St. Matthias the Apostle

Collect (LSB)

Almighty God, You chose Your servant Matthias to be numbered among the Twelve. Grant that Your Church, ever preserved from false teachers, may be taught and guided by faithful and true pastors; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament (LSB): Isaiah 66:1-2

The Humble and Contrite in Spirit

 1(A) Thus says the LORD:(B) "Heaven is my throne,
   and the earth is my footstool;what is the house that you would build for me,
   and what is the place of my rest? 2(C) All these things my hand has made,
   and so all these things came to be,
         declares the LORD.(D) But this is the one to whom I will look:
   he who is humble and contrite in spirit
   and trembles at my word.

Epistle: Acts 1:15-26

 15In those days Peter stood up among(A) the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16"Brothers,(B) the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas,(C) who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17For(D) he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in(E) this ministry." 18(Now this man(F) acquired a field with(G) the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong[a] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called(H) in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20"For it is written in the Book of Psalms,
   (I) "'May his camp become desolate,
   and let there be no one to dwell in it';

   and
   (J) "'Let another take his office.'

 21So one of the men who have accompanied us during(K) all the time that the Lord Jesus(L) went in and out among us, 22(M) beginning from the baptism of John until the day when(N) he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us(O) a witness to his resurrection." 23And they put forward two, Joseph called(P) Barsabbas, who was also called(Q) Justus, and(R) Matthias. 24And(S) they prayed and said, "You, Lord,(T) who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25to take the place in(U) this ministry and(V) apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place." 26And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Gospel: Matt. 11:25-30

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

 25(A) At that time Jesus declared, "I thank you, Father,(B) Lord of heaven and earth, that(C) you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and(D) revealed them to little children; 26yes, Father, for such was your(E) gracious will.[a] 27(F) All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son(G) except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone(H) to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28(I) Come to(J) me, all who labor and are(K) heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and(L) learn from me, for I am(M) gentle and lowly in heart, and(N) you will find rest for your souls. 30For(O) my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Job Replies: My Redeemer Lives

 1Then Job answered and said:
 2"How long will you torment me
   and break me in pieces with words? 3These(A) ten times you have cast reproach upon me;
   are you not ashamed to wrong me? 4And even if it be true that I have erred,
   my error remains with myself. 5If indeed you(B) magnify yourselves against me
   and make my disgrace an argument against me, 6know then that God has(C) put me in the wrong
   and closed his net about me. 7Behold, I(D) cry out, 'Violence!' but I am not answered;
   I call for help, but there is no justice. 8He has(E) walled up my way, so that I cannot pass,
   and he has set darkness upon my paths. 9He has(F) stripped from me my glory
   and taken the(G) crown from my head. 10He breaks me down on every side, and I(H) am gone,
   and my hope has he pulled up like a tree. 11He has kindled his wrath against me
   and(I) counts me as his adversary. 12His(J) troops come on together;
   they have(K) cast up their siege ramp[a] against me
   and encamp around my tent.

21Have mercy on me, have mercy on me, O you my friends,
   for the hand of God has(A) touched me! 22Why do you, like God,(B) pursue me?
   Why are you not satisfied with my flesh?

 23"Oh that my words were written!
   Oh that they were(C) inscribed in a book! 24Oh that with an iron(D) pen and lead
   they were engraved in the rock forever! 25For I(E) know that my(F) Redeemer lives,
   and at the last he will stand upon the(G) earth.[a] 26And after my skin has been thus destroyed,
   yet in[b] my flesh I shall(H) see God, 27whom I shall see for myself,
   and my eyes shall behold, and not(I) another.
   My heart(J) faints within me!

Second Reading: John 8:1-20

 1but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2(A) Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and(B) he sat down and taught them. 3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5Now(C) in the Law Moses commanded us(D) to stone such women. So what do you say?" 6This they said(E) to test him,(F) that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, (G) "Let him who is without sin among you(H) be the first to throw a stone at her." 8And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10Jesus stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, (I) "Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on(J) sin no more."]]

I Am the Light of the World
 12(K) Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, (L) "I am the light of the world. Whoever(M) follows me will not(N) walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." 13So the Pharisees said to him,(O) "You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true." 14Jesus answered, "Even if I do bear witness about myself,(P) my testimony is true, for I know(Q) where I came from and(R) where I am going, but(S) you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15(T) You judge according to the flesh;(U) I judge no one. 16Yet even if I do judge,(V) my judgment is true, for(W) it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father[a] who sent me. 17(X) In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18I am the one who bears witness about myself, and(Y) the Father who sent me bears witness about me." 19They said to him therefore, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, (Z) "You know neither me nor my Father.(AA) If you knew me, you would know my Father also." 20These words he spoke in(AB) the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but(AC) no one arrested him, because(AD) his hour had not yet come.
