57 Some manuscripts has Abraham seen you?
