Martin Luther, Doctor and Confessor

First Reading: Job 13:13-28

Job Is Sure He Will Be Vindicated

    13"(A)Be silent before me so that I may speak;
         Then let come on me what may.
    14"Why should I take my flesh in my teeth
         And (B)put my life in my hands?
    15"(C)Though He slay me,
         I will hope in Him
         Nevertheless I (D)will argue my ways before Him.
    16"This also will be my (E)salvation,
         For (F)a godless man may not come before His presence.
    17"Listen carefully to my speech,
         And let my declaration fill your ears.
    18"Behold now, I have (G)prepared my case;
         I know that (H)I will be vindicated.
    19"(I)Who will contend with me?
         For then I would be silent and (J)die.
    20"Only two things do not do to me,
         Then I will not hide from Your face:
    21(K)Remove Your hand from me,
         And let not the dread of You terrify me.
    22"Then call, and (L)I will answer;
         Or let me speak, then reply to me.
    23"(M)How many are my iniquities and sins?
         Make known to me my rebellion and my sin.
    24"Why do You (N)hide Your face
         And consider me (O)Your enemy?
    25"Will You cause a (P)driven leaf to tremble?
         Or will You pursue the dry (Q)chaff?
    26"For You write (R)bitter things against me
         And (S)make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth.
    27"You (T)put my feet in the stocks
         And watch all my paths;
         You set a limit for the soles of my feet,
    28While I am decaying like a (U)rotten thing,
         Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

Second Reading: John 6:22-40

 22The next day (A)the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus (B)had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone.

 23There came other small boats from (C)Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the (D)Lord (E)had given thanks.

 24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and (F)came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.

 25When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "(G)Rabbi, when did You get here?"

Words to the People
 26Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you (H)seek Me, not because you saw (I)signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.

 27"Do not (J)work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to (K)eternal life, which (L)the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, (M)has set His seal."

 28Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?"

 29Jesus answered and said to them, "This is (N)the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He (O)has sent."

 30So they said to Him, "(P)What then do You do for a (Q)sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform?

 31"(R)Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, '(S)HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.'"

 32Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven.

 33"For the bread of God is [a]that which (T)comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world."

 34Then they said to Him, "Lord, always (U)give us this bread."

 35Jesus said to them, "(V)I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me (W)will never thirst.

 36"But (X)I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.

 37"(Y)All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.

 38"For (Z)I have come down from heaven, (AA)not to do My own will, but (AB)the will of Him who (AC)sent Me.

 39"This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of (AD)all that He has given Me I (AE)lose nothing, but (AF)raise it up on the last day.

 40"For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who (AG)beholds the Son and (AH)believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will (AI)raise him up on the last day."
