Transfiguration

Explanation of the Week

The Lord appeared to Moses in the light of the burning bush. (Ex 3:1-14) Later Moses' face would shine with the light of God's glory when he came down from Mount Sinai. (Ex 34:29-35) Now Moses and Elijah appear with Him who is the Light of Light Himself on the Mount of Transfiguration. (Mt 17:1-9) Jesus' glory as God shines with brilliant splendor in and through His human nature. By this epiphany, our Lord confirmed the prophetic word (2 Pet 1:16-21), revealing that He is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. He manifested His majesty as the eternal Son of the Father. And He wonderfully foreshowed our adoption as sons. (Collect) For in this event we who have been baptized into Christ's body are given a glimpse of the glory that we will share with Him in the resurrection on the Last Day.

Introit

The lightnings lit | up the world;*

How lovely is Your tabernacle, O | LORD of hosts!*
     My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts | of the LORD.

     and look upon the face of You're A- | nointed

Collect (LSB)

O God, in the glorious Transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah, and in the voice that came from the bright cloud You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King of His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Collect (TLH)

O God, who in the glorious transfiguration of Thine only-begotten Son has confirmed the mysteries of faith by the testimony of the fathers, and who in the voice that came from the bright cloud, didst in a wonderful manner foreshow the adoption of sons, mercifully vouchsafe to make us coheirs with the King of His glory and bring us to the enjoyment of the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Collecta Latina

Old Testament (LSB): Ex. 34:29-35

The Shining Face of Moses

 29When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with(A) the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face(B) shone because he had been talking with God.[a] 30Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face(C) shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he(D) commanded them all that the LORD had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a(E) veil over his face.

 34Whenever Moses(F) went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was(G) shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Old Testament: Isaiah 61:10-11

 10(A) I will greatly rejoice in the LORD;
   my soul shall exult in my God,(B) for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
   he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,as a bridegroom decks himself(C) like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
   (D) and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
   and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,so the Lord GOD will cause(E) righteousness and praise
   to sprout up before all the nations.

You are fairer than the | sons of men;*
     grace is poured up- | on Your lips.

Christ’s Glory and the Prophetic Word

 16For we did not follow(A) cleverly devised(B) myths when we made known to you(C) the power and(D) coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but(E) we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory,(F) "This is my beloved Son,[a] with whom I am well pleased," 18we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on(G) the holy mountain. 19And(H) we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention(I) as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until(J) the day(K) dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21For(L) no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God(M) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

The Transfiguration

 1(A) And after six days Jesus took with him(B) Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2And he was(C) transfigured before them, and(D) his face shone like the sun, and(E) his clothes became white as light. 3And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for(F) Elijah." 5He was still speaking when, behold,(G) a bright cloud overshadowed them, and(H) a voice from the cloud said,(I) "This is my beloved Son,[a] with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." 6When(J) the disciples heard this,(K) they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7But Jesus came and(L) touched them, saying, "Rise, and(M) have no fear." 8And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

 9(N) And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, (O) "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead."

Glorious Things of You Are Spoken

A Psalm of(A) the Sons of Korah. A Song.

 1On(B) the holy mount(C) stands the city he founded;
 2the LORD(D) loves the gates of Zion
   more than all the dwelling places of Jacob. 3(E) Glorious things of you are spoken,
   O(F) city of God.

 4Among those who(G) know me I mention(H) Rahab and Babylon;
   behold, Philistia and Tyre, with(I) Cush[a]
   "This one was born there," they say. 5And of Zion it shall be said,
   "This one and that one were born in her";
   for the Most High himself will(J) establish her. 6The LORD records as he(K) registers the peoples,
   "This one was born there."

First Reading: Job 6:14-30

 14"He who(A) withholds[a] kindness from a(B) friend
   forsakes the fear of the Almighty. 15My(C) brothers are(D) treacherous as a torrent-bed,
   as torrential(E) streams that pass away, 16which are dark with ice,
   and where the snow hides itself. 17When they melt, they disappear;
   when it is hot, they vanish from their place. 18The caravans turn aside from their course;
   they go up into(F) the waste and perish. 19The caravans of(G) Tema look,
   the travelers of(H) Sheba hope. 20They are(I) ashamed because they were confident;
   they come there and are disappointed. 21For you have now become nothing;
   you see my calamity and are afraid. 22Have I said, 'Make me a gift'?
   Or, 'From your wealth offer a bribe for me'? 23Or, 'Deliver me from the adversary’s hand'?
   Or, 'Redeem me from the hand of(J) the ruthless'?

 24"Teach me, and I will be silent;
   make me understand how I have gone astray. 25How forceful are upright words!
   But what does reproof from you reprove? 26Do you think that you can reprove words,
   when the speech of a despairing man is(K) wind? 27You would even(L) cast lots over the fatherless,
   and bargain over your friend.

 28"But now, be pleased to look at me,
   for I will not lie to your face. 29(M) Please turn; let no injustice be done.
   Turn now; my vindication is at stake. 30Is there any injustice on my tongue?
   Cannot my palate discern the cause of calamity?

How Majestic Is Your Name

To the choirmaster: according to The(A) Gittith.[a] A Psalm of David.

 1O LORD, our Lord,
   how majestic is your(B) name in all the earth!You have set your(C) glory above the heavens.
 2(D) Out of the mouth of babies and infants,you have established(E) strength because of your foes,
   to still(F) the enemy and the avenger.

 3When I(G) look at your heavens, the work of your(H) fingers,
   the moon and the stars,(I) which you have set in place, 4(J) what is man that you are(K) mindful of him,
   and(L) the son of man that you(M) care for him?

 5Yet you have made him a little lower than(N) the heavenly beings[b]
   and crowned him with(O) glory and honor. 6You have given him(P) dominion over the works of your hands;
   (Q) you have put all things under his feet, 7all sheep and oxen,
   and also the beasts of the field, 8the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
   whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

 9O LORD, our Lord,
   how majestic is your name in all the earth!

John the Baptist Exalts Christ

 22After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and(A) was baptizing. 23John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24(for(B) John had not yet been put in prison).

 25Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over(C) purification. 26And they came to John and said to him,(D) "Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan,(E) to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and(F) all are going to him." 27John answered,(G) "A person cannot receive even one thing(H) unless it is given him(I) from heaven. 28You yourselves bear me witness, that I said,(J) 'I am not the Christ, but(K) I have been sent before him.' 29(L) The one who has the bride is the bridegroom.(M) The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him,(N) rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30(O) He must increase, but I must decrease."[a]

 31(P) He who comes from above(Q) is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and(R) speaks in an earthly way.(S) He who comes from heaven is above all. 32(T) He bears witness to what he has seen and heard,(U) yet no one receives his testimony. 33Whoever receives his testimony(V) sets his seal to this,(W) that God is true. 34For he whom(X) God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit(Y) without measure. 35(Z) The Father loves the Son and(AA) has given all things into his hand. 36(AB) Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life;(AC) whoever does not obey the Son shall not(AD) see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria

 1Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and(AE) baptizing more disciples than John 2(although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3he left Judea and departed(AF) again for Galilee. 4(AG) And he had to pass through Samaria. 5So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field(AH) that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus,(AI) wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.[b]
