Wednesday of Epiphany 2

First Reading: Joel 2:18-32

Deliverance Promised

    18Then the LORD will be (A)zealous for His land
         And will have (B)pity on His people.
    19The LORD will answer and say to His people,
         "Behold, I am going to (C)send you grain, new wine and oil,
         And you will be satisfied in full with them;
         And I will (D)never again make you a reproach among the nations.
    20"But I will remove the (E)northern army far from you,
         And I will drive it into a parched and desolate land,
         And its vanguard into the (F)eastern sea,
         And its rear guard into the (G)western sea
         And its (H)stench will arise and its foul smell will come up,
         For it has done great things."
    21(I)Do not fear, O land, rejoice and be glad,
         For the LORD has done (J)great things.
    22Do not fear, beasts of the field,
         For the (K)pastures of the wilderness have turned green,
         For the tree has borne its fruit,
         The fig tree and the vine have yielded in full.
    23So rejoice, O (L)sons of Zion,
         And (M)be glad in the LORD your God;
         For He has (N)given you [a]the early rain for your vindication
         And He has poured down for you the rain,
         The [b]early and [c](O)latter rain as before.
    24The threshing floors will be full of grain,
         And the vats will (P)overflow with the new wine and oil.
    25"Then I will make up to you for the years
         That the swarming (Q)locust has eaten,
         The creeping locust, the stripping locust and the gnawing locust,
         My great army which I sent among you.
    26"You will have plenty to (R)eat and be satisfied
         And (S)praise the name of the LORD your God,
         Who has (T)dealt wondrously with you;
         Then My people will (U)never be put to shame.
    27"Thus you will (V)know that I am in the midst of Israel,
         And that I am the LORD your God,
         And there is (W)no other;
         And My people will never be (X)put to shame.

The Promise of the Spirit

    28"(Y)It will come about after this
         That I will (Z)pour out My Spirit on all (AA)mankind;
         And your sons and daughters will prophesy,
         Your old men will dream dreams,
         Your young men will see visions.
    29"Even on the (AB)male and female servants
         I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

The Day of the LORD

    30"I will (AC)display wonders in the sky and on the earth,
         Blood, fire and columns of smoke.
    31"The (AD)sun will be turned into darkness
         And the moon into blood
         Before the (AE)great and awesome day of the LORD comes.
    32"And it will come about that (AF)whoever calls on the name of the LORD
         Will be delivered;
         For (AG)on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
         There will be those who (AH)escape,
         As the LORD has said,
         Even among the (AI)survivors whom the LORD calls.

Second Reading: Rom. 11:25-12:13

 25For (A)I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this (B)mystery--so that you will not be (C)wise in your own estimation--that a partial (D)hardening has happened to Israel until the (E)fullness of the Gentiles has come in;

 26and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written,
         "(F)THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION,
         HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB."
    27"(G)THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM,
         (H)WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS."

 28From the standpoint of the gospel they are (I)enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God's choice they are beloved for (J)the sake of the fathers;

 29for the gifts and the (K)calling of God (L)are irrevocable.

 30For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience,

 31so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy.

 32For (M)God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.

 33Oh, the depth of (N)the riches both of the (O)wisdom and knowledge of God! (P)How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!

 34For (Q)WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, OR WHO BECAME HIS COUNSELOR?

 35Or (R)WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM THAT IT MIGHT BE PAID BACK TO HIM AGAIN?

 36For (S)from Him and through Him and to Him are all things (T)To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

Dedicated Service
 1Therefore (U)I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to (V)present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

 2And do not (W)be conformed to (X)this world, but be transformed by the (Y)renewing of your mind, so that you may (Z)prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

 3For through (AA)the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (AB)not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to (AC)each a measure of faith.

 4For (AD)just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,

 5so we, (AE)who are many, are (AF)one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

 6Since we have gifts that (AG)differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if (AH)prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;

 7if (AI)service, in his serving; or he who (AJ)teaches, in his teaching;

 8or he who (AK)exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with [a](AL)liberality; (AM)he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with (AN)cheerfulness.

 9Let (AO)love be without hypocrisy (AP)Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.

 10Be (AQ)devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another (AR)in honor;

 11not lagging behind in diligence, (AS)fervent in spirit, (AT)serving the Lord;

 12(AU)rejoicing in hope, (AV)persevering in tribulation, (AW)devoted to prayer,

 13(AX)contributing to the needs of the saints, (AY)practicing hospitality.
