The Baptism of Our Lord
Explanation of the Week
In the days of Solomon, the Lord dwelt among His people in the temple. The glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord in the form of a cloud. (1 Ki 8:6-13) Now He who is the glory of the Lord in the flesh, Jesus, enters the temple to show that He is Himself the everlasting temple and dwelling place of God. (Lk 2:41-52) Our young Lord, true man, subject to His mother Mary and Joseph, reveals Himself also to be true God, whose father is not Joseph but the Almighty Father in heaven. Jesus does this at the time of the Passover. For He came to be the sacrificial Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Even as He was found after three days, so He would later rise from the dead on the third day that the favor of God might rest also upon us. It is by these mercies of God that we present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God through Christ. (Rom 12:1-5)
I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and | lifted up,*
And the train of His robe filled the | temple.
And I heard the voice of a great multitude, | saying,*
"Alleluia! For the Lord God Omni- | potent reigns! (Isaiah 6:1, Revelation 19:6)
Make a joyful shout to the LORD, | all you lands!*
Serve the LORD with | gladness;
Know that the LORD, | He is God;*
it is He who has made us, and not | we ourselves;
enter into His gates with thanks- | giving,*
and into His | courts with praise.
For the LORD is good; His mercy is ever- | lasting,*
and His truth endures to all gener- | ations. (Psalm 100:1-5)
Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River You pro claimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized in His name faithful in their calling as Your children and inheritors with Him of everlasting life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
O Lord, we beseech Thee mercifully to receive the prayers of Thy people who call upon Thee; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfill the same; through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
Old Testament (LSB): Isaiah 42:1-7
God's Promise concerning His Servant
1"(A)Behold, My (B)Servant, whom I uphold;
My (C)chosen one in whom My (D)soul delights
I have put My (E)Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth (F)justice to the nations.
2"He will not cry out or raise His voice,
Nor make His voice heard in the street.
3"A bruised reed He will not break
And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish;
He will faithfully bring forth (G)justice.
4"He will not be (H)disheartened or crushed
Until He has established justice in the earth;
And the (I)coastlands will wait expectantly for His law."
5Thus says God the LORD,
created the heavens and (K)
stretched them out,
Who spread out the (L)
earth and its offspring,
gives breath to the people on it
And spirit to those who walk in it,
6"I am the LORD, I have (N)
called You in righteousness,
I will also (O)
hold You by the hand and (P)
watch over You,
And I will appoint You as a (Q)
covenant to the people,
As a (R)
light to the nations,
open blind eyes,
bring out prisoners from the dungeon
And those who dwell in darkness from the prison. Cross references:

26For consider your (A)
calling, brethren, that there were (B)
not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;
God has chosen the foolish things of (D)
the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of (E)

The Baptism of Jesus
13(A)Then Jesus arrived (B)from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him.
14But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?"
15But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us (C)
to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted Him.
16After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and (D)
he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,
17and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "(E)
This is [a]
My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." Footnotes:

13"Thus says the Lord GOD, 'Because they say to you, "You are a (A)
devourer of men and have bereaved your nation of children,"
14therefore you will no longer devour men and no longer bereave your nation of children,' declares the Lord GOD.

16Then the word of the LORD came to me saying,
17"Son of man, when the house of Israel was living in their own land, they (E)
defiled it by their ways and their deeds; their way before Me was like (F)
the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity.
18"Therefore I (G)
poured out My wrath on them for the blood which they had shed on the land, because they had defiled it with their idols.
19"Also I (H)
scattered them among the nations and they were dispersed throughout the lands (I)
According to their ways and their deeds I judged them.
20"When they came to the nations where they went, they (J)
profaned My holy name, because it was said of them, 'These are the (K)
people of the LORD; yet they have come out of His land.'
21"But I had concern for My (L)
holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went.

23"I will (N)

nations will know that I am the LORD," declares the Lord GOD, "when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight.
24"For I will (P)
take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands and bring you into your own land.
25"Then I will (Q)
sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your (R)

Justification by Faith Evidenced in Old Testament
1What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather (A)according to the flesh, has found?
2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but (B)
not before God.
3For what does the Scripture say? "(C)
ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."
4Now to the one who (D)
works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.
5But to the one who does not work, but (E)
believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
6just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN,
AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.
BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT (H)
TAKE INTO ACCOUNT."
9Is this blessing then on (I)
the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For (J)
we say, "(K)
FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."
10How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
11and he (L)
received the sign of circumcision, (M)
a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be (N)
the father of (O)
all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
12and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.
the promise to Abraham or to his descendants (Q)
that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.
if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified;
the Law brings about wrath, but (T)
where there is no law, there also is no violation.
16For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with (U)
grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to (V)
all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to (W)
those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is (X)
the father of us all,
17(as it is written, "(Y)
A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU") in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, (Z)
who gives life to the dead and (AA)
calls into being (AB)
that which does not exist.
18In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become (AC)
a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, "(AD)
SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE."
19Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now (AE)
as good as dead since (AF)
he was about a hundred years old, and (AG)
the deadness of Sarah's womb;
20yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, (AH)
giving glory to God,
being fully assured that (AJ)
what God had promised, He was able also to perform.
IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.
not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him,
24but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those (AM)
who believe in Him who (AN)
raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
25He who was (AO)
delivered over because of our transgressions, and was (AP)
raised because of our justification. Cross references:
