Explanation of the Week

The coming of the Messianic kingdom means the restoration of creation. The sign of this restoration is that "the mountains shall drip with sweet wine." (Amos 9:11-15) When the elements of a fallen creation fail and run short at a wedding feast, our Lord Jesus steps in to restore creation and miraculously changes water into an abundance of the very best wine. (Jn 2:1-11) With this sign Christ manifests His glory. The "back" of God (Ex 33:12-23) is revealed to those who believe. The hour will come when Jesus will again manifest His glory by taking creation's curse into His own body to release us from its power. The Groom will give His life for the Bride (Eph 5:22-32), and from His side will flow water and blood, the holy sacraments by which she is cleansed and made one with Him. Through this sacrificial love of Christ we are enabled to "be kindly affectionate to one another, . . . in honor giving preference to one another." (Rom 12:6-16)

Old Testament · Ex. 33:12-23

Moses Intercedes

 12Then Moses said to the LORD, "See, You say to me, '(A)Bring up this people!' But You Yourself have not let me know (B)whom You will send with me (C)Moreover, You have said, 'I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.'

 13"Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, (D)let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight (E)Consider too, that this nation is Your people."

 14And He said, "(F)My presence shall go with you, and (G)I will give you rest."

 15Then he said to Him, "(H)If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here.

 16"For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that (I)we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the earth?"

 17The LORD said to Moses, "I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; (J)for you have found favor in My sight and I have known you by name."

 18(K)Then Moses said, "I pray You, show me Your glory!"

 19And He said, "(L)I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the LORD before you; and (M)I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion."

 20But He said, "You cannot see My face, (N)for no man can see Me and live!"

 21Then the LORD said, "Behold, there is a place by Me, and (O)you shall stand there on the rock;

 22and it will come about, while My glory is passing by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock and (P)cover you with My hand until I have passed by.

 23"Then I will take My hand away and you shall see My back, but (Q)My face shall not be seen."

Epistle · Rom. 12:6-16

 6Since we have gifts that (A)differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if (B)prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;

 7if (C)service, in his serving; or he who (D)teaches, in his teaching;

 8or he who (E)exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with [a](F)liberality; (G)he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with (H)cheerfulness.

 9Let (I)love be without hypocrisy (J)Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.

 10Be (K)devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another (L)in honor;

 11not lagging behind in diligence, (M)fervent in spirit, (N)serving the Lord;

 12(O)rejoicing in hope, (P)persevering in tribulation, (Q)devoted to prayer,

 13(R)contributing to the needs of the saints, (S)practicing hospitality.

 14(T)Bless those who persecute [b]you; bless and do not curse.

 15(U)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

 16(V)Be of the same mind toward one another; (W)do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly (X)Do not be wise in your own estimation.

Gospel · John 2:1-11

Miracle at Cana

 1On (A)the third day there was a wedding in (B)Cana of Galilee, and the (C)mother of Jesus was there;

 2and both Jesus and His (D)disciples were invited to the wedding.

 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine."

 4And Jesus said to her, "(E)Woman, (F)what does that have to do with us? (G)My hour has not yet come."

 5His (H)mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."

 6Now there were six stone waterpots set there (I)for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.

 7Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim.

 8And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the [a]headwaiter." So they took it to him.

 9When the headwaiter tasted the water (J)which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom,

 10and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people (K)have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now."

 11This beginning of His (L)signs Jesus did in Cana of (M)Galilee, and manifested His (N)glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

Morning Psalm · Ps. 14

Folly and Wickedness of Men.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

    1The fool has (A)said in his heart, "There is no God "
         They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds;
         There is (B)no one who does good.
    2The LORD has (C)looked down from heaven upon the sons of men
         To see if there are any who (D)understand,
         Who (E)seek after God.
    3They have all (F)turned aside, together they have become corrupt;
         There is (G)no one who does good, not even one.
    4Do all the workers of wickedness (H)not know,
         Who (I)eat up my people as they eat bread,
         And (J)do not call upon the Lord?
    5There they are in great dread,
         For God is with the (K)righteous generation.
    6You would put to shame the counsel of the afflicted,
         But the LORD is his (L)refuge.
    7Oh, that (M)the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!
         When the LORD [a](N)restores His captive people,
         Jacob will rejoice, Israel will be glad.

First Reading · Ezek. 47:1-14; Ezek 47:21-23

Water from the Temple

 1Then he brought me back to the (A)door of the house; and behold, (B)water was flowing from under the threshold of the house toward the east, for the house faced east. And the water was flowing down from under, from the right side of the house, from south of the altar.

 2He brought me out by way of the north gate and led me around on the outside to the outer gate by way of the gate that faces east. And behold, water was trickling from the south side.

 3When the man went out toward the east with a line in his hand, he measured a thousand cubits, and he led me through the water, water reaching the ankles.

 4Again he measured a thousand and led me through the water, water reaching the knees. Again he measured a thousand and led me through the water, water reaching the loins.

 5Again he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not ford, for the water had risen, enough water to swim in, a (C)river that could not be forded.

 6He said to me, "Son of man, have you (D)seen this?" Then he brought me back to the bank of the river.

 7Now when I had returned, behold, on the bank of the river there were very many (E)trees on the one side and on the other.

 8Then he said to me, "These waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the (F)Arabah; then they go toward the sea, being made to flow into the (G)sea, and the waters of the sea become fresh.

 9"It will come about that every living creature which swarms in every place where the river goes, will live. And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the others become fresh; so (H)everything will live where the river goes.

 10"And it will come about that (I)fishermen will stand beside it; from (J)Engedi to Eneglaim there will be a place for the (K)spreading of nets Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the (L)Great Sea, (M)very many.

 11"But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for (N)salt.

 12"(O)By the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all kinds of (P)trees for food Their (Q)leaves will not wither and their fruit will not fail They will bear every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their (R)leaves for healing."

Boundaries and Division of the Land

 13Thus says the Lord GOD, "This shall be the (S)boundary by which you shall divide the land for an inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel; Joseph shall have two (T)portions.

 14"You shall divide it for an inheritance, each one equally with the other; for I (U)swore to give it to your forefathers, and this land shall fall to you as an inheritance.

 23"And in the tribe with which the alien stays, there you shall give him his inheritance," declares the Lord GOD.

Evening Psalm · Ps. 16

The LORD the Psalmist's Portion in Life and Deliverer in Death.

A Mikhtam[a] of David.

    1(A)Preserve me, O God, for (B)I take refuge in You.
    2I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord;
         I (C)have no good besides You."
    3As for the (D)saints who are in the earth,
         They are the majestic ones (E)in whom is all my delight.
    4The (F)sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied;
         I shall not pour out their drink offerings of (G)blood,
         Nor will I (H)take their names upon my lips.
    5The LORD is the (I)portion of my inheritance and my (J)cup;
         You support my (K)lot.
    6The (L)lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;
         Indeed, my heritage is (M)beautiful to me.
    7I will bless the LORD who has (N)counseled me;
         Indeed, my (O)mind instructs me in the night.
    8(P)I have (Q)set the LORD continually before me;
         Because He is (R)at my right hand, (S)I will not be shaken.
    9Therefore (T)my heart is glad and (U)my glory rejoices;
         My flesh also will (V)dwell securely.
    10For You (W)will not abandon my soul to Sheol;
         Nor will You (X)allow Your Holy One to [b]undergo decay.
    11You will make known to me (Y)the path of life;
         In (Z)Your presence is fullness of joy;
         In Your right hand there are (AA)pleasures forever.

Second Reading · Rom. 9: 19-33

 19(A)You will say to me then, "(B)Why does He still find fault? For (C)who resists His will?"

 20On the contrary, who are you, (D)O man, who (E)answers back to God? (F)The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it?

 21Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?

 22What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much (G)patience vessels of wrath (H)prepared for destruction?

 23And He did so to make known (I)the riches of His glory upon (J)vessels of mercy, which He (K)prepared beforehand for glory,

 24even us, whom He also (L)called, (M)not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.

 25As He says also in Hosea,
         "(N)I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,'
         AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED.'"
    26"(O)AND IT SHALL BE THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM, 'YOU ARE NOT MY PEOPLE,'
         THERE THEY SHALL BE CALLED SONS OF (P)THE LIVING GOD."

 27Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "(Q)THOUGH THE NUMBER OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL BE (R)LIKE THE SAND OF THE SEA, IT IS (S)THE REMNANT THAT WILL BE SAVED;

 28(T)FOR THE LORD WILL EXECUTE HIS WORD ON THE EARTH, THOROUGHLY AND QUICKLY."

 29And just as Isaiah foretold,
         "(U)UNLESS (V)THE LORD OF SABAOTH HAD LEFT TO US A POSTERITY,
         (W)WE WOULD HAVE BECOME LIKE SODOM, AND WOULD HAVE RESEMBLED GOMORRAH."

 30(X)What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even (Y)the righteousness which is by faith;

 31but Israel, (Z)pursuing a law of righteousness, did not (AA)arrive at that law.

 32Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over (AB)the stumbling stone,

 33just as it is written,
         "(AC)BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION (AD)A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE,
         (AE)AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM (AF)WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."
