1(A)Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.2The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it." 3The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still (B)holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause." 4Satan answered the LORD and said, "Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. 5"(C)However, put forth Your hand now, and (D)touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face." 6So the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your power, only spare his life." 7Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with (E)sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8And he took a potsherd to scrape himself while (F)he was sitting among the ashes. 9Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!" 10But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. (G)Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?" (H)In all this Job did not sin with his lips. 11Now when Job's three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, they came each one from his own place, Eliphaz the (I)Temanite, Bildad the (J)Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to (K)sympathize with him and comfort him. 12When they lifted up their eyes at a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them (L)tore his robe and they (M)threw dust over their heads toward the sky. 13(N)Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.
1Afterward Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.2And Job said,
19This is (A)the testimony of John, when (B)the Jews sent to him priests and Levites (C)from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"20And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "(D)I am not the Christ." 21They asked him, "What then? Are you (E)Elijah?" And he said, "I am not " "Are you (F)the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." 22Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" 23He said, "I am (G)A VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said." 24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor (H)the Prophet?" 26John answered them saying, "(I)I baptize [a]in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. 27"It is (J)He who comes after me, the (K)thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." 28These things took place in Bethany (L)beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, (M)the Lamb of God who (N)takes away the sin of the world! 30"This is He on behalf of whom I said, '(O)After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, (P)for He existed before me.' 31"I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing [b]in water." 32John (Q)testified saying, "(R)I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33"I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize [c]in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, (S)this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.' 34"I myself have seen, and have testified that this is (T)the Son of God."
