Epiphany 3

Explanation of the Week

The Gospel of Christ is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. (Rom 1:8-17) Even in the Old Testament, the Gentiles were beneficiaries of God's saving power. Though unimpressed at first with the Word of God, a Syrian commander is persuaded to receive that Word, and in the water he is cleansed and brought to faith in the God of Israel. (2 Ki 5:1-15a) Evil is overcome by good. (Rom 12:16-21) So also in the New Testament a Roman centurion demonstrates great and humble faith in the Lord. (Mt 8:1-13) All He needs is the Word of Christ. For He trusts that Jesus' Word of healing has authority to accomplish what it says. And indeed it does. The centurion's faith is praised by our Lord above that of any Israelite. For the last shall be first, and the first last. Apart from faith in Christ, there is no salvation, even for a Jew, but only weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Old Testament (LSB): 2 Kings 5:1-15

Naaman Is Healed

 1Now (A)Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man with his master, and highly respected, because by him the LORD had given victory to Aram. The man was also a valiant warrior, but he was a leper.

 2Now the Arameans had gone out (B)in bands and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel; and she waited on Naaman's wife.

 3She said to her mistress, "I wish that my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would cure him of his leprosy."

 4Naaman went in and told his master, saying, "Thus and thus spoke the girl who is from the land of Israel."

 5Then the king of Aram said, "Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel." He departed and (C)took with him ten talents of silver and six thousand shekels of gold and ten (D)changes of clothes.

 6He brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, "And now as this letter comes to you, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to you, that you may cure him of his leprosy."

 7When the king of Israel read the letter, (E)he tore his clothes and said, "(F)Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man is sending word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? But (G)consider now, and see how he is seeking a quarrel against me."

 8It happened when Elisha (H)the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, that he sent word to the king, saying, "Why have you torn your clothes? Now let him come to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel."

 9So Naaman came with his horses and his chariots and stood at the doorway of the house of Elisha.

 10Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "(I)Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean."

 11But Naaman was furious and went away and said, "Behold, I thought, 'He will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.'

 12"Are not Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?" So he turned and (J)went away in a rage.

 13(K)Then his servants came near and spoke to him and said, "(L)My father, had the prophet told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?"

 14So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and (M)his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child and (N)he was clean.

Gehazi's Greed

 15When he returned to the man of God with all his company, and came and stood before him, he said, "Behold now, (O)I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel; so please (P)take a present from your servant now."

Jesus Cleanses a Leper; The Centurion's Faith

 1When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him.

 2And (A)a leper came to Him and (B)bowed down before Him, and said, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean."

 3Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." And immediately his (C)leprosy was cleansed.

 4And Jesus said to him, "(D)See that you tell no one; but (E)go, (F)show yourself to the priest and present the offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

 5And (G)when Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, imploring Him,

 6and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying (H)paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented."

 7Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him."

 8But the centurion said, "Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

 9"For I also am a man under (I)authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it."

 10Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, "Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel.

 11"I say to you that many (J)will come from east and west, and [a]recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven;

 12but (K)the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into (L)the outer darkness; in that place (M)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

 13And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go; it shall be done for you (N)as you have believed." And the servant was healed that very moment.

Offertory

The right hand of the LORD is exalted; The right hand of the LORD does valiantly. I shall not die, but live, And declare the works of the LORD. (Psalm 118)

Matins Psalm(s): Ps. 15

Description of a Citizen of Zion.

A Psalm of David.

    1O LORD, who may abide (A)in Your tent?
         Who may dwell on Your (B)holy hill?
    2He who (C)walks with integrity, and works righteousness,
         And (D)speaks truth in his heart.
    3He (E)does not slander with his tongue,
         Nor (F)does evil to his neighbor,
         Nor (G)takes up a reproach against his friend;
    4In whose eyes a reprobate is despised,
         But who (H)honors those who fear the LORD;
         He (I)swears to his own hurt and does not change;
    5He (J)does not put out his money [a]at interest,
         Nor (K)does he take a bribe against the innocent
         (L)He who does these things will never be shaken.

First Reading: Zech. 4:1-5:11

The Golden Lampstand and Olive Trees

 1Then (A)the angel who was speaking with me returned and (B)roused me, as a man who is awakened from his sleep.

 2He said to me, "(C)What do you see?" And I said, "I see, and behold, a (D)lampstand all of gold with its bowl on the top of it, and its (E)seven lamps on it with seven spouts belonging to each of the lamps which are on the top of it;

 3also (F)two olive trees by it, one on the right side of the bowl and the other on its left side."

 4Then I said to the angel who was speaking with me saying, "What are these, (G)my lord?"

 5So (H)the angel who was speaking with me answered and said to me, "(I)Do you not know what these are?" And I said, "No, my lord."

 6Then he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to (J)Zerubbabel saying, '(K)Not by might nor by power, but by My (L)Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts.

 7'What are you, O great (M)mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain; and he will bring forth the top stone with (N)shouts of "Grace, grace to it!"'"

 8Also the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

 9"The hands of Zerubbabel have (O)laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will (P)finish it. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.

 10"For who has despised the day of (Q)small things? But these (R)seven will be glad when they see the (S)plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel--these are the (T)eyes of the LORD which (U)range to and fro throughout the earth."

 11Then I said to him, "What are these (V)two olive trees on the right of the lampstand and on its left?"

 12And I answered the second time and said to him, "What are the two olive branches which are beside the two golden pipes, which empty the golden oil from themselves?"

 13So he answered me, saying, "(W)Do you not know what these are?" And I said, "No, (X)my lord."

 14Then he said, "These are the two (Y)anointed ones who are (Z)standing by the (AA)Lord of the whole earth."

The Flying Scroll

 1Then I lifted up my eyes again and looked, and behold, there was a flying (AB)scroll.

 2And he said to me, "(AC)What do you see?" And I answered, "I see a flying scroll; its length is twenty cubits and its width ten cubits."

 3Then he said to me, "This is the (AD)curse that is going forth over the face of the whole land; surely everyone who (AE)steals will be purged away according to the writing on one side, and everyone who (AF)swears will be purged away according to the writing on the other side.

 4"I will (AG)make it go forth," declares the LORD of hosts, "and it will (AH)enter the house of the (AI)thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name; and it will spend the night within that house and (AJ)consume it with its timber and stones."

 5Then (AK)the angel who was speaking with me went out and said to me, "Lift up now your eyes and see what this is going forth."

 6I said, "What is it?" And he said, "This is the (AL)ephah going forth." Again he said, "This is their appearance in all the land

 7(and behold, a lead cover was lifted up); and this is a woman sitting inside the ephah."

 8Then he said, "This is (AM)Wickedness!" And he threw her down into the middle of the ephah and cast the lead weight on its opening.

 9Then I lifted up my eyes and looked, and there two women were coming out with the wind in their wings; and they had wings like the wings of a (AN)stork, and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heavens.

 10I said to the angel who was speaking with me, "Where are they taking the ephah?"

 11Then he said to me, "To build a temple for her in the land of (AO)Shinar; and when it is prepared, she will be set there on her own pedestal."

Vespers Psalm(s): Ps. 33

Praise to the Creator and Preserver.

    1(A)Sing for joy in the LORD, O you righteous ones;
         Praise is (B)becoming to the upright.
    2Give thanks to the LORD with the (C)lyre;
         Sing praises to Him with a (D)harp of ten strings.
    3Sing to Him a (E)new song;
         Play skillfully with (F)a shout of joy.
    4For the word of the LORD (G)is upright,
         And all His work is done (H)in faithfulness.
    5He (I)loves righteousness and justice;
         The (J)earth is full of the lovingkindness of the LORD.
    6By the (K)word of the LORD the heavens were made,
         And (L)by the breath of His mouth (M)all their host.
    7He gathers the (N)waters of the sea together as a heap;
         He lays up the deeps in storehouses.
    8Let (O)all the earth fear the LORD;
         Let all the inhabitants of the world (P)stand in awe of Him.
    9For (Q)He spoke, and it was done;
         He commanded, and it stood fast.
    10The LORD (R)nullifies the counsel of the nations;
         He frustrates the plans of the peoples.
    11The (S)counsel of the LORD stands forever,
         The (T)plans of His heart from generation to generation.
    12Blessed is the (U)nation whose God is the LORD,
         The people whom He has (V)chosen for His own inheritance.
    13The LORD (W)looks from heaven;
         He (X)sees all the sons of men;
    14From (Y)His dwelling place He looks out
         On all the inhabitants of the earth,
    15He who (Z)fashions the hearts of them all,
         He who (AA)understands all their works.
    16(AB)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
         A warrior is not delivered by great strength.
    17A (AC)horse is a false hope for victory;
         Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.
    18Behold, (AD)the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him,
         On those who (AE)hope for His lovingkindness,
    19To (AF)deliver their soul from death
         And to keep them alive (AG)in famine.
    20Our soul (AH)waits for the LORD;
         He is our (AI)help and our shield.
    21For our (AJ)heart rejoices in Him,
         Because we trust in His holy name.
    22Let Your lovingkindness, O LORD, be upon us,
         According as we have hoped in You.

Second Reading: Rom. 15:14-33

 14And concerning you, my brethren, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of (A)goodness, filled with (B)all knowledge and able also to admonish one another.

 15But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of (C)the grace that was given me from God,

 16to be (D)a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the (E)gospel of God, so that my (F)offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

 17Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found (G)reason for boasting in (H)things pertaining to God.

 18For I will not presume to speak of anything except what (I)Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed,

 19in the power of (J)signs and wonders, (K)in the power of the Spirit; so that (L)from Jerusalem and round about as (M)far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

 20And thus I aspired to (N)preach the gospel, not where Christ was already named, (O)so that I would not build on another man's foundation;

 21but as it is written,
         "(P)THEY WHO HAD NO NEWS OF HIM SHALL SEE,
         AND THEY WHO HAVE NOT HEARD SHALL UNDERSTAND."

 22For this reason (Q)I have often been prevented from coming to you;

 23but now, with no further place for me in these regions, and since I (R)have had for many years a longing to come to you

 24whenever I (S)go to Spain--for I hope to see you in passing, and to be (T)helped on my way there by you, when I have first (U)enjoyed your company for a while--

 25but now, (V)I am going to Jerusalem (W)serving the saints.

 26For (X)Macedonia and (Y)Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.

 27Yes, they were pleased to do so, and they are indebted to them. For (Z)if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are indebted to minister to them also in material things.

 28Therefore, when I have finished this, and (AA)have put my seal on this fruit of theirs, I will (AB)go on by way of you to Spain.

 29I know that when (AC)I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ.

 30Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by (AD)the love of the Spirit, to (AE)strive together with me in your prayers to God for me,

 31that I may be (AF)rescued from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my (AG)service for Jerusalem may prove acceptable to the (AH)saints;

 32so that (AI)I may come to you in joy by (AJ)the will of God and find refreshing rest in your company.

 33Now (AK)the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
