Thursday of Epiphany 3

First Reading: Zech. 10:1-11:3

The Restoration for Judah and Israel

 1Ask rain(A) from the LORD
in the season of(B) the spring rain, from the LORD(C) who makes the storm clouds,
and(D) he will give them showers of rain,
to everyone the vegetation in the field. 2For(E) the household gods(F) utter nonsense,
and the diviners see lies;(G) they tell false dreams
   and give empty consolation.Therefore(H) the people wander like sheep;
they are afflicted for lack of a shepherd.

3(I) "My anger is hot against the shepherds,
and(J) I will punish the leaders;[a]for(K) the LORD of hosts cares for his flock, the house of Judah,
and will make them like his majestic steed in battle. 4From him shall come(L) the cornerstone,
from him(M) the tent peg, from him the battle bow,
from him every ruler—(N) all of them together. 5They shall be like mighty men in battle,
   (O) trampling the foe in the mud of the streets;they shall fight because the LORD is with them,
and they shall put to shame(P) the riders on horses.

6(Q) "I will strengthen the house of Judah,
and(R) I will save the house of Joseph.(S) I will bring them back(T) because I have compassion on them,
and they shall be as though I had not rejected them,
for(U) I am the LORD their God and I will answer them. 7Then Ephraim shall become like a mighty warrior,
   and(V) their hearts shall be glad as with wine.Their children shall see it and be glad;
their hearts shall rejoice in the LORD.

8(W) "I will whistle for them and(X) gather them in,
   for I have redeemed them,
and(Y) they shall be as many as they were before. 9(Z) Though I scattered them among the nations,
yet in far countries(AA) they shall remember me,
and with their children they shall live and return. 10(AB) I will bring them home from the land of Egypt,
and gather them from Assyria, and(AC) I will bring them to the land of Gilead and to Lebanon,
(AD) till there is no room for them. 11(AE) He shall pass through the sea of troubles
and strike down the waves of the sea,
(AF) and all the depths of the Nile shall be dried up.The pride of Assyria shall be laid low,
and(AG) the scepter of Egypt shall depart. 12(AH) I will make them strong in the LORD,
and(AI) they shall walk in his name,"
         declares the LORD.

The Flock Doomed to Slaughter

 1Open your doors,(AJ) O Lebanon,
that the fire may devour your cedars! 2Wail, O cypress, for the cedar has fallen,
for the glorious trees are ruined!Wail,(AK) oaks of Bashan,
for the thick forest has been felled! 3The sound of(AL) the wail of(AM) the shepherds,
for their glory is ruined! The sound of the roar of(AN) the lions,
for the thicket of the Jordan is ruined!

Second Reading: 2 Tim. 3:1-17

Godlessness in the Last Days

1But understand this, that(A) in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2For people will be(B) lovers of self,(C) lovers of money,(D) proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3(E) heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal,(F) not loving good, 4treacherous, reckless,(G) swollen with conceit,(H) lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5having the appearance of godliness, but(I) denying its power.(J) Avoid such people. 6For among them are(K) those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7always learning and never able to(L) arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8Just as(M) Jannes and Jambres(N) opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth,(O) men corrupted in mind and(P) disqualified regarding the faith. 9But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all,(Q) as was that of those two men.

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

10(R) You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me(S) at Antioch,(T) at Iconium, and(U) at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet(V) from them all(W) the Lord rescued me. 12Indeed, all who desire to(X) live a godly life in Christ Jesus(Y) will be persecuted, 13while(Z) evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and(AA) being deceived. 14But as for you,(AB) continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom[a] you learned it 15and how(AC) from childhood you have been acquainted with(AD) the sacred writings,(AE) which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16(AF) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17that(AG) the man of God[b] may be competent,(AH) equipped(AI) for every good work.
