1There was a man in the (A)land of Uz whose name was (B)Job; and that man was (C)blameless, upright, (D)fearing God and (E)turning away from evil.2(F)Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. 3(G)His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was (H)the greatest of all the men of the east. 4His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering (I)burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "(J)Perhaps my sons have sinned and (K)cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually. 6(L)Now there was a day when the (M)sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and [a]Satan also came among them. 7The LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "(N)From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it." 8The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered (O)My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, (P)a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil." 9Then (Q)Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing? 10"(R)Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? (S)You have blessed the work of his hands, and his (T)possessions have increased in the land. 11"(U)But put forth Your hand now and (V)touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face." 12Then the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him." So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD.
13Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house,14a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15and the (W)Sabeans attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 16While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "(X)The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 17While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The (Y)Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 18While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 19and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 20Then Job arose and (Z)tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21He said,
1(A)In the beginning was (B)the Word, and the Word was (C)with God, and (D)the Word was God.2He was in the beginning with God. 3(E)All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4(F)In Him was life, and the life was (G)the Light of men. 5(H)The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]comprehend it.
6There [b]came a man sent from God, whose name was (I)John.7He came (J)as a witness, to testify about the Light, (K)so that all might believe through him. 8(L)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. 9There was (M)the true Light [c]which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. 10He was in the world, and (N)the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11He came to His [d]own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become (O)children of God, even (P)to those who believe in His name, 13(Q)who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
14And (R)the Word (S)became flesh, and (T)dwelt among us, and (U)we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of (V)grace and (W)truth.15John (X)testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, '(Y)He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, (Z)for He existed before me.'" 16For of His (AA)fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. 17For (AB)the Law was given through Moses; (AC)grace and (AD)truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18(AE)No one has seen God at any time; (AF)the only begotten God who is (AG)in the bosom of the Father, (AH)He has explained Him.
