St. John, Apostle and Evangelist

Collect (LSB)

Merciful Lord, cast the bright beams of Your light upon Your Church that we, being instructed in the doctrine of Your blessed apostle and evangelist John, may come to the light of everlasting life; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament (LSB): Rev. 1:1-6

The Revelation of Jesus Christ

 1The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which (A)God gave Him to (B)show to His bond-servants, (C)the things which must soon take place; and He sent and communicated it (D)by His angel to His bond-servant (E)John,

 2who testified to (F)the word of God and to (G)the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.

 3(H)Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; (I)for the time is near.

Message to the Seven Churches

 4(J)John to (K)the seven churches that are in (L)Asia: (M)Grace to you and peace, from (N)Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from (O)the seven Spirits who are before His throne,

 5and from Jesus Christ, (P)the faithful witness, the (Q)firstborn of the dead, and the (R)ruler of the kings of the earth To Him who (S)loves us and released us from our sins by His blood--

 6and He has made us to be a (T)kingdom, (U)priests to (V)His God and Father--(W)to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Old Testament: Hosea 14:1-9

Israel's Future Blessing

    1(A)Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God,
         For you have stumbled because of your (B)iniquity.
    2Take words with you and return to the LORD.
         Say to Him, "(C)Take away all iniquity
         And receive us graciously,
         That we may (D)present the fruit of our lips.
    3"Assyria will not save us,
         We will (E)not ride on horses;
         Nor will we say again, '(F)Our god,'
         To the (G)work of our hands;
         For in (H)You the orphan finds mercy."
    4I will (I)heal their apostasy,
         I will (J)love them freely,
         For My anger has (K)turned away from them.
    5I will be like the (L)dew to Israel;
         He will blossom like the (M)lily,
         And he will take root like the cedars of (N)Lebanon.
    6His shoots will sprout,
         And his beauty will be like the (O)olive tree
         And his fragrance like the cedars of (P)Lebanon.
    7Those who (Q)live in his shadow
         Will again raise (R)grain,
         And they will blossom like the vine.
         His renown will be like the wine of Lebanon.
    8O Ephraim, what more have I to do with (S)idols?
         It is I who answer and look after you
         I am like a luxuriant (T)cypress;
         From (U)Me comes your fruit.
    9(V)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
         Whoever is discerning, let him know them
         For the (W)ways of the LORD are right,
         And the (X)righteous will walk in them,
         But (Y)transgressors will stumble in them.

Epistle: 1 John 1:1-10

Introduction, The Incarnate Word

 1What was (A)from the beginning, what we have (B)heard, what we have (C)seen with our eyes, what we (D)have looked at and (E)touched with our hands, concerning the (F)Word of Life--

 2and (G)the life was manifested, and we have (H)seen and (I)testify and proclaim to you (J)the eternal life, which was (K)with the Father and was (L)manifested to us--

 3what we have (M)seen and (N)heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our (O)fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.

 4(P)These things we write, so that our (Q)joy may be made complete.

God Is Light

 5(R)This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that (S)God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

 6(T)If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we (U)lie and (V)do not practice the truth;

 7but if we (W)walk in the Light as (X)He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and (Y)the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

 8(Z)If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the (AA)truth is not in us.

 9(AB)If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and (AC)to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

 10(AD)If we say that we have not sinned, we (AE)make Him a liar and (AF)His word is not in us.

Gospel: John 21:19-24

 19Now this He said, (A)signifying by (B)what kind of death he would glorify God And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "(C)Follow Me!"

 20Peter, turning around, saw the (D)disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had (E)leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, "Lord, who is the one who betrays You?"

 21So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, "Lord, and what about this man?"

 22Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain (F)until I come, what is that to you? You (G)follow Me!"

 23Therefore this saying went out among (H)the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, "If I want him to remain (I)until I come, what is that to you?"

 24This is the disciple who (J)is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

First Reading: Is. 51:17-52:12

    17(A)Rouse yourself! Rouse yourself! Arise, O Jerusalem,
         You who have (B)drunk from the LORD'S hand the cup of His anger;
         The chalice of reeling you have drained to the dregs.
    18There is (C)none to guide her among all the sons she has borne,
         Nor is there one to take her by the hand among all the sons she has reared.
    19These two things have befallen you;
         Who will mourn for you?
         The (D)devastation and destruction, famine and sword;
         How shall I comfort you?
    20Your sons have fainted,
         They (E)lie helpless at the head of every street,
         Like an (F)antelope in a net,
         Full of the wrath of the LORD,
         The (G)rebuke of your God.
    21Therefore, please hear this, you (H)afflicted,
         Who are (I)drunk, but not with wine:
    22Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God
         Who (J)contends for His people,
         "Behold, I have taken out of your hand the (K)cup of reeling,
         The chalice of My anger;
         You will never drink it again.
    23"I will (L)put it into the hand of your tormentors,
         Who have said to you, '(M)Lie down that we may walk over you.'
         You have even made your back like the ground
         And like the street for those who walk over it."

Cheer for Prostrate Zion
    1(N)Awake, awake,
         Clothe yourself in your strength, O Zion;
         Clothe yourself in your (O)beautiful garments,
         O Jerusalem, the (P)holy city;
         For the uncircumcised and the (Q)unclean
         Will no longer come into you.
    2Shake yourself (R)from the dust, (S)rise up,
         O captive Jerusalem;
         (T)Loose yourself from the chains around your neck,
         O captive daughter of Zion.

 3For thus says the LORD, "You were (U)sold for nothing and you will be (V)redeemed (W)without money."

 4For thus says the Lord GOD, "My people (X)went down at the first into Egypt to reside there; then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

 5"Now therefore, what do I have here," declares the LORD, "seeing that My people have been taken away without cause?" Again the LORD declares, "Those who rule over them howl, and My (Y)name is continually blasphemed all day long.

 6"Therefore My people shall (Z)know My name; therefore in that day I am the one who is speaking, 'Here I am.'"
    7How lovely on the mountains
         Are the feet of him who brings (AA)good news,
         Who announces peace
         And brings good news of happiness,
         Who announces salvation,
         And says to Zion, "Your (AB)God reigns!"
    8Listen! Your watchmen lift up their (AC)voices,
         They shout joyfully together;
         For they will see with their own eyes
         When the LORD restores Zion.
    9(AD)Break forth, shout joyfully together,
         You (AE)waste places of Jerusalem;
         For the LORD has comforted His people,
         He has (AF)redeemed Jerusalem.
    10The LORD has bared His holy (AG)arm
         In the sight of all the nations,
         That (AH)all the ends of the earth may see
         The salvation of our God.
    11(AI)Depart, depart, go out from there,
         (AJ)Touch nothing unclean;
         Go out of the midst of her, (AK)purify yourselves,
         You who carry the vessels of the LORD.
    12But you will not go out in (AL)haste,
         Nor will you go as fugitives;
         For the (AM)LORD will go before you,
         And (AN)the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

Second Reading: Matt. 2:1-12

The Visit of the Magi

 1Now after Jesus was (A)born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of (B)Herod the king, [a]magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,

 2"Where is He who has been born (C)King of the Jews? For we saw (D)His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

 3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

 4Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born.

 5They said to him, "(E)In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet:
    6'(F)AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH,
         ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH;
         FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER
         WHO WILL (G)SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.'"

 7Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time (H)the star appeared.

 8And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him."

 9After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was.

 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

 11After coming into the house they saw the Child with (I)Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and (J)worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

 12And having been (K)warned by God (L)in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.
