Tuesday of Transfiguration

First Reading: Job 8:1-22

Bildad Says God Rewards the Good

 1Then Bildad the Shuhite answered,
    2"How long will you say these things,
         And the (A)words of your mouth be a mighty wind?
    3"Does (B)God pervert justice?
         Or does the Almighty pervert what is right?
    4"(C)If your sons sinned against Him,
         Then He delivered them into the power of their transgression.
    5"If you would (D)seek God
         And implore the compassion of the Almighty,
    6If you are pure and upright,
         Surely now (E)He would rouse Himself for you
         And restore your righteous (F)estate.
    7"Though your beginning was insignificant,
         Yet your (G)end will increase greatly.
    8"Please (H)inquire of past generations,
         And consider the things searched out by their fathers.
    9"For we are only of yesterday and know nothing,
         Because (I)our days on earth are as a shadow.
    10"Will they not teach you and tell you,
         And bring forth words from their minds?
    11"Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh?
         Can the rushes grow without water?
    12"While it is still green and not cut down,
         Yet it withers before any other plant.
    13"So are the paths of (J)all who forget God;
         And the (K)hope of the godless will perish,
    14Whose confidence is fragile,
         And whose trust a (L)spider's web.
    15"He trusts in his (M)house, but it does not stand;
         He holds fast to it, but it does not endure.
    16"He (N)thrives before the sun,
         And his (O)shoots spread out over his garden.
    17"His roots wrap around a rock pile,
         He grasps a house of stones.
    18"If he is removed from (P)his place,
         Then it will deny him, saying, '(Q)I never saw you.'
    19"Behold, (R)this is the joy of His way;
         And out of the dust others will spring.
    20"Lo, (S)God will not reject a man of integrity,
         Nor (T)will He support the evildoers.
    21"He will yet fill (U)your mouth with laughter
         And your lips with shouting.
    22"Those who hate you will be (V)clothed with shame,
         And the (W)tent of the wicked will be no longer."

Second Reading: John 4:27-45

 27At this point His (A)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why do You speak with her?"

 28So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men,

 29"Come, see a man (B)who told me all the things that I have done; (C)this is not the Christ, is it?"

 30They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.

 31Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, "(D)Rabbi, eat."

 32But He said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about."

 33So the (E)disciples were saying to one another, "No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?"

 34Jesus said to them, "My food is to (F)do the will of Him who sent Me and to (G)accomplish His work.

 35"Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white (H)for harvest.

 36"Already he who reaps is receiving (I)wages and is gathering (J)fruit for (K)life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.

 37"For in this case the saying is true, '(L)One sows and another reaps.'

 38"I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor."

The Samaritans
 39From (M)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "(N)He told me all the things that I have done."

 40So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.

 41Many more believed because of His word;

 42and they were saying to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed (O)the Savior of the world."

 43After (P)the two days He went forth from there into Galilee.

 44For Jesus Himself testified that (Q)a prophet has no honor in his own country.

 45So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, (R)having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.
