St. Timothy, Pastor

Collect (LSB)

Lord Jesus Christ, You have always given to Your Church on earth faithful shepherds such as Timothy to guide and feed Your flock. Make all pastors diligent to preach Your holy Word and administer Your means of grace, and grant Your people wisdom to follow in the way that leads to life eternal; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit , one God, now and forever.

Epistle: 1 Tim.6:11-16

11But (A)flee from these things, you (B)man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, (C)faith, (D)love, perseverance and gentleness.

12(E)Fight the good fight of (F)faith; (G)take hold of the eternal life (H)to which you were called, and you made the good (I)confession in the presence of (J)many witnesses.

13(K)I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of (L)Christ Jesus, who testified the (M)good confession (N)before Pontius Pilate,

14that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the (O)appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15which He will bring about at (P)the proper time--He who is (Q)the blessed and (R)only Sovereign, (S)the King of kings and (T)Lord of lords,

16(U)who alone possesses immortality and (V)dwells in unapproachable light, (W)whom no man has seen or can see (X)To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

Gospel: Matt. 24:42-47

Be Ready for His Coming

42"Therefore (A)be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.

43"But be sure of this, that (B)if the head of the house had known (C)at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

44"For this reason (D)you also must be ready; for (E)the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

45"(F)Who then is the (G)faithful and (H)sensible slave whom his master (I)put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time?

46"Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes.

47"Truly I say to you that (J)he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

First Reading: Joel 3:1-21

The Nations Will Be Judged

1"For behold, (A)in those days and at that time,
When I (B)restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
2I will (C)gather all the nations
And bring them down to the (D)valley of Jehoshaphat
Then I will (E)enter into judgment with them there
On behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel,
         Whom they have (F)scattered among the nations;
And they have (G)divided up My land.
3"They have also (H)cast lots for My people,
         (I)Traded a boy for a harlot
And sold a girl for wine that they may drink.

4"Moreover, what are you to Me, O (J)Tyre, Sidon and all the regions of (K)Philistia? Are you rendering Me a recompense? But if you do recompense Me, swiftly and speedily I will (L)return your recompense on your head.

5"Since you have (M)taken My silver and My gold, brought My precious treasures to your temples,

6and sold the (N)sons of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks in order to remove them far from their territory,

7behold, I am going to (O)arouse them from the place where you have sold them, and return your recompense on your head.

8"Also I will (P)sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the sons of Judah, and they will sell them to the (Q)Sabeans, to a distant nation," for the LORD has spoken.
    9(R)Proclaim this among the nations:
         (S)Prepare a war; (T)rouse the mighty men!
Let all the soldiers draw near, let them come up!
    10(U)Beat your plowshares into swords
         And your pruning hooks into spears;
(V)Let the weak say, "I am a mighty man."
11(W)Hasten and come, all you surrounding nations,
         And gather yourselves there
Bring down, O LORD, Your (X)mighty ones.
    12Let the nations be aroused
And come up to the (Y)valley of Jehoshaphat,
For there I will sit to (Z)judge
         All the surrounding nations.
13(AA)Put in the sickle, for the (AB)harvest is ripe
         Come, (AC)tread, for the (AD)wine press is full;
The vats overflow, for their (AE)wickedness is great.
14(AF)Multitudes, multitudes in the (AG)valley of decision!
For the (AH)day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
15The (AI)sun and moon grow dark
And the stars lose their brightness.
    16The LORD (AJ)roars from Zion
And (AK)utters His voice from Jerusalem,
And the (AL)heavens and the earth tremble
But the LORD is a (AM)refuge for His people
And a (AN)stronghold to the sons of Israel.
17Then you will (AO)know that I am the LORD your God,
Dwelling in Zion, My (AP)holy mountain
         So Jerusalem will be (AQ)holy,
And (AR)strangers will pass through it no more.

Judah Will Be Blessed

    18And in that day
The (AS)mountains will drip with sweet wine,
And the hills will (AT)flow with milk,
         And all the (AU)brooks of Judah will flow with water;
And a (AV)spring will go out from the house of the LORD
To water the valley of Shittim.
    19Egypt will become a waste,
And Edom will become a desolate wilderness,
Because of the (AW)violence done to the sons of Judah,
In whose land they have shed innocent blood.
20But Judah will be (AX)inhabited forever
         And Jerusalem for all generations.
21And I will (AY)avenge their blood which I have not avenged,
For the LORD dwells in Zion.

Second Reading: Rom. 12:14-13:14

14(A)Bless those who persecute [a]you; bless and do not curse.

15(B)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

16(C)Be of the same mind toward one another; (D)do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly (E)Do not be wise in your own estimation.

17(F)Never pay back evil for evil to anyone (G)Respect what is right in the sight of all men.

18If possible, (H)so far as it depends on you, (I)be at peace with all men.

19(J)Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "(K)VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.

20"(L)BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD."

21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Be Subject to Government
1Every (M)person is to be in (N)subjection to the governing authorities For (O)there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.

2Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

 3For (P)rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same;

4for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an (Q)avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil.

5Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also (R)for conscience' sake.

6For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.

7(S)Render to all what is due them: (T)tax to whom tax is due; (U)custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

8Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for (V)he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.

9For this, "(W)YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "(X)YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

10Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore (Y)love is the fulfillment of the law.

11Do this, knowing the time, that it is (Z)already the hour for you to (AA)awaken from sleep; for now [b]salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.

12(AB)The night is almost gone, and (AC)the day is near Therefore let us lay aside (AD)the deeds of darkness and put on (AE)the armor of light.

13Let us (AF)behave properly as in the day, (AG)not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.

14But (AH)put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh (AI)in regard to its lusts.
