The Nativity of Our Lord (Christmas Dawn)

Collect (LSB)

Most merciful God, You gave Your eternal Word to become incarnate of the pure Virgin. Grant Your people grace to put away fleshly lusts, that they may be ready for Your visitation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament (LSB): Exodus 40:17-21; Exodus 40:34-38

Old Testament: Micah 3:2-4

    2"You who hate good and love evil,
         Who (A)tear off their skin from them
         And their flesh from their bones,
    3Who (B)eat the flesh of my people,
         Strip off their skin from them,
         Break their bones
         And (C)chop them up as for the pot
         And as meat in a kettle."
    4Then they will (D)cry out to the LORD,
         But He will not answer them
         Instead, He will (E)hide His face from them at that time
         Because they have (F)practiced evil deeds.

Epistle: Titus 3:4-7

 4But when the (A)kindness of (B)God our Savior and His love for mankind (C)appeared,

 5(D)He saved us, (E)not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but (F)according to His mercy, by the (G)washing of regeneration and (H)renewing by the Holy Spirit,

 6(I)whom He poured out upon us (J)richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,

 7so that being justified by His grace we would be made (K)heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Gospel: Luke 2:15-20

 15When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, "Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us."

 16So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.

 17When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child.

 18And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.

 19But Mary (A)treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.

 20The shepherds went back, (B)glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

First Reading: Is. 49:1-18

Salvation Reaches to the End of the Earth
    1Listen to Me, O (A)islands,
         And pay attention, you peoples from afar
         (B)The LORD called Me from the womb;
         From the body of My mother He named Me.
    2He has made My (C)mouth like a sharp sword,
         In the (D)shadow of His hand He has concealed Me;
         And He has also made Me a select (E)arrow,
         He has hidden Me in His quiver.
    3He said to Me, "(F)You are My Servant, Israel,
         (G)In Whom I will show My glory."
    4But I said, "I have (H)toiled in vain,
         I have spent My strength for nothing and vanity;
         Yet surely the justice due to Me is with the LORD,
         And My (I)reward with My God."
    5And now says (J)the LORD, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
         To bring Jacob back to Him, so that (K)Israel might be gathered to Him
         (For I am (L)honored in the sight of the LORD,
         And My God is My (M)strength),
    6He says, "It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
         To raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the (N)preserved ones of Israel;
         I will also make You a (O)light of the nations
         So that My salvation may reach to the (P)end of the earth."
    7Thus says the LORD, the (Q)Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One,
         To the (R)despised One,
         To the One abhorred by the nation,
         To the Servant of rulers,
         "(S)Kings will see and arise,
         Princes will also (T)bow down,
         Because of the LORD who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You."
    8Thus says the LORD,
         "In a (U)favorable time I have answered You,
         And in a day of salvation I have helped You;
         And I will (V)keep You and (W)give You for a covenant of the people,
         To (X)restore the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages;
    9Saying to those who are (Y)bound, 'Go forth,'
         To those who are in darkness, 'Show yourselves '
         Along the roads they will feed,
         And their pasture will be on all (Z)bare heights.
    10"They will (AA)not hunger or thirst,
         Nor will the scorching (AB)heat or sun strike them down;
         For (AC)He who has compassion on them will (AD)lead them
         And will guide them to (AE)springs of water.
    11"I will make all (AF)My mountains a road,
         And My (AG)highways will be raised up.
    12"Behold, these will come (AH)from afar;
         And lo, these will come from the (AI)north and from the west,
         And these from the land of Sinim."
    13(AJ)Shout for joy, O heavens! And rejoice, O earth!
         Break forth into joyful shouting, O mountains!
         For the (AK)LORD has comforted His people
         And will (AL)have compassion on His afflicted.
Promise to Zion
    14But Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me,
         And the Lord has forgotten me."
    15"Can a woman forget her nursing child
         And have no compassion on the son of her womb?
         Even these may forget, but (AM)I will not forget you.
    16"Behold, I have (AN)inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
         Your (AO)walls are continually before Me.
    17"Your builders hurry;
         Your (AP)destroyers and devastators
         Will depart from you.
    18"(AQ)Lift up your eyes and look around;
         (AR)All of them gather together, (AS)they come to you
         (AT)As I live," declares the LORD,
         "You will surely (AU)put on all of them as jewels and bind them on as a bride.

The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah

 1The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, (A)the son of David, (B)the son of Abraham:

 2Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of [a]Judah and his brothers.

 3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, (C)Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.

 4Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon.

 5Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse.

 6Jesse was the father of David the king. David (D)was the father of Solomon by [b]Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah.

 7Solomon (E)was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa.

 8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah.

 9Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.

 10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the (F)father of Josiah.

 11Josiah became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the (G)deportation to Babylon.

 12After the (H)deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel.

 13Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor.

 14Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud.

 15Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob.

 16Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, (I)who is called the Messiah.

 17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the (J)deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the (K)deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
