Saturday of Sunday after New Years

First Reading: Ezek.34:1-24

Prophecy Against the Shepherds of Israel

1The word of the LORD came to me: 2(A) "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord GOD:(B) Ah, shepherds of Israel(C) who have been feeding yourselves!(D) Should not shepherds feed the sheep? 3(E) You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool,(F) you slaughter the fat ones, but you do not feed the sheep. 4(G) The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed,(H) the injured you have not bound up,(I) the strayed you have not brought back,(J) the lost you have not sought, and with force and harshness you have ruled them. 5(K) So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and(L) they became food for all the wild beasts. 6My sheep were scattered; they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth,(M) with none to search or seek for them.

7"Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: 8(N) As I live, declares the Lord GOD, surely because(O) my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd, and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep, 9therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: 10Thus says the Lord GOD,(P) Behold, I am against the shepherds, and(Q) I will require my sheep at their hand and(R) put a stop to their feeding the sheep.(S) No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves.(T) I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them.

The Lord GOD Will Seek Them Out

11"For thus says the Lord GOD:(U) Behold, I, I(V) myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. 12As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on(W) a day of clouds and(X) thick darkness. 13And I will bring them out from the peoples(Y) and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on(Z) the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14(AA) I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land.(AB) There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. 15(AC) I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep,(AD) and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. 16(AE) I will seek the lost,(AF) and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and(AG) the fat and the strong I will destroy.[a] I will feed them in justice.

17"As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord GOD:(AH) Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and(AI) male goats. 18Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture; and to drink of(AJ) clear water, that you must muddy the rest of the water with your feet? 19And must my sheep eat what you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have muddied with your feet?

20"Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD to them: Behold, I, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21Because you push with side and shoulder, and(AK) thrust at all the(AL) weak with your horns, till you have scattered them abroad, 22I will rescue[b] my flock;(AM) they shall no longer be a prey. And I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23And(AN) I will set up over them one shepherd,(AO) my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24And(AP) I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them.(AQ) I am the LORD; I have spoken.

Second Reading: Rom. 3:19-31

19Now we know that whatever(A) the law says it speaks to those who are under the law,(B) so that every mouth may be stopped, and(C) the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For(D) by works of the law no human being[a] will be justified in his sight, since(E) through the law comes knowledge of sin.

The Righteousness of God Through Faith
21But now(F) the righteousness of God(G) has been manifested apart from the law, although(H) the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22the righteousness of God(I) through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.(J) For there is no distinction: 23for(K) all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24(L) and are justified(M) by his grace as a gift,(N) through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God(O) put forward as(P) a propitiation(Q) by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in(R) his divine forbearance he had passed over(S) former sins. 26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

27(T) Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that one is justified by faith(U) apart from works of the law. 29Or(V) is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30since(W) God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and(X) the uncircumcised through faith. 31Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
