Holy Innocents, Martyrs

Collect (LSB)

Almighty God, the martyred innocents of Bethlehem showed forth Your praise not by speaking but by dying. Put to death in us all that is in conflict with Your will that our lives may bear witness to the faith we profess with our lips; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament: Jer. 31:15-17

    15Thus says the LORD,
         "(A)A voice is heard in (B)Ramah,
         Lamentation and bitter weeping
         Rachel is weeping for her children;
         She (C)refuses to be comforted for her children,
         Because (D)they are no more."

 16Thus says the LORD,
         "(E)Restrain your voice from weeping
         And your eyes from tears;
         For your (F)work will be rewarded," declares the LORD,
         "And they will (G)return from the land of the enemy.
    17"There is (H)hope for your future," declares the LORD,
         "And your children will return to their own territory.

Epistle: Rev. 14:1-5

The Lamb and the 144,000 on Mount Zion

 1Then I looked, and behold, (A)the Lamb was standing on (B)Mount Zion, and with Him (C)one hundred and forty-four thousand, having (D)His name and the (E)name of His Father written (F)on their foreheads.

 2And I heard a voice from heaven, like (G)the sound of many waters and like the (H)sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of (I)harpists playing on their harps.

 3And they sang (J)a new song before the throne and before the (K)four living creatures and the (L)elders; and (M)no one could learn the song except the (N)one hundred and forty-four thousand who had been (O)purchased from the earth.

 4(P)These are the ones who have not been defiled with women, for they [a]have kept themselves chaste These are the ones who (Q)follow the Lamb wherever He goes These have been (R)purchased from among men (S)as first fruits to God and to the Lamb.

 5And (T)no lie was found in their mouth; they are (U)blameless.

Gospel: Matt. 2:13-18

The Flight to Egypt

 13Now when they had gone, behold, an (A)angel of the Lord (B)appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him."

 14So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.

 15He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "(C)OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED (D)MY SON."

Herod Slaughters Babies

 16Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by (E)the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and (F)slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.

 17Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:
    18"(G)A VOICE WAS HEARD IN RAMAH,
         WEEPING AND GREAT MOURNING,
         RACHEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN;
         AND SHE REFUSED TO BE COMFORTED,
         BECAUSE THEY WERE NO MORE."

The Exalted Servant

    13Behold, My (A)servant will prosper,
         He will be high and lifted up and greatly (B)exalted.
    14Just as many were astonished at you, My people,
         So His (C)appearance was marred more than any man
         And His form more than the sons of men.
    15Thus He will (D)sprinkle many nations,
         Kings will (E)shut their mouths on account of Him;
         For (F)what had not been told them they will see,
         And what they had not heard they will understand.

The Suffering Servant

    1(G)Who has believed our message?
         And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
    2For He grew up before Him like a (H)tender shoot,
         And like a root out of parched ground;
         He has (I)no stately form or majesty
         That we should look upon Him,
         Nor appearance that we should [a]be attracted to Him.
    3He was (J)despised and forsaken of men,
         A man of sorrows and (K)acquainted with grief;
         And like one from whom men hide their face
         He was (L)despised, and we did not (M)esteem Him.
    4Surely our [b]griefs He Himself (N)bore,
         And our sorrows He carried;
         Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
         Smitten of (O)God, and afflicted.
    5But He was [c]pierced through for (P)our transgressions,
         He was crushed for (Q)our iniquities;
         The (R)chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
         And by (S)His scourging we are healed.
    6All of us like sheep have gone astray,
         Each of us has turned to his own way;
         But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all
         To fall on Him.
    7He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
         Yet He did not (T)open His mouth;
         (U)Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
         And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
         So He did not open His mouth.
    8By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
         And as for His generation, who considered
         That He was cut off out of the land of the living
         (V)For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
    9His grave was assigned with wicked men,
         Yet He was with a (W)rich man in His death,
         (X)Because He had (Y)done no violence,
         Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
    10But the LORD was pleased
         To (Z)crush Him, (AA)putting Him to grief;
         If He would render Himself as a guilt (AB)offering,
         He will see (AC)His offspring,
         He will prolong His days,
         And the good (AD)pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
    11As a result of the anguish of His soul,
         He will (AE)see it and be satisfied;
         By His (AF)knowledge the Righteous One,
         My Servant, will justify the many,
         As He will (AG)bear their iniquities.
    12Therefore, I will allot Him a (AH)portion with the great,
         And He will divide the booty with the strong;
         Because He poured out (AI)Himself to death,
         And was (AJ)numbered with the transgressors;
         Yet He Himself (AK)bore the sin of many,
         And interceded for the transgressors.

The Fertility of Zion

    1"(AL)Shout for joy, O barren one, you who have borne no child;
         Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have not travailed;
         For the sons of the (AM)desolate one will be (AN)more numerous
         Than the sons of the married woman," says the LORD.
    2"(AO)Enlarge the place of your tent;
         Stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, spare not;
         Lengthen your (AP)cords
         And strengthen your (AQ)pegs.
    3"For you will (AR)spread abroad to the right and to the left
         And your descendants will (AS)possess nations
         And will (AT)resettle the desolate cities.
    4"Fear not, for you will (AU)not be put to shame;
         And do not feel humiliated, for you will not be disgraced;
         But you will forget the (AV)shame of your youth,
         And the (AW)reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.
    5"For your (AX)husband is your Maker,
         Whose name is the LORD of hosts;
         And your (AY)Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel,
         Who is called the (AZ)God of all the earth.
    6"For the LORD has called you,
         Like a wife (BA)forsaken and grieved in spirit,
         Even like a wife of one's youth when she is rejected,"
         Says your God.
    7"For a (BB)brief moment I forsook you,
         But with great compassion I will (BC)gather you.
    8"In an (BD)outburst of anger
         I hid My face from you for a moment,
         But with everlasting (BE)lovingkindness I will (BF)have compassion on you,"
         Says the LORD your (BG)Redeemer.
    9"For this is like the days of Noah to Me,
         When I swore that the waters of Noah
         Would (BH)not flood the earth again;
         So I have sworn that I will (BI)not be angry with you
         Nor will I rebuke you.
    10"For the (BJ)mountains may be removed and the hills may shake,
         But My lovingkindness will not be removed from you,
         And My (BK)covenant of peace will not be shaken,"
         Says (BL)the LORD who has compassion on you.

 19But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord (H)appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said,

 20"Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child's life are dead."

 21So Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.

 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being (I)warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee,

 23and came and lived in a city called (J)Nazareth This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: "He shall be called a (K)Nazarene."
