The Epiphany of Our Lord

Collect (LSB)

O God, by the leading of a star You made known Your only-begotten Son to the Gentiles. Lead us, who know You by faith, to enjoy in heaven the fullness of Your divine presence; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament: Isaiah 49:1-7

The Servant of the LORD

 1Listen to me,(A) O coastlands,
   and give attention, you peoples(B) from afar.(C) The LORD called me from the womb,
   from the body of my mother he named my name. 2(D) He made my mouth like a sharp sword;
   (E) in the shadow of his hand he hid me;he made me a polished arrow;
   in his quiver he hid me away. 3And he said to me, "You are my servant,
   Israel,(F) in whom I will be glorified."[a] 4(G) But I said, "I have labored in vain;
   I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;yet surely my right is with the LORD,
   and my recompense with my God."

 5(H) And now the LORD says,
   he(I) who formed me from the womb to be his servant,to bring Jacob back to him;
   and that Israel might be gathered to him—for(J) I am honored in the eyes of the LORD,
   and my God has become my strength— 6he says:"It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
   to raise up the tribes of Jacob
   and to bring back the preserved of Israel;(K) I will make you(L) as a light for the nations,
   that(M) my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."

 7Thus says the LORD,
   (N) the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,(O) to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation,
   the servant of rulers:(P) "Kings shall see and arise;
   princes, and they shall prostrate themselves;because of the LORD, who is faithful,
   the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you."

The Future Glory of Israel

 1(A) Arise, shine, for your light has come,
   and(B) the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. 2For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
   and thick darkness the peoples;but the LORD will arise upon you,
   and his glory will be seen upon you. 3(C) And nations shall come to your light,
   and kings to the brightness of your rising.

 4(D) Lift up your eyes all around, and see;
   they all gather together, they come to you;(E) your sons shall come from afar,
   and your daughters shall be carried on the hip. 5Then you shall see and(F) be radiant;
   your heart shall thrill and exult,[a]because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you,
   (G) the wealth of the nations shall come to you. 6A multitude of camels shall cover you,
   the young camels of(H) Midian and(I) Ephah;
   all those from(J) Sheba shall come.(K) They shall bring gold and frankincense,
   and shall bring good news, the praises of the LORD.

Gospel: Matt. 2:1-12

The Visit of the Wise Men

 1Now(A) after Jesus was born in(B) Bethlehem of Judea(C) in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from(D) the east came to Jerusalem, 2saying, "Where is he who has been born(E) king of the Jews? For we saw(F) his star when it rose[b] and have come to(G) worship him." 3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where(H) the Christ was to be born. 5They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
 6(I) "'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
   are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;for from you shall come a ruler
   who will(J) shepherd my people Israel.'"

 7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." 9After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures,(K) they offered him gifts,(L) gold and(M) frankincense and(N) myrrh. 12And(O) being warned(P) in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Worship in the Splendor of Holiness

 1(A) Oh sing to the LORD(B) a new song;
   sing to the LORD, all the earth! 2Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
   (C) tell of his salvation from day to day. 3Declare his glory among the nations,
   his marvelous works among all the peoples! 4For(D) great is the LORD, and(E) greatly to be praised;
   he is to be feared above(F) all gods. 5For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
   but the LORD(G) made the heavens. 6Splendor and majesty are before him;
   (H) strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

 7Ascribe to the LORD, O(I) families of the peoples,
   (J) ascribe to the LORD glory and strength! 8Ascribe to the LORD(K) the glory due his name;
   bring(L) an offering, and(M) come into his courts! 9Worship the LORD in(N) the splendor of holiness;[a]
   (O) tremble before him, all the earth!

 10Say among the nations,(P) "The LORD reigns!
   Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
   he will(Q) judge the peoples with equity."

 11Let(R) the heavens be glad, and let(S) the earth rejoice;
   let(T) the sea roar, and all that fills it;
 12let(U) the field exult, and everything in it!Then shall all(V) the trees of the forest sing for joy
 13before the LORD, for he comes,
   for he comes(W) to judge the earth.He will judge the world in righteousness,
   and the peoples in his faithfulness.

The Humble and Contrite in Spirit

 1(A) Thus says the LORD:(B) "Heaven is my throne,
   and the earth is my footstool;what is the house that you would build for me,
   and what is the place of my rest? 2(C) All these things my hand has made,
   and so all these things came to be,
         declares the LORD.(D) But this is the one to whom I will look:
   he who is humble and contrite in spirit
   and trembles at my word.

 3(E) "He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man;
   he who sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog’s neck;he who presents a grain offering, like one who offers(F) pig’s blood;
   he who makes a memorial offering of frankincense, like one who blesses an idol.(G) These have chosen their own ways,
   and their soul delights in their abominations; 4(H) I also will choose harsh treatment for them
   and bring(I) their fears upon them,(J) because when I called, no one answered,
   when I spoke, they did not listen;(K) but they did what was evil in my eyes
   and chose that in which I did not delight."

 5Hear the word of the LORD,
   you who tremble at his word:"Your brothers who hate you
   and cast you out for my name’s sakehave said,(L) 'Let the LORD be glorified,
   that we may see your joy';
   but it is they who shall be put to shame.

 6"The sound of an uproar from the city!
   A sound from the temple!The sound of the LORD,
   (M) rendering recompense to his enemies!

Rejoice with Jerusalem

 7(N) "Before she was in labor
   she gave birth;before her pain came upon her
   she delivered a son. 8Who has heard such a thing?
   Who has seen such things?Shall a land be born in one day?
   Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment?For(O) as soon as Zion was in labor
   she brought forth her children. 9Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth?"
   says the LORD;"shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?"
   says your God.

 10(P) "Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
   all you who love her;rejoice with her in joy,
   all you who mourn over her; 11that you may nurse and be satisfied
   from her consoling breast;that you may drink deeply with delight
   from her glorious abundance."[a]

 12For thus says the LORD:(Q) "Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
   and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;and(R) you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
   and bounced upon her knees. 13As one whom his mother comforts,
   so(S) I will comfort you;
   you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. 14You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
   (T) your bones shall flourish like the grass;and(U) the hand of the LORD shall be known to his servants,
   and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.

Final Judgment and Glory of the LORD

 15"For behold,(V) the LORD will come in fire,
   and(W) his chariots like the whirlwind,to render his anger in fury,
   and his rebuke with flames of fire. 16For(X) by fire(Y) will the LORD enter into judgment,
   and by his sword, with all flesh;
   and those slain by the LORD shall be many.

 17(Z) "Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst,(AA) eating pig’s flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the LORD.

 18"For I know[b] their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming[c](AB) to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory, 19and I will set a sign among them. And from them(AC) I will send survivors to the nations, to(AD) Tarshish,(AE) Pul, and(AF) Lud, who draw the bow, to(AG) Tubal and(AH) Javan, to the coastlands far away, that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations. 20(AI) And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations(AJ) as an offering to the LORD, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD.

Give the King Your Justice

Of(A) Solomon.

 1Give the king your(B) justice, O God,
   and your righteousness to the royal son! 2May he(C) judge your people with righteousness,
   and your poor with justice! 3Let the mountains bear(D) prosperity for the people,
   and the hills, in righteousness! 4May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
   give deliverance to the children of the needy,
   and crush the oppressor!

 5May they fear you[a] while(E) the sun endures,
   and as long as the moon,(F) throughout all generations! 6May he be like(G) rain that falls on(H) the mown grass,
   like(I) showers that water the earth! 7In his days may(J) the righteous flourish,
   and(K) peace abound, till the moon be no more!

 8May he have dominion from(L) sea to sea,
   and from(M) the River[b] to the ends of the earth! 9May desert tribes(N) bow down before him,
   and his enemies(O) lick the dust! 10May the kings of(P) Tarshish and of(Q) the coastlands
   render him(R) tribute;may the kings of(S) Sheba and(T) Seba
   bring gifts! 11May all kings(U) fall down before him,
   all nations serve him!

 12For he delivers(V) the needy when he calls,
   the poor and him who has no helper. 13He has pity on the weak and the needy,
   and saves the lives of the needy. 14From oppression and violence he redeems their life,
   and(W) precious is their blood in his sight.

 15Long may he live;
   may(X) gold of Sheba be given to him!May prayer be made(Y) for him continually,
   and blessings invoked for him all the day! 16May there be abundance of grain in the land;
   on the tops of the mountains may it wave;
   may its fruit be like Lebanon;and may people(Z) blossom in the cities
   like the(AA) grass of the field! 17(AB) May his name endure forever,
   his fame continue as long as the sun!(AC) May people be blessed in him,
   (AD) all nations call him blessed!

 18(AE) Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,
   who alone does(AF) wondrous things. 19Blessed be his(AG) glorious name forever;
   may(AH) the whole earth be filled with his glory!
         (AI) Amen and Amen!
