Christmastide XII

First Reading: Is. 65:8-25

 8Thus says the LORD,
         "As the new wine is found in the cluster,
         And one says, 'Do not destroy it, for there is benefit in it,'
         So I will act on behalf of My servants
         In order (A)not to destroy all of them.
    9"I will bring forth (B)offspring from Jacob,
         And an (C)heir of My mountains from Judah;
         Even (D)My chosen ones shall inherit it,
         And (E)My servants will dwell there.
    10"(F)Sharon will be a pasture land for flocks,
         And the (G)valley of Achor a resting place for herds,
         For My people who (H)seek Me.
    11"But you who (I)forsake the LORD,
         Who forget My (J)holy mountain,
         Who set a table for Fortune,
         And who fill cups with mixed wine for Destiny,
    12I will destine you for the (K)sword,
         And all of you will bow down to the (L)slaughter
         Because I called, but you (M)did not answer;
         I spoke, but you did not hear.
         And you did evil in My sight
         And chose that in which I did not delight."

 13Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD,
         "Behold, My servants will (N)eat, but you will be (O)hungry
         Behold, My servants will (P)drink, but you will be (Q)thirsty
         Behold, My servants will (R)rejoice, but you will be (S)put to shame.
    14"Behold, My servants will (T)shout joyfully with a glad heart,
         But you will (U)cry out with a heavy heart,
         And you will wail with a broken spirit.
    15"You will leave your name for a (V)curse to My chosen ones,
         And the Lord GOD will slay you
         But My servants will be called by (W)another name.
    16"Because he who is blessed in the earth
         Will be blessed by the (X)God of truth;
         And he who swears in the earth
         Will (Y)swear by the God of truth;
         Because the former troubles are forgotten,
         And because they are hidden from My sight!

New Heavens and a New Earth
    17"For behold, I create (Z)new heavens and a new earth;
         And the (AA)former things will not be remembered or come to mind.
    18"But be (AB)glad and rejoice forever in what I create;
         For behold, I create Jerusalem for rejoicing
         And her people for gladness.
    19"I will also (AC)rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in My people;
         And there will no longer be heard in her
         The voice of (AD)weeping and the sound of crying.
    20"No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days,
         Or an old man who does (AE)not live out his days;
         For the youth will die at the age of one hundred
         And the (AF)one who does not reach the age of one hundred
         Will be thought accursed.
    21"They will (AG)build houses and inhabit them;
         They will also (AH)plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
    22"They will not build and (AI)another inhabit,
         They will not plant and another eat;
         For (AJ)as the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people,
         And My chosen ones will (AK)wear out the work of their hands.
    23"They will (AL)not labor in vain,
         Or bear children for calamity;
         For they are the (AM)offspring of those blessed by the LORD,
         And their descendants with them.

 24"It will also come to pass that before they call, I will (AN)answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.

 25"The (AO)wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the (AP)lion will eat straw like the ox; and (AQ)dust will be the serpent's food They will (AR)do no evil or harm in all My (AS)holy mountain," says the LORD.

Second Reading: Luke 3:1-20

John the Baptist Preaches

 1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when (A)Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and (B)Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,

 2in the high priesthood of (C)Annas and (D)Caiaphas, (E)the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

 3And he came into all (F)the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;

 4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
         "(G)THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,
         'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,
         MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.
    5'(H)EVERY RAVINE WILL BE FILLED,
         AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE BROUGHT LOW;
         THE CROOKED WILL BECOME STRAIGHT,
         AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH;
    6(I)AND ALL FLESH WILL (J)SEE THE SALVATION OF GOD.'"

 7So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, "(K)You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

 8"Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and (L)do not begin to say to yourselves, '(M)We have Abraham for our father,' for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.

 9"Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so (N)every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

 10And the crowds were questioning him, saying, "(O)Then what shall we do?"

 11And he would answer and say to them, "The man who has two tunics is to (P)share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise."

 12And some (Q)tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?"

 13And he said to them, "Collect no more than what you have been ordered to."

 14Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, "And what about us, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not take money from anyone by force, or (R)accuse anyone falsely, and (S)be content with your wages."

 15Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, (T)as to whether he was the Christ,

 16(U)John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

 17"His (V)winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with (W)unquenchable fire."

 18So with many other exhortations he preached the gospel to the people.

 19But when (X)Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him because of (Y)Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the wicked things which (Z)Herod had done,

 20Herod also added this to them all: (AA)he locked John up in prison.
