St. Titus

Collect (LSB)

Almighty God, You called Titus to the work of pastor and teacher. Make all shepherds of Your flock diligent in preaching Your holy Word so that the whole world may know the immeasurable riches of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament (LSB): Acts 20:28-35

28"Be on guard for yourselves and for all (A)the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd (B)the church of God which (C)He purchased with His own blood.

 29"I know that after my departure (D)savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing (E)the flock;

30and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away (F)the disciples after them.

31"Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of (G)three years I did not cease to admonish each one (H)with tears.

32"And now I (I)commend you to God and to (J)the word of His grace, which is able to (K)build you up and to give you (L)the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

33"(M)I have coveted no one's silver or gold or clothes.

34"You yourselves know that (N)these hands ministered to my own needs and to the (O)men who were with me.

35"In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

Epistle: Titus 1:1-9

Salutation

1Paul, (A)a bond-servant of God and an (B)apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those (C)chosen of God and (D)the knowledge of the truth which is (E)according to godliness,

2in (F)the hope of eternal life, which God, (G)who cannot lie, (H)promised (I)long ages ago,

3but (J)at the proper time manifested, even His word, in (K)the proclamation (L)with which I was entrusted (M)according to the commandment of (N)God our Savior,

4To (O)Titus, (P)my true child in a (Q)common faith: (R)Grace and peace from God the Father and (S)Christ Jesus our Savior.

Qualifications of Elders

5For this reason I left you in (T)Crete, that you would set in order what remains and (U)appoint (V)elders in every city as I directed you,

6namely, (W)if any man is above reproach, the (X)husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of (Y)dissipation or (Z)rebellion.

7For the (AA)overseer must be above reproach as (AB)God's steward, not (AC)self-willed, not quick-tempered, not (AD)addicted to wine, not pugnacious, (AE)not fond of sordid gain,

8but (AF)hospitable, (AG)loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,

9(AH)holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in (AI)sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

Gospel: Luke 10:1-9

The Seventy Sent Out

1Now after this (A)the Lord appointed seventy (B)others, and sent them (C)in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.

2And He was saying to them, "(D)The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

3"Go; (E)behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.

4"(F)Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way.

5"Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house.'

6"If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.

7"Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for (G)the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house.

 8"Whatever city you enter and they receive you, (H)eat what is set before you;

9and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, '(I)The kingdom of God has come near to you.'

God's Favor to Zion

1Then I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a man with a (A)measuring line in his hand.

2So I said, "Where are you going?" And he said to me, "To (B)measure Jerusalem, to see how wide it is and how long it is."

3And behold, the (C)angel who was speaking with me was going out, and another angel was coming out to meet him,

4and said to him, "Run, speak to that (D)young man, saying, '(E)Jerusalem will be inhabited (F)without walls because of the (G)multitude of men and cattle within it.

5'For I,' declares the LORD, 'will be a (H)wall of fire around her, and I will be the (I)glory in her midst.'"

6"Ho there! (J)Flee from the land of the north," declares the LORD, "for I have (K)dispersed you as the four winds of the heavens," declares the LORD.

7"Ho, Zion! (L)Escape, you who are living with the daughter of Babylon."

8For thus says the LORD of hosts, "After (M)glory He has sent me against the nations which plunder you, for he who touches you, touches the (N)apple of His eye.

9"For behold, I will (O)wave My hand over them so that they will be (P)plunder for their slaves. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me.

10"(Q)Sing for joy and be glad, O daughter of Zion; for behold I am coming and I will (R)dwell in your midst," declares the LORD.

11"(S)Many nations will join themselves to the LORD in that day and will become My people Then I will (T)dwell in your midst, and you will (U)know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me to you.

12"The LORD will (V)possess Judah as His portion in the holy land, and will again (W)choose Jerusalem.

13"(X)Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD; for He is (Y)aroused from His holy habitation."

Joshua, the High Priest

1Then he showed me (Z)Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and (AA)Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.

2The LORD said to Satan, "(AB)The LORD rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the LORD who has (AC)chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a (AD)brand plucked from the fire?"

3Now Joshua was clothed with (AE)filthy garments and standing before the angel.

4He spoke and said to those who were standing before him, saying, "(AF)Remove the filthy garments from him " Again he said to him, "See, I have (AG)taken your iniquity away from you and will (AH)clothe you with festal robes."

5Then I said, "Let them put a clean (AI)turban on his head." So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments, while the angel of the LORD was standing by.

6And the angel of the LORD admonished Joshua, saying,

7"Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'If you will (AJ)walk in My ways and if you will perform My service, then you will also (AK)govern My house and also have charge of My (AL)courts, and I will grant you free access among these who are standing here.

The Branch

8'Now listen, Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who are sitting in front of you--indeed they are men who are a (AM)symbol, for behold, I am going to bring in My servant the (AN)Branch.

9'For behold, the stone that I have set before Joshua; on one stone are (AO)seven eyes Behold, I will engrave an inscription on it,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'and I will (AP)remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

10'In that day,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'every one of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his (AQ)vine and under his fig tree.'"

Self-denial on Behalf of Others

1Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of (A)those without strength and not just please ourselves.

2Each of us is to (B)please his neighbor for his good, to his (C)edification.

3For even (D)Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "(E)THE REPROACHES OF THOSE WHO REPROACHED YOU FELL ON ME."

4For (F)whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

5Now may the (G)God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you (H)to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus,

6so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify (I)the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7Therefore, (J)accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.

8For I say that Christ has become a servant to (K)the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm (L)the promises given to the fathers,

9and for (M)the Gentiles to (N)glorify God for His mercy; as it is written,
"(O)THEREFORE I WILL GIVE PRAISE TO YOU AMONG THE GENTILES,
AND I WILL SING TO YOUR NAME."

 10Again he says,
"(P)REJOICE, O GENTILES, WITH HIS PEOPLE."

 11And again,
"(Q)PRAISE THE LORD ALL YOU GENTILES,
AND LET ALL THE PEOPLES PRAISE HIM."

 12Again Isaiah says,
"(R)THERE SHALL COME (S)THE ROOT OF JESSE,
AND HE WHO ARISES TO RULE OVER THE GENTILES,
(T)IN HIM SHALL THE GENTILES HOPE."

13Now may the God of hope fill you with all (U)joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope (V)by the power of the Holy Spirit.
