Monday of Transfiguration

First Reading: Job 7:1-21

Job Continues: My Life Has No Hope

 1"Has not man(A) a hard service on earth,
   and are not his(B) days like the days of a hired hand? 2Like a slave who longs for(C) the shadow,
   and like(D) a hired hand who looks for his(E) wages, 3so I am allotted months of(F) emptiness,
   (G) and nights of misery are apportioned to me. 4(H) When I lie down I say, 'When shall I arise?'
   But the night is long,
   and I am full of tossing till the dawn. 5My flesh is clothed with(I) worms and(J) dirt;
   my skin hardens, then(K) breaks out afresh. 6My days are(L) swifter than(M) a weaver’s shuttle
   and come to their end without hope.

 7"Remember that my life is a(N) breath;
   my eye will never again see good. 8(O) The eye of him who sees me will behold me no more;
   while your eyes are on me,(P) I shall be gone. 9As(Q) the cloud fades and vanishes,
   so he who(R) goes down to Sheol does not come up; 10he(S) returns no more to his house,
   nor does his(T) place know him anymore.

 11"Therefore I will not(U) restrain my mouth;
   I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;
   I will(V) complain in(W) the bitterness of my soul. 12Am I the sea, or(X) a sea monster,
   that you set a guard over me? 13(Y) When I say, 'My bed will comfort me,
   my couch will ease my complaint,' 14then you scare me with dreams
   and terrify me with visions, 15so that I would choose strangling
   and death rather than my(Z) bones. 16I(AA) loathe my life; I would not live forever.
   (AB) Leave me alone, for my days are(AC) a breath. 17(AD) What is man, that you make so much of him,
   and that you set your heart on him, 18(AE) visit him every morning
   and(AF) test him every moment? 19How long will you not(AG) look away from me,
   nor leave me alone till I swallow my spit? 20If I sin, what do I do to you, you watcher of mankind?
   Why have you made me(AH) your mark?
   Why have I become a burden to you? 21Why do you not pardon my transgression
   and take away my iniquity?For now I shall lie in(AI) the earth;
   you will(AJ) seek me,(AK) but I shall not be."

Second Reading: John 4:7-26

 7A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, (A) "Give me a drink." 8(For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?" ((B) For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you(C) living water." 11The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12(D) Are you greater than our father Jacob?(E) He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock." 13Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14but(F) whoever drinks of the water that I will give him(G) will never be thirsty again.[a] The water that I will give him will become(H) in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." 15The woman said to him, "Sir,(I) give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water."

 16Jesus said to her, "Go,(J) call your husband, and come here." 17The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; 18for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true." 19The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that(K) you are(L) a prophet. 20(M) Our fathers worshiped on(N) this mountain, but you say that(O) in Jerusalem is(P) the place where people ought to worship." 21Jesus said to her, (Q) "Woman, believe me,(R) the hour is coming when(S) neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22(T) You worship what you do not know;(U) we worship what we know, for(V) salvation is from the Jews. 23But(W) the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father(X) in spirit and(Y) truth, for the Father(Z) is seeking such people to worship him. 24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." 25The woman said to him, "I know that(AA) Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes,(AB) he will tell us all things." 26Jesus said to her, (AC) "I who speak to you am he."
