Zophar Says, "The Triumph of the Wicked Is Short"

 1Then Zophar the Naamathite answered,
    2"Therefore my disquieting thoughts make me respond,
         Even because of my inward agitation.
    3"I listened to (A)the reproof which insults me,
         And the spirit of my understanding makes me answer.
    4"Do you know this from (B)of old,
         From the establishment of man on earth,
    5That the (C)triumphing of the wicked is short,
         And (D)the joy of the godless momentary?
    6"Though his loftiness (E)reaches the heavens,
         And his head touches the clouds,
    7He (F)perishes forever like his refuse;
         Those who have seen him (G)will say, 'Where is he?'
    8"He flies away like a (H)dream, and they cannot find him;
         Even like a vision of the night he is (I)chased away.
    9"The (J)eye which saw him sees him no longer,
         And (K)his place no longer beholds him.
    10"His (L)sons favor the poor,
         And his hands (M)give back his wealth.
    11"His (N)bones are full of his youthful vigor,
         But it lies down with him in the dust.
    12"Though (O)evil is sweet in his mouth
         And he hides it under his tongue,
    13Though he desires it and will not let it go,
         But holds it (P)in his mouth,
    14Yet his food in his stomach is changed
         To the venom of cobras within him.
    15"He swallows riches,
         But will (Q)vomit them up;
         God will expel them from his belly.
    16"He sucks (R)the poison of cobras;
         The viper's tongue slays him.
    17"He does not look at (S)the streams,
         The rivers flowing with honey and curds.
    18"He (T)returns what he has attained
         And cannot swallow it;
         As to the riches of his trading,
         He cannot even enjoy them.
    19"For he has (U)oppressed and forsaken the poor;
         He has seized a house which he has not built.
    20"Because he knew no quiet within him,
         He does (V)not retain anything he desires.
    21"Nothing remains for him to devour,
         Therefore (W)his prosperity does not endure.
    22"In the fullness of his plenty he will be cramped;
         The (X)hand of everyone who suffers will come against him.
    23"When he (Y)fills his belly,
         God will send His fierce anger on him
         And will (Z)rain it on him while he is eating.

Second Reading · John 8:21-38

 21Then He said again to them, "I go away, and (A)you will seek Me, and (B)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come."

 22So (C)the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, '(D)Where I am going, you cannot come'?"

 23And He was saying to them, "(E)You are from below, I am from above; (F)you are of this world, (G)I am not of this world.

 24"Therefore I said to you that you (H)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that (I)I am He, (J)you will die in your sins."

 25So they were saying to Him, "Who are You?" Jesus said to them, "What have I been saying to you from the beginning?

 26"I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but (K)He who sent Me is true; and (L)the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world."

 27They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father.

 28So Jesus said, "When you (M)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that (N)I am He, and (O)I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.

 29"And He who sent Me is with Me; (P)He has not left Me alone, for (Q)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him."

 30As He spoke these things, (R)many came to believe in Him.

The Truth Will Make You Free
 31So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "(S)If you continue in My word, then you are truly (T)disciples of Mine;

 32and (U)you will know the truth, and (V)the truth will make you free."

 33They answered Him, "(W)We are Abraham's descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free'?"

 34Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, (X)everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.

 35"(Y)The slave does not remain in the house forever; (Z)the son does remain forever.

 36"So if the Son (AA)makes you free, you will be free indeed.

 37"I know that you are (AB)Abraham's descendants; yet (AC)you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.

 38"I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (AD)your father."
