Martin Luther, Doctor and Confessor

First Reading: Job 13:13-28

 13"Let me have silence, and I will speak,
   and let come on me what may. 14Why should I take my flesh in my teeth
   and(A) put my life in my hand? 15(B) Though he slay me, I will(C) hope in him;[a]
   yet I will(D) argue my ways to his face. 16This will be my salvation,
   that the godless shall not come before him. 17(E) Keep listening to my words,
   and let my declaration be in your ears. 18Behold, I have(F) prepared my case;
   I know that I shall be in the right. 19(G) Who is there who will contend with me?
   For then I would be silent and die. 20Only grant me two things,
   then I will not(H) hide myself from your face: 21(I) withdraw your hand far from me,
   and let not(J) dread of you terrify me. 22(K) Then call, and I will answer;
   or let me speak, and you reply to me. 23How many are my iniquities and my sins?
   (L) Make me know my transgression and my sin. 24Why(M) do you hide your face
   and(N) count me as your enemy? 25Will you frighten(O) a driven leaf
   and pursue dry(P) chaff? 26For you(Q) write bitter things against me
   and make me inherit(R) the iniquities of my youth. 27You put my feet in(S) the stocks
   and(T) watch all my paths;
   you set a limit for[b] the soles of my feet. 28Man[c] wastes away like(U) a rotten thing,
   like a garment that is(V) moth-eaten.

Second Reading: John 6:22-40

I Am the Bread of Life

 22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only(A) one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord(B) had given thanks. 24(C) So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and(D) went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

 25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him,(E) "Rabbi, when did you come here?" 26Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you,(F) you are seeking me, not because you saw(G) signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27(H) Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for(I) the food that endures to eternal life, which(J) the Son of Man will give to you. For on(K) him God the Father has(L) set his seal." 28Then they said to him, "What must we do, to be doing(M) the works of God?" 29Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God,(N) that you believe in him whom(O) he has sent." 30So they said to him,(P) "Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31(Q) Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written,(R) 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" 32Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is(S) he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." 34They said to him,(T) "Sir, give us this bread always."

 35Jesus said to them, (U) "I am the bread of life;(V) whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37(W) All that(X) the Father gives me will come to me, and(Y) whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38For(Z) I have come down from heaven, not to do(AA) my own will but(AB) the will of him who sent me. 39And(AC) this is the will of him who sent me,(AD) that I should lose nothing of(AE) all that he has given me, but(AF) raise it up on the last day. 40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who(AG) looks on the Son and(AH) believes in him(AI) should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."
