1"Is not man (A)forced to labor on earth,
And are not his days like the days of (B)a hired man?
2"As a slave who pants for the shade,
And as a hired man who eagerly waits for his wages,
3So am I allotted months of vanity,
And (C)nights of trouble are appointed me.
4"When I (D)lie down I say,
'When shall I arise?'
But the night continues,
And I am continually tossing until dawn.
5"My (E)flesh is clothed with worms and a crust of dirt,
My skin hardens and runs.
6"My days are (F)swifter than a weaver's shuttle,
And come to an end (G)without hope.
7"Remember that my life (H)is but breath;
My eye will (I)not again see good.
8"The (J)eye of him who sees me will behold me no longer;
Your eyes will be on me, but (K)I will not be.
9"When a (L)cloud vanishes, it is gone,
So (M)he who goes down to (N)Sheol does not come up.
10"He will not return again to his house,
Nor will (O)his place know him anymore.
11"Therefore (P)I will not restrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit,
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
12"Am I the sea, or (Q)the sea monster,
That You set a guard over me?
13"If I say, '(R)My bed will comfort me,
My couch will ease my complaint,'
14Then You frighten me with dreams
And terrify me by visions;
15So that my soul would choose suffocation,
Death rather than my pains.
16"I (S)waste away; I will not live forever
Leave me alone, (T)for my days are but a breath.
17"(U)What is man that You magnify him,
And that You are concerned about him,
18That (V)You examine him every morning
And try him every moment?
19"(W)Will You never turn Your gaze away from me,
Nor let me alone until I swallow my spittle?
20"(X)Have I sinned? What have I done to You,
O (Y)watcher of men?
Why have You set me as Your target,
So that I am a burden to myself?
21"Why then (Z)do You not pardon my transgression
And take away my iniquity?
For now I will (AA)lie down in the dust;
And You will seek me, (AB)but I will not be."
7There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."8For His (A)disciples had gone away into (B)the city to buy food. 9Therefore the (C)Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?" (For (D)Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (E)living water." 11She said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that (F)living water? 12"You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who (G)gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?" 13Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him (H)shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to (I)eternal life." 15The woman said to Him, "Sir, (J)give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw." 16He said to her, "Go, call your husband and come here." 17The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have correctly said, 'I have no husband'; 18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly." 19The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are (K)a prophet. 20"(L)Our fathers worshiped in (M)this mountain, and you people say that (N)in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." 21Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, (O)an hour is coming when (P)neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22"(Q)You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for (R)salvation is from the Jews. 23"But (S)an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father (T)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship (U)in spirit and truth." 25The woman said to Him, "I know that (V)Messiah is coming ((W)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us." 26Jesus said to her, "(X)I who speak to you am He."
