Philip Melanchthon (birth), Confessor

First Reading: Job 12:1-6; Job 12:12-25

Job Chides His Accusers

 1Then Job responded,
    2"Truly then (A)you are the people,
         And with you wisdom will die!
    3"But (B)I have intelligence as well as you;
         I am not inferior to you.
         And who does not know such things as these?
    4"I am a (C)joke to my friends,
         The one who called on God and He answered him;
         The just and (D)blameless man is a joke.
    5"He who is at ease holds calamity in contempt,
         As prepared for those whose feet slip.
    6"The (E)tents of the destroyers prosper,
         And those who provoke God (F)are secure,
         Whom God brings (G)into their power.

    12"Wisdom is with (A)aged men,
         With long life is understanding.

Job Speaks of the Power of God

    13"With Him are (B)wisdom and (C)might;
         To Him belong counsel and (D)understanding.
    14"Behold, He (E)tears down, and it cannot be rebuilt;
         He (F)imprisons a man, and there can be no release.
    15"Behold, He (G)restrains the waters, and they dry up;
         And He (H)sends them out, and they inundate the earth.
    16"With Him are strength and sound wisdom,
         The (I)misled and the misleader belong to Him.
    17"He makes (J)counselors walk barefoot
         And makes fools of (K)judges.
    18"He (L)loosens the bond of kings
         And binds their loins with a girdle.
    19"He makes priests walk barefoot
         And overthrows (M)the secure ones.
    20"He deprives the trusted ones of speech
         And (N)takes away the discernment of the elders.
    21"He (O)pours contempt on nobles
         And (P)loosens the belt of the strong.
    22"He (Q)reveals mysteries from the darkness
         And brings the deep darkness into light.
    23"He (R)makes the nations great, then destroys them;
         He enlarges the nations, then leads them away.
    24"He (S)deprives of intelligence the chiefs of the earth's people
         And makes them wander in a pathless waste.
    25"They (T)grope in darkness with no light,
         And He makes them (U)stagger like a drunken man.

Second Reading: John 5:30-47

 30"(A)I can do nothing on My own initiative As I hear, I judge; and (B)My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but (C)the will of Him who sent Me.

 31"(D)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true.

 32"There is (E)another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Witness of John
 33"You have sent to John, and he (F)has testified to the truth.

 34"But (G)the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

 35"He was (H)the lamp that was burning and was shining and you (I)were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

Witness of Works
 36"But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (J)the works which the Father has given Me (K)to accomplish--the very works that I do--testify about Me, that the Father (L)has sent Me.
Witness of the Father
 37"And the Father who sent Me, (M)He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.

 38"You do not have (N)His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He (O)sent.

Witness of the Scripture
 39"[a](P)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is (Q)these that testify about Me;

 40and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.

 41"(R)I do not receive glory from men;

 42but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

 43"I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; (S)if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

 44"How can you believe, when you (T)receive glory from one another and you do not seek (U)the glory that is from (V)the one and only God?

 45"Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (W)Moses, in whom you have set your hope.

 46"For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for (X)he wrote about Me.

 47"But (Y)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"
